Why does the BSCB site freeze my computer?

I use Firefox and when I load up the site, the page loads but nothing else does. I can't scroll or even move my mouse. It locks down everything for up to 2 minutes and cuts off my music if I have it playing. What about the site does that and is it fixable? It's so bad I've considered leaving the readerbase...

Does using another browser fix it?
  • #2

Does re installing Firefox fix it?
  • #3

Which version of Firefox is it? Which OS are you using? Can you reliably reproduce it?

Please answer all three questions as accurately as you can and I will hopefully find a solution.

This actually happen to me as well, but only in candybooru that I can tell, I've mostly just ignored it.

I'm running Chrome 25.0.1364.152 and Windows 7. I can;t tell what causes it because it doesn't happen all the time, but it is fairly regular.

I've had it occur in Firefox 19.0.2 and Chrome (Unknown version, long since removed). I'm using Windows Vista and it hasn't happened today yet. I do know that it happens whether it's the only site open or in multiple tabs, of only Firefox running, or multiple programs so I can't seem to pinpoint the cause. I've reinstalled Firefox only a few weeks ago and it began much sooner than that and still happens.

I think this used to happen to me fairly often before I switched to Chrome.

Just a suggestion, but it could be a problem with a Firefox plugin, Flash in particular (if there are Flash ads running on the main site). Perhaps go to the Plugin Check page and make sure all your plugins are up to date.

I believe this is Typekit, and I'm somewhat insulated from it because I use the site frequently so the fonts are always in cache. I am asking about it and will follow up in this thread when I get a response.

I have thought about removing Typekit from the site and purchasing the fonts to host locally. This would be a generally good idea because it minimises the amount the site can be affected by external services. However, it'd cost $180 to license the fonts, and I haven't been feeling very affluent lately.

BSCB :: The British Society for Cell Biology :: www.bscb.org

seems fine to me.

Mizuki and Miw, how reliably can you reproduce this problem? Is there a sure fire way to make it occur? If you could play around to find a way to make it happen, I could ask you to check if a certain tweak fixes it.
  • #11

Vista.

I found your problem.
  • #12

No, because it happens to Miw who is using Windows 7.

I've spent a while this morning trying to reproduce it, and I haven't managed to yet. From previous occurrences it seems to happen when I try to tab away while the page is still loading, but I can't figure out any surefire way to make it happen.
  • #14

I would have thought that it'd happen the first time the browser loads the page, IF there is no font in the cache. Can you try emptying cache in your browser, quitting it, then restarting it and going to the BCB site? You don't have to clear history, just the cache.

If that does it, see if that's a surefire reproducible method of getting the delay.

Alright, the first time I did that it did cause the freeze to happen, and since you seem to think the font is the problem, I feel I should point out that the pictures loaded, but none of the writing did before it froze. On subsequent attempts though, it did not cause any delay.
  • #16

Cleared cache and it did not freeze. Since posting this I have not found any way to reproduce and in fact hasn't frozen since
  • #17

Miw, when you say "on subsequent attempts", did those attempts involve clearing cache like the first time?

Yes, I cleared the cache between each attempt.

Is it possible it could be one of the ads? Every once and a while I get a message that a scrit is running longer then expected and it asks me if I want to cancle the script. The script is always from another site so I am pretty sure that it is an ad.

I should mention that I only get these mesages on the forum and Candybooru. I can't access the main page because my work blocks it.
  • #20

I isolate the ads in iframes so that shouldn't happen. It is, unfortunately, still a possibility. Ad services can often act up.
  • #21

This story has a sad ending.

This problem is either due to TypeKit or ads. It shouldn't be TypeKit because we use their asynchronous code. It shouldn't be ads as they're isolated in iframes.

I cannot reproduce the issue. The people having the issue cannot reproduce the issue. It just happens sometimes. I have no idea how to fix this problem and neither do TypeKit and neither would the ad companies. So I cannot do a thing.

Please, please tell me if you guys can ever figure out a way to reproduce this, or at least "this happens 50% of the time I do X". A simple scenario like that means I can change things on the site and see if anything knocks out the problem, but until then it's just an impossible issue to resolve, even if I am really upset by it and want it resolved as fast as possible.
  • #22

Miw, Mix, is this happening on any other websites or only bcb? I've had lockups a while ago and it is a tricky thing to resolve.
  • #23

I'll definitely pop back in if I notice anything. I doubt it's ads by the way, I don't get ads when I go to the page, it's all BCB stuff
  • #24

You mean, you use Adblock? That helps narrow it down.
  • #25

Yes
  • #26

That would mean it's not likely that an ad caused the freeze.
