70 proof is on the spirits end of the alcohol barometer, so drink it in smaller glasses, or mix it with something (like I do). What Jerk is suggesting is that you skip the whole 'smaller glasses thing/mix it up' and just chug the standard drink. The purpose of this is so that you can actually understand what the taste is like. He is not trolling you. This is actually a very sensible (and cheap!) way of getting to try some different spirits.
I wouldn't say "chugging" because they're really very small but, yes, the idea is to get him acquainted without wrecking his wallet. I'd suggest trying the base liquor of anything before going for a mixed drink, unless you're at a bar or something and you don't know what the base is.
Watch out for tequila though: you have to read the fine print. If it doesn't say "100% Agave" it is fake tequila. Cuervo is the biggest offender and is not representative of tequila in general. (Blue Full Throttle energy drinks are basically the flavor without the alcohol and metric shit ton of sugar).

So a 100 proof drink would be 50% ethanol.
Morgan's Black Label. Oh man, I quit it a year ago but I can't help but smile at the shit I did. But I only drink during special occasions now, like if my dad brings out his reserve bottle of sake at the sushi restaurant we frequent. He is a drunken maniac, literally, but I'll be damned if that'll keep me from the best damn sushi/sake in Dallas.
On an unrelated note, my brother (while attending college) has found employment as a bartender.
