How Would You Define? Because the meaning is driving me crazy!

I searched the forums and didn't find anything like this, and I figure "Hey, people are always confused about defenitions and understandings and common use of certain phrases so why not make a topic about it?"

Obviously to start off I'd need an example, a phrase that confuses myself and I need help clarifying and so I do!

"LOVE TRIANGLE"

Now, by my understanding of the phrase, this means we find three people in a relationship issue with A liking B, B liking C, and then C's liking is where I get all tangled up.

Lucy, Mike, and Sandy are the perfect example. I hear of them being a love triangle but my thoughts are that all we make is an upside down carrot sticking out of the ground because the way I see it for them to be a love triangle, THIS would have to become a reality.

All too often I see this situation where three are in a relationship, it's called a love triangle and someone isn't a lover of the same gender. A love square I see as fully possible, but a triangle I can't see happening by my understanding of the defenition unless we get lesbians involved here.(I know I sound like I'm joking but I'm being serious, although now I laugh hysterically as I type this)

Is there something to the term Love Triangle I'm not quite understanding or is my logic sound?

Wow. I was hoping that no one would link to TV Tropes. Dick Move, dude. But since the damage has already been done, I'll just say that the Triang Relations page is more comprehensive. The Lucy/Mike/Sandy triangle is a type 4. It used to be a type 1 (maybe even a type 10) but you didn't know about C at the time.

And of course love triangles don't work. They're all sorts of wobbly and unstable. That's why they make good entertainment.

Thank you to Scotch, that one answered more properly, not to mention got some conversation going which is mainly what I was going for (rather than simply saying I'll just leave this here and leaving a link. Seriously, not cool...).

But alright, my answer, or at least that one, has been answered.

But that doesn't mean topic done. As I said, this is also for anyones questions of a similar manner. Got an issue? Ask away and perhaps we can have some conversations on it, rather than just posting links. Afterall, isn't that what forums are for? Deep, entertaining conversation about different topics and our views on them?

I'm done...T_T

I was just lovingly criticizing him for linking to TV Tropes of all places. What a dreadfultastic place.

I think we have gone far beyond 'love triangle'
  • #8

2 people like the same other person
Other person cannot choose/only likes one/likes both

Simple

A love triangle is not supposed to be a complete triangle, it's only A likes B, B likes C and that's it(no disrespect). :nope:

Well, any type of relation is allowed as long as it's sufficiently interesting and confusing and only involves three people. The reason love triangles make good entertainment is because someone has to end up getting let down, whatever their relation is in the beginning. Unless you believe that OT3 is the answer. And it almost always is.

It's possible to have a successful threesome, however in practice such a relationship is extremely difficult to maintain. For a threesome to work, there can't be any hidden secrets. Each person has to know their role and cooperate with the other two people.

Why do people always bitch about Tv Tropes being linked? I love the shit outta that place.
  • #13

Who said they didn't like tv tropes?!?
  • #14

My word was dreadfultastic. I'm not necessarily complaining. I believe that mixed is the emotion one should have toward TV Tropes.

Well, this is a general statement. I've seen people whine in other communities so I'm surprised there's the same bitchery here.

Well, I'm certainly not being very serious. I love it too, but it really is a rather counterproductive place.

My main issue is just that I made this with the intent of just anyone posting any phrasings they had issues with, not just my own. Never had any issues with Tropes. Honestly? I've never even really touched the place enough to have any reason to complain.

But it seems to have turned into everyone giving the exact same answer to Love Triangle...

Lastly, yes, I'm aware this comic is far more than just a love triangle I was saying in the first post that's where I heard about it, and wanted to have an answer. Honestly? It doesn't confuse me a whole lot, I was just having an example moreso than not of what I was hoping this thread wuld turn up to be. (when I typed I'm serious, I had meant the one sentence alone, not the whole paragraph my example for the most part was a joke and I was hoping my link would be a give-away...I've also been told I have an unbelievably dry sense of humor perhaps tis true?)

I hope this will get it across since this is the, second or third, time I've said my intentions here, but meh, whatever. Not a big deal, I've been on forums before and fully understand some threads work, some don't. Odds are this wasn't a very good idea, or at the very least, a poorly explained idea. Besides, everyone here is far too lovable and through the internet to actually get upset with :-* .

The problem is, I think, that if you at first make a visit you need to visit absolutely everything else to make any sense out of it. Unless the pleasure is in the journey, in which case you still need to visit absolutely everything.

Not a word against it, though. Just a comment on the state of things. ^_^

So in other words, Mike is E, Lucy is F, Daisy is A, Sandy is B (the one Mike loves), and two other random chicks are C and D.
