So, I've been thinking: we did this pretty cool thing a couple years back that I thought was a pretty good idea, and I was proud to be part of it. In the coming weeks, if you're an American of voting age, you'll be heading to the polls and coming back with the sticker proof that you did your part as an Americunt Amerikkkan American.

Remember: there is no wrong answer...but you WILL be mocked and ostracized if you don't cop to voting for Obama. At best, if you're lucky.

I'll try to talk to Suit sometime and see if we can't do another kind of contest like we did last time.

In the meantime, submit pictures of proof that you voted. Just the sticker is alright.

Too bad it's not a direct election, or I would give a shit about voting.

I'm Canadian. Can I forge the sticker?

Although I will be voting in municipal elections in a week or so.

Guess it sucks to be a non-American. Voted in both Provincial and Federal elections here in Quebec, fat lot of good it did, at both levels the worst possible candidates got elected.

I'll vote for Obama in spirit.

Alright, that's all good and fine when you consider Romney vs Obama (though, I would still feel a bit skeptical in voting since I don't keep up with politics and wouldn't know what I was voting for beyond social issues and the bias, uninformed regurgitation of everything else I hear from the people around me). But how does this apply to two candidates who are equally awful? What objective benefit is there to voting?

People always act like not voting is comparable to treason, but if anything, I'm doing the country a favor. I'm not voting because I don't know shit about the issues. That guy successfully managed to refresh my desire for suicide after about every other word. He is like a more annoying Sxephil. Though, it did have some decent information. I vaguely remember hearing the representation explanation, except when I first heard it, it was from a potential psychopath. Interesting nonetheless.

However, my biggest problem is still this: I do not know shit about politics. I have no interest in politics; my desire to do other things is greater than my desire to learn more about politics; and therefore, I should not be voting.

Society has made it out to be a stigma of being lazy and un-American for not voting. Although the intentions are good (our civic duty, supporting the democratic process, out of pride for your country) it pressures the uninformed to vote. These same people ridicule those who are actually informed, keep up with politics and choose not to vote. What does that say about our system when it becomes more about quantity and less about the quality? It's acceptable to vote for a candidate based simply on race or religion, which many surely do. You will have people who will check the box for Mitt Romney solely because he is Mormon, or for Obama solely because he is Muslim or African-American, which is fine. But say you have a person who is extremely adept and well up-to-date with each of the candidate's platforms. If they deemed neither to be suitable candidates and decide not to vote, all of sudden they are labeled as anarchists, lazy or apathetic people.

Another problem, as seen from above posts, is the philosophy that you have to choose between TWO candidates when in reality there are several candidates on the ticket from different parties. The same people who ridiculeencourage you to vote make it out to being a waste to consider a 3rd party candidate. The media powerhouses, PACs and lobbyists certainly have their hand in influencing our political views. It's just funny and kinda sad that all the slandering propaganda actually discourages the desire to vote and disengages people from the whole electoral process.



On that note, I am voting. Taking my flask of Everclear with me to the local precinct. Need something to smile about while I'm there.

Tae, wanting me to vote for Obama is understandable. Because you belief Obama is better than or less bad than Romney. However, my problem is more along the lines of the actual act of voting. I'm trying to figure out why uninformed voting is so much more important than not voting. I've been hearing this for years, and I'm not just going to cave and let it drop if other people aren't. People should be able to give me a good, solid reason why I, as an uninformed American should be voting. And like I said, I don't mean in this specific race, but in general.

Purin, thank you. That is pretty much the issue I'm having here. I'm not going to head down to the polls to cast a vote for a a candidate I really don't know anything about. That seems like the greater sin.

Obama is still a huge dick, he's just not a complete moron and actually has made (and has been blocked trying to make) major contributions to help the middle class, poor, and minorities get an upper hand on the elites.

But he also still has Guantanamo bay open, has pretty much instated more executive orders than all the other presidents combined (although Bush comes pretty close), and is in general indirectly killing the fuck out of people overseas.

I don't know, it's obviously more nuanced and complicated but I don't care enough to go more into it. American politics piss me off because all it really comes down to is America is ruled by elites, and for elites.

Yes turnouts in almost every major first world country are around 50-70 percent. Get me about the 5 percent of Meowth's, and that's a good chunk of voters. Maybe you don't change the 2 party system anytime soon. But would you get concessions from both parties and consideration during their terms? I think you would.

And sorry but America's voting system is fucked up, you'll have to deal with it. They favour two parties and any other party is a wasted vote. The belief that not voting at all is better than casting a random vote has my support, but that doesn't mean it's the right thing to do. Politics do affect our life and the life of the rest of our country, and it is a civil duty to be informed and cast a responsible vote. If you want to live and work in your country it is your duty to be at least a little informed about politics, and you don't need to sweat it to be able to cast a vote.
Apart from that, I think that by not voting you are basically giving up your right to complain, but I also think that no one should force you to vote if you don't want to.
