Ten Seconds to Midnight

I gets a feeling that's just some dude chillin' on the rooftop. Otherwise it could just be some ventilation exhaust waiting to be revealed as a huge middle finger to the people holding huge anticipations over that silhouette is a suicidal Lucy.

Also I remember Taeshi commenting on a page ages ago about it being the first time Augustus' name was being shown in the comic. he already had a name before but it never appeared in the comic or something? Or was that another character? I can't really recall.

It's hard to determine just what's going on in Lucy's mind. Is she actually considering suicide? She knows that her family is concerned about her, and that she has other friends she can lean on, like Paulo and Sue. She knows that letting go of Mike doesn't mean the end of the world, because Augustus told her that. Perhaps she's not suicidal, perhaps she's just mulling things over while watching the world pass by. After all, she does have that nice fluffy fur coat, so she's not as cold as might otherwise be the case. Perhaps she's decided to make a new start, to begin a new life without being too dependent on any one person. It is New Year's Eve after all, and the time for making resolutions.

Might Augustus on the other hand think that Lucy is considering suicide? Will he say something to her to try to bring her down? He may be rough and snarky, and he may not care about a lot of people, but that doesn't mean he has no empathy whatsoever.

No, you're right. We knew Augustus' name well before he was actually referred to as such in the comic. This is the first in-comic mention of Augustus' full name (as opposed to "Gussie", "creeper", "that older guy", "Siamese guy" [he is not actually Siamese] or "Final Fantasy Cat").

I'm wondering what kind of building that is. If that's Roseville High School, Augustus made quite some effort to walk all the way from home when it's over an hour away by bus. The school would probably be locked up anyway, preventing any unauthorized from gaining access to the rooftop in the first place. If that unidentified object really is Lucy, could it happen to be actually taking place in the same town Augustus lives? It was after all implied Lucy could been about to be brought somewhere. If that's the case, I would pretty much go for what wacko was speculating on.

I'm also worried over the fact my previous semi-drunk post has forced me into a gladiator fight with wacko. The only thing I feels I'm really better at is ironically being a wacko.

I kinda doubt it's Lucy...but you never know. It's nice that Augustus cares enough, though. If it wasn't Lucy, would Augustus still care enough about a stranger to prevent a suicide? I know that seems like a no brainer to some people, but still. And how'd he get up to the top of the building so damn quickly? He's fast.

You know what Augustus' surprised expression reminds me of? Taeshi's Art Meme (I'd post it here but I'm afraid it'd be too big and prove to be cumbersome for this thread). Recall, if you will, the Memorable Scene section, where Taeshi partially blocked off the "LOL Various Spoilers" section. You can make out a surprised expression from Augustus. You know what that means. THE PROPHECY IS BEING REALIZED!

Molly travels back to the past to kill herself by jumping from a building just as Abbey is walking past, to further traumatising him. Abbey spends the rest of his days in a padded cell and a straight jacket, mumbling to himself and looking at his own nose.

also, on the Augustus' name topic, I looked back and David calls him "Final Fantasy Cat" because he remind him of one the characters, way before Augustus' name actually shows up in the comic.

Augustus' hobby is apparently to approach mopey girls, having the intent of straightening their mentality. Lucy is however a special case, because she's a challenge(d).

It also appears we've indeed hit the middle scene of LOL VARIOUS SPOILERS. I could never realize the upper picture was resembling someone next to a roof ledge, while the lower picture of Augustus is him witnessing that.

I wonder if he'll try guilting her again because "YER PROBLEMS AIN'T AS BAD AS MAH PROBLEMS". Which is an awful thing to do, since there's always someone worse off than you.

I was wondering if this chapter had shown different events taken place at different times, but now I'm not so sure. I had assumed that Augustus had left his house at night. Or perhaps it was early morning. Or maybe it was just black and white for the scene.

I would say the first page of the chapter is black and white, or else it's dark in Augustus' house (i.e. no lights on). It would be probably early in the evening as Augustus goes out for a walk. Taeshi specified there are no flashbacks in this chapter, so the scenes should be roughly in chronological order.

Not sure what type of building they're on top of. An apartment building seems most likely to have open stair access to the roof. The windows appear to be more like office windows, but most offices (not to mention Roseville High) would be closed at this point, it being New Year's Eve. I also wonder if this building lies somewhere between the school and Augustus' house. Even then, it'd still be quite a long walk in the snow for Augustus, as was pointed out earlier. Over an hour by bus implies more time than that by foot. Unless maybe he coughed up the bus fare and got off shortly before this point (maybe on his way to Tess' house, who knows).

In any case, he seems to care enough about Lucy to stop her from potentially jumping off the ledge, if that's what she was about to do. Though even then, she might not die from it; cats are rather good at landing compared to dogs, as shown by this page.

I got a theory that the current scene might be taking place in the city of Maraschino. Mike claimed it's about 45 minutes away by bus when he was going to try pursue Sandy in "Hot Pursuit". If this city happens to be located between Roseville and the town Augustus lives in, it would mean it could be about 15 minutes by bus between Maraschino and Augustus' home. It would still be quite a walk, but Augustus got himself an extra layer of clothing. Albeit, why Lucy would have been brought away from Roseville at this time is an uncertain matter.

Augustus could possibly been unable to identify the person on the roof from ground-level. Maybe he cares for troubled people more than one might expect? If he noticed it was Lucy upon a closer look, I expects him to take it with despise and annoyance. Lucy got a great life and she basically neglects it because of something that happened in kindergarten. Augustus' life on the other hand has always been garbage, but that doesn't stop him. I could interpret that as Augustus takes it as an insult for someone to to suicide when Augustus would gladly trade that individual's life with his own.

Nevertheless does Augustus seem to found an acceptance of Lucy's company during recess. They got after all a similar cynicism, even if Augustus finds Lucy intrusive and irritating for often having his sentences interrupted. He also seems to pity her for being rather pathetic. It's actually funny how Augustus supports a person that also happens to be a target of his boss' revenge plot.

Or maybe he doesn't actually live an hour away. Could have just been a convenient thing to say to deter Lucy from tagging along on his bus. Moreover, maybe he implied he lived over an hour away via his school bus route. I remember my bus ride taking 30 minutes (before I had a license). I was basically the last kid off the bus at the end of the day. Once I got my own set of wheels I made that same trip in 5 minutes. Point is, Augustus is probably not as far away as you might think.

It could indeed have only been an intended exaggeration by Augustus. There is however an even more distant town the cast arrived to when they disembarked at Cinder Station. According to Sue's mother that would be approximately 2 hours by car from Roseville. What makes it relevant to the matter is it appears to be the town Alejandro lives in, the boss of the same gang Augustus is in.

I would neither expect Augustus to walk a distance corresponding 45 minutes by bus. Lucy on the other hand maybe was brought to the same town Augustus lives in by Sam for some yet-to-be-explained reason.

I don't think Lucy is in Maraschino. She really has no reason to go there, nor would Sam take her that far without asking questions. Furthermore, if Lucy does have suicidal thoughts (which we don't know for a fact yet), then she would hardly need to go as far as Maraschino to find a four-story building to jump off of. Recall that the BCB setting is based on suburban New Jersey, hence there would almost certainly be buildings of a suitable height much closer to the Roseville area.

As for Maraschino, it is allegedly supposed to be based on New York City. One notes that Maraschino is where Paulo used to live (and also where his mother still lives). Also that's where Paulo's barking phobia originated. Hence at least some of Alejandro's gang seem to originally be from Paulo's neighbourhood. (Note that Alejandro says "it's been years", and I don't think he's referring to only two years previously.) So it's possible Alejandro too is originally from Maraschino, and perhaps that's where Augustus lives as well, since he was a part of Alejandro's gang from a young age.

I think Taeshi once explained away Augustus' long bus ride as being that some of the worse kids were occasionally sent to school in another district. Unfortunately I can't find that post just now though. Though I admit crossing state boundaries to attend high school is a bit of a stretch, especially with the Hudson River in between.

Some parents try to trick the school zoning to get their kids into a better school. I had a friend in school who lived in the opposite side of town. She gave her aunt's address when she enrolled. Though that might be a bit much to expect from augustus' parents.

Though maybe we should really not look too closely at the details. Just remember the MST3k mantra.

Also viking. Geeze, your english is so ... jumbled. Are you Swedish or Norwegian or something?

Migrant's guess is correct, I'm indeed a Scandinavian. I am, however, not sure if my poorly structured language is because of English is foreign to me. Still, it would probably help if my English teacher could say something more than "You got a good language". At least I've realized there is something more I could do in order to improve my lingual skills.

Na, my native language is Portuguese and I don't think his mistakes and mannerisms are typical of a Portuguese or Spanish speaker.

The name was a bit of a giveaway as well.

But yes, Viking, your most obvious error is putting an 's' at the end of a present tense verb where it's not needed. For example, the following quote:

Viking said:

I expects him to take it with despise and annoyance.

See the following conjugation as an example:

I expect
you expect
he/she/it expects
we expect
you expect
they expect

You'll note that one only needs to add the 's' at the end of the verb for the third person singular.

But otherwise, your English grammar is quite good, even if your word order is a bit convoluted sometimes. To take another example:

Viking said:

Nevertheless does Augustus seem to found an acceptance of Lucy's company during recess.

In English, the subject usually precedes the verb, and also the auxiliary verb if there is one. So the correct English would be as follows: "Nevertheless Augustus does seem to have found an acceptance of Lucy's company during recess." (Note the present perfect tense in "have found".)

Of course the situation would be different if the statement were a question, because then the auxiliary verb would most often precede the subject. For example: "Does Augustus seem to have found an acceptance of Lucy's company?"

Wow, Migrant, I wouldn't expect my native language to be estimated by analyzing errors in my writing. :O I assumed my username was the only hint.

Thanks to your convenient clarification, wacko, I'm able to see the conjugation mistake I'm making. I will keep in mind that the suffix "s" only belongs to third person singular.

When it comes to word order, it often ends up with me being uncertain. Now when I got to reread my sentence in correct English, I was quick to realize it. Perhaps I was being slightly confused by the auxiliary verb "do", being that the Norwegian and Swedish language has no equivalent to it.

It took me a good deal of time to process your post, but it feels like I've actually learned something. It's really appreciated! I will make sure this knowledge isn't reduced to a mere hypercorrection.

While I'm laughing intensely at the similarities to Disaster Dominoes, Augustus's face is too cute last panel. Like his honest concern over Lucy is really cute, and kinda makes her seem like a huge bitch cause I feel like this is some fucked up plan of hers yo.
