Music Great and New

Heya.

I thought it'd be a cool idea to share some bands & music that are new and not very famous. Hopefully we'll be able to find new artists that we like and help beginning bands spread the word.
To keep the the topic in order and on target, how about we avoid posting direct youtube links (or at least use spoilers)? I'd like to focus on beginning bands and lesser known stuff. I especially like bands that sell their music online in "as much as you'd like to pay" deals.

Here's the two bands that inspired me to make this topic, both local bands here from Wellington, that I saw perform live:

The New Brides are hard to describe. Their web page says

Quote

"Indie meets Mariachi? Pop meets Alternative? They may be indescribable but you still find yourself whistling their tunes."

In their facebook page you can stream their music for free or download the album for as much as you think it's worth (minimum US$4)
(They need 1000 facebook likes so the radios will take their songs, so you know...)
Live I've heard them playing a lot more songs, but they haven't recorded everything in high quality enough to spread.

Johnsonville City Nights have a very different sound. Definitely country, but with a strange urban theme, they feel a bit paradoxal.
In their bandcamp page you can stream the songs for free or buy their CD for as much as you think it's worth (minimum US$0.00). I especially like the song called Temporary Reprieve

Cheers

Pretty bad ass stoner/psychedelic rock

Aver

Heard about them from some artist none of you would know.

I'm not keen in new music bands, but I happen to know one from my country because the leader is in the same wow guild as me ^_^;. Here's their myspace but most of the songs are in Italian.

Stazione Centrale is very poppy... They have a nice melody to them, but it sounds a bit like many other pop songs.
Aver seems quite nice. A bit too heavy for my palate, though. (Really, I was already expecting it to be, considering who posted it :P )
  • #4

I really don't know many really obscure bands, but Mother Mother is one my favourites. And one of the saving graces of the Canadian music industry.
  • #5

Does anyone here like weird multi-genre post rock? I found this dude called Igorrr a while back, and he blends elements of trip-hop, heavy metal, breakcore, classical, folk, baroque/opera, and random other stuff. I don't even know, just listen to this shit.

This song takes a little bit to get going, but at the 58 second mark it changes drastically and then gets progressively weirder.

  • #7

I'm into most genres but Classic Rock is really the only one i'll listen to repeatedly. I like myself some blues too, whatever sounds good to me.

Here have a couple of obscure tunes/bands I listen too.

It's kind of the opposite, the band was created for the show. They're a virtual band just like Gorillaz or Josie and the Pussy Cats.

And it's Dethklok yo

It's amazing how much less of an idiot you sound after I fixed your post.

I'm just gonna throw this out there: No radio station bases their choice of music on number of likes on a facebook page. Ever.

So, uh, I don't really think this is about obscure bands. I'm pretty sure it is about new bands that are just starting out.

I mean, even if it is about obscure bands, you guys are already doing badly. Dethklok? Crosby, Stills & Nash?

Seriously?
  • #12

Haha yeah you can go ahead and delete that post, I admit I was being pretty dumb haha.
  • #13

Nah dude don't be ashamed or anything, we're just ribbing. Van Morrison and Crosby Stills and Nash aren't really obscure in terms of music as a whole, but you shouldn't feel bad about posting them. It's just not that big a deal d0g.

Yeah, I found it strange, too. I actually know the guys in this band personally, though. They've been going to radio stations and bigger concert places, and that's the answer they've been getting. Get famous first, then they consider your stuff. otherwise they don't bother.

Igorrr is pretty weird, BaconMan, I'm listening to them now. The song just keeps changing so much...
I'll listen to Mother Mother afterwards. Just listened to them now. No real opinion formed, though. I feel like I've come across them before. I'll have to listen to it a few more times before I can make a call.

An artist I got quite into a while back was David Grellier, under the pseudonym "College". He's not really unknown but I think deserves special mention. His song "A Real Hero", featuring Electric Youth, was the main theme for the movie "Drive", which brought him into mainstream charts. His stuff is pretty much electronica, but not the "tum tsh tum tsh" rave thrash at all.

This is his soundcloud page, but I have no idea of how legal it is.

Oh Mindil Beach Markets are a cool band who are from my hometown. They describe themselves as: Explosive, dynamic, and original, Mindil Beach Markets has discovered a blistering fusion of Rock, Reggae, Hip Hop, Folk, Funk, and Blues that is entirely their own.

i don't think they're exactly "new", but i've been listening to a lot of Alvin Band lately

  • #20

Another not really "New" one and I honestly don't know how popular they are, but The Protomen are pretty ballin. And yeah it's basically what it sounds like, a Megaman-inspired rock opera but hey if you have a hankering for 80's sounding rock music they got you covered.

I just got back from a concert by them though and it was AWESOME, so I could be currently biased.
  • #21

There's a music scene starting to bubble up as of late in my town. It's pretty cool to see, but so far I haven't really noticed anything that's piqued my interest yet.
Though if we're talking about local music in general...

Same high school as Ian Curtis 8-)
  • #22

You know, these threads would stop sucking so hard if people actually checked out and discussed what other people have posted instead of worrying about what band they should post.
  • #23

that's a really cool band, CaptainBaconMan.

and Commie, everyone in this forum knows Protomen already.

The New Brides just released their song "Record" on the International Independent Charts. It'd be great if they could make the front page. So if ya dug the sound before, play it in link everyday so they get as many hits as possible ;)

This reminds me of the later years of the B-52s, like Rock Lobster and what not. It's a dirty kind of sound that a lot of people like. I am unfortunatelly not counted in between these people, though.

Just so you have some perspective, Joy Division, after their 'punk' origins, are considered a pioneering Post-Punk band. So you're right when you say they're kind of like the later B-52s. I agree with you on the sound thing, while I appreciate Joy Division for what they did, I'm not a fan of Ian Curtis's voice. Joy Divisions helped set the stage for modern bands like, The Strokes, Brand New, Manchester Orchestra, Franz Ferdinand, and Modest Mouse.

Their best song is probably 'Love Will tear Us Apart' though.

Even U2, and Fall Out Boy have done covers of this band.

I've been transfixed with Passenger lately, especially this song but I'm quite aware he's a little more mellow than what seems to be the general taste here. Plus he's not super unknown, touring with Ed Sheeran and all

Oh yeah. This song is alright. I remember hearing it on the radio a lot, a while back.

No need to stick to any genres or styles, BrusselSprouts! I'll listen to it as soon as the band finish their practice outside.

Just an update they released second B-side of the album.

Quote

We've just released the 2nd B-side from our upcoming album. I know we said we'd release it on the 15th, but come on, we're on island time here. The song is called Daylight. It's pretty chill and features our good friends George Grunenberg (upright bass) and Bryn Badel (horns). For those of you who aren't familiar with 'B-sides', neither Amanda nor Daylight will be on our new album. Click the cover below to listen to Daylight.

uhhh i hope this post counts...!! time to post stuff none of you will like at all

i can't say crash coordinates is new since they released an album on 2008, but they released a few singles last month that have gone unnoticed.
here's their website, and you can listen to one of the songs right there! i believe it's only a dollar to buy a single (and $0.49 somewhere else i think??)

some stuff from the cinema. they're indie/pop. picasso and the wolf are my personal favorites.

and here's icarus the owl. i admit sometimes the instruments can sound choppy and it can be weirdly strung together sometimes, but i think it's still enjoyable!! they're alternative rock.

might edit this post with what i think of other songs posted here.

I found a cool band through spotify recently. Foster the People have and indie / pop sound and were randomly playing on the radio. Upvoted them and now they're playing all the time. Some of their songs can be heard for free on their website.

I love the little keyboard playing on a lot of their songs and the random percussion sounds.

@Kiradood: Wow man that sucked pretty bad. Even within its genre its one of the worst examples I've heard. Unless it's meant to be a parody, in which case... uh, I didn't really get the joke?

@Toffee: I didn't like Crash Coordinates much. They are too pop and generic. The Cinema and Icarus and the Owl are pretty good, though. Icarus and the Owl has some cool little electronic sounds on the back I'm enjoying, but that I can't tell the instrument for. They're pretty easy listening, though. Added them to my randoms playlist.

My taste in music probably isn't exactly stellar (ie I actually liked Kira's song) but I'll nonetheless attest to Heartist being an impressive group despite it having been in existence for only a month or so. They're relatively comparable to an amalgamation of modern trending music and retroesque dark metal, but blended in a way that isn't weird or contradictory.

(Notably high levels of angst ahead; you've been forewarned)

This guy isn't new or anything, but he's virtually unknown. It's kind of shouty bosnian mathrock, I'm not sure if he plays all the parts or not but I'm pretty sure he layers his own vocals to make it sound like there's a band. Oh, and the whole album is free on his bandcamp.

I'm doing some research on the bands playing at the St Kilda Festival this weekend. Here's a bunch of bands for you guys to look into. After I've seen them live I'll report back.

Cheers,

Buckley Ward - available on spotify - soft, indie. Generic
Elysium Fields - Bandcamp - indie rock. Generic
While The City Sleeps - pop, mainstream, reminds me of blink182
The Refunds - Myspace - Blues / rock, keyboard, a different sound.
Madre Monte - Official Website - Cuban music with trumpet and the likes, spanglish
Shaun Kirk - Official Website - urban country rock. could be good could be bad.
StereoKing - Triple J Unearthed - Little kids playing punk, very cute.
Animaux - Soundcloud - Sounds a bit like jazz. Listening to these kids play and sing you wouldn't say they're so young. A really nice, vibrant sound. The singer suffers a bit on the live performances, but the studio stuff is beautiful.
The Vitriols - Bandcamp - rock, progressive, reminds me of the Arctic Monkeys
Warning Birds - Official Website - soft, sad songs. An interesting sound. No opinion formed yet.
Oh Mercy - Tumblr - the sounds of Neil Finn and Crowded House brought back to us in the new generation.
Red Rhinos - Facebook page - A young band with a pretty generic rock sound. Maybe they'll be someone some day, right now they're just average.
Roscoe James Irwin - Soundcloud - Folk and pop. A simple, fun band to listen to.
Belle Roscoe - Official Website - Indie rock, with a cool violin background. Worth exploring.
The Twoks - Official Website - Happy poppy. very girly.
Quarry Mountain Dead Rats - Triple J Unearthed - folk, bluegrass. quite interesting.
Ash Grunwald - Wordpress - Reggae? not sure how to classify this. a fun sound though, very chilled.
Mojo Juju - Official Website - Former singer of "The Snake Oil Merchants", with a heavy bass line.
Stillwater Giants - Myspace - Reminds me of alient ant farm somewhat. Not a bad sound.
Soul safari - Myspace - soul, funk, Rnb. Not usually my stile, but I did enjoy their demo. Very smooth and the singer has a nice voice.
Client Liason - Soundcloud - Dance, very 80s.
Loon Lake - Official Website - Very fun indiepop band, famous for their song "cherry lips".
Blue juice - Myspace - Kind of indie? Very rythmic. rather generic, tbh.
Kashmere Club - Triple J Unearthed - Feels a bit like a power ballad. Emotional lyrics and a heavy sound.
Straylove - Soundcloud - A mix with electronic music which reminds me of the 90s. Not bad at all.
Abbie Cardwell & The Chicano Rockers - Official Website - A fun, energetic, Mexican-inspired band with lots of instruments.
Northeast Party House - Myspace - Playing on bend trash cans and other weird improvised instruments they sing a nice poprock rhythm, good for moving around.
Better than the Wizards - Official Website - slow and groovy lovesongs. Kinda house maybe?
Sub Atari Knives - Official Website -

not finished yet, got 5 more bands to listen to before I go there tomorrow.
