I'm guessing this is a dream of Augustus' (triggered by his earlier conversation w/ Lucy in "December"). Lucy will jump to her death, the reader will turn the page, and we'll see Augustus waking up in some back alley wondering why the fuck he is so worried about Lucy.

If Lucy is seriously going to jump, this proves how psychologically messed up she is.
She's had some hard times in her life, sure. But many of those were her issues regarding Mike. Now, even though the rest of her life isn't so bad, she is possibly considering jumping to her death because Mike doesn't like her anymore.
I also love that tons of people in the comments are convinced Augustus is madly in love with her because he doesn't want her to jump.

A dream would explain Augustus' encounter with Lucy in the middle of a New Year's Eve. It's possible he could wake up with a bad conscience, but I believes he wouldn't make a big deal out of it.
Otherwise it's uncertain how they managed to cross their path during this time. Maybe it could be according to earlier speculations that Augustus somehow managed transportation for whatever business he got in Roseville. I guess it wouldn't be way too preposterous for him to snoop around like a little gremlin, watching other families' happiness.
Also, lets assume Augustus is eager to have the honor of pushing Lucy off the ledge. That would totally make a strip for "Augustus you Jerk!".

Another theory o Augustus' proximity to Roseville here could be that it wasn't his home he left earlier, but just some place where his parents had been partying. A friend's house or some extended family.

Augustus believes Lucy is about to jump to her death, but I don't believe that is her intention. She'd have to be pretty deranged to be smiling just as she's about to commit suicide right in front of him, and I don't think she's that far gone. No, I think there's a tree or something on that side which we can't see. (That could even explain how she got up there. Cats are pretty good at climbing.) So all in all, a nice joke on poor concerned Augustus, eh?
As for what Lucy is doing up there in the first place, well, perhaps that's just a thinking place for her, way up high where she can ponder the wintry landscape. (After all, Lucy loves winter.) But if that's a location in Roseville or close to it, then it remains to be explained what Augustus is doing there. Nope, not what I meant. I mean, it was probably useless to say anyhow, but I figured I'd point it out--it's actually just the picture used for Augustus's entry. I don't recall seeing it so far. Considering he doesn't appear distressed--just vaguely thoughtful--I doubt she jumps or really does anything too terrible .. but I dunno
Considering Augustus goes for the "miserable types", I imagine he would get closer to Lucy from this point on since she's a wreck. Not that he'll ever be all sweet with her as he was with Daisy, but yeah, not going to be surprised if they start hanging out and whatever. She'll probably need him to get a kick into her senses.

- Taeshi has stated that Abbey crying was meant to represent chapter 69, "At Loose Ends", except that she found it wasn't really logical to show him quite that way.
- Here we assume that Tess crying represents chapter 67, "Fade Away".

Oh, good eye! I hadn't considered the new image of Augustus on the About page. He's wearing the sweater underneath his poncho which we haven't seen other than in this chapter. Taeshi does have a bit of a buffer, so it's quite possible that image is from a page we haven't seen yet.

Oh my god, so much for taking learning. I guess I'll be a Toki Wartooth until I get my head around this lingual issue. It's like a subconscious signature there the 's' stands for Scandinavian.
To be honest, I was barely even aware of Toki's errors until I got clarified of this issue. I just assumed it to be correct English. Heck, I even used to say stuffs like "womens" myself.

Anyhow, Lucy's smile certainly gives pretty psychotic vibes while she's turning back to the heights. Augustus might have just expected her to be typically self-pitying and mopey, not a lifeless shell purged from any emotions what-so-ever. Augustus surely got himself an unexpected surprise.
Lucy, on the other hand, might have not intended to receive any attention. Neither might she intend to suicide, even if she's being crazy by standing on the ledge like that. Maybe she felt she needed to distance herself from her family, depending on what they was talking about.

Na, wacko. I'm pretty sure Lucy was at least seriously considering jumping. Her smile is just 'cause she was happy to have someone who cares. Augustus might easily convince her not to jump, and she might pretend it was never her intention. But she's been seriously gloomy since her last meeting with Mike, I can easily imagine her wanting to kill herself (which could have been further exaggerated by whatever her family was planning).

I remember Daisy falling off the top of a cheer leading pyramid and landing on her feet and hands so they are like real cats but even if Lucy falls correctly she may still brake her legs and arms witch would make for some interesting drama and we would get Lucy in a wheelchair.

I admit that I don't know what it's like to be suicidal. I've only suffered from "depression" (not clinical depression) once, and while I've had my moments of feeling worthless, I never once wanted to die. So I can't truly say that I know what Lucy's thinking right now.
On the other hand, Augustus has already bluntly told Lucy that she'd be worthless if she threw her life away simply because Mike rejected her. And Lucy respects Augustus' blunt honesty, otherwise she wouldn't have talked to him. Plus we do have an assurance of sorts: no one in the canon story dies other than Charlotte (and possibly a couple of the fan characters, depending on if their deaths are still canon). In fact, even in the bad ending, no one dies.
On the other hand, Augustus has already bluntly told Lucy that she'd be worthless if she threw her life away simply because Mike rejected her. In any case, Lucy now (probably) knows what her family was considering doing. How does that play into her current actions? Would one of these options make her more likely to consider suicide? Yet she must know that her family is very concerned about her and wants to help her. Perhaps she does not want to be a burden to them anymore? Maybe it's a good thing Augustus showed up; she can be reminded of his words in "December".
- Could Lucy's mom be considering sending her to a therapist/psychologist/psychiatrist? That wouldn't be abandoning Lucy at all, in fact it would be helping her. And it would be the logical first step to deal with depression.
- Could Lucy's mom be considering sending her to a mental hospital? That seems a bit extreme for a first step, considering Lucy had been depressed for less than two weeks. Nevertheless it could explain Lucy's mom's fear that her daughter would think she's abandoning her.
- Could Lucy's mom be considering sending her to an all-female boarding school to get her away from boys for a while? It's possible, especially considering that Jordan thought that one of her friends (if not Paulo specifically) was responsible for her current state of mind. And again, that would bring in the abandonment angle.
- Some other legitimate and practical option besides the above, that I might not have thought of?

Lucy may be smiling from the irony of it. Augustus is the one who told her suicide is idiotic and that doing it makes you worthless, and here he is, the only one who comes to her when she's about to go through with it, the one saying "Why are you throwing your life away?" panicking, proving she means something.
Also she might just burst into laughter that Augustus thought she was going to jump and that it cracked through his "don't care" facade. Sometimes going through emotional pain like that can make you quite cynical.

I haven't been following the comic lately, now that I'm up to date, I have to say that I like where the story is going. I read that one top comment by Solvek, and kind of agreed with him, the comic didn't seem to be going anywhere, but it's really getting interesting. I like it when the comic is deep and dark, I find it interesting when comics cover topics like suicide, etc...

I can totally see how someone would think like that comment. All that's really happened in 2012 in the "main" Lucy plot is Paulo going to Lucy's house and getting turned away, and Lucy looking sad at the end of Just Beautiful. That's it. The year was soaked up by Abbey's past, Mike meeting Sandy and a few months of the intro chapter. It's easy to see that you could get burned out on caring about Lucy when your past year's memory of her is limited to two small and similar events.
Of course, that's all over with now. The next year won't be devoted to Lucy either, but the next few chapters are certainly all about the core set of characters. School is coming back and the characters are going to have to interact. Plus there's one secret thing we have in mind that will really get the (present) story moving.
I do wonder, though, do people find the pacing of this comic unusually slow-moving for a long-form webcomic? I've always thought it was obviously written as a story better suited for all-at-once graphic novel style reading, and it only gets by as a webcomic because Veronica's really good at plotting out each page (so that each page tells a tiny story and has a satisfying conclusion - i.e. good comic writing.)
I don't think BCB is necessarily slow in its energy or plotting, but I am curious if readers of other long-form comics feel that it gets much less accomplished in the same amount of updates, and why they think that might be so.

I don't think BCB is necessarily slow in its energy or plotting, but I am curious if readers of other long-form comics feel that it gets much less accomplished in the same amount of updates, and why they think that might be so.

I personally think that the pacing is a hooking point to the story, it doesn't rush itself and make everything seem trivial nor does it move slowly enough to cause me to lose interest
Accomplishing something faster won't mean it has been done better especially if that siphons off the quality of what is being produced
The last few chapter especially have been really engrossing for me and I don't think after seeing them as they are now that I'd be satisfied with anything different

i don't mind the pacing much? i mean, i was really surprised to notice yesterday that december was posted in 2011
but, when i think about it, the pacing hasn't really been the problem. it's just that the attention has been split away from lucy; there was abbey's chapter, mike's chapter, paulo's chapter, and the summary. there's hardly been any lucy this year at all. so, i guess i can understand why any caring would be drained away after it being so long, but i don't think that has anything to do with things being too "slow".
but anyway, i enjoy the pacing we have now because it kinda gives me time to soak things in..? not sure how to describe it. there's something to observe and think about in every page (as suitcase pretty much said) and i think that's what makes everything sit well with me!!
