Carch's Arts and Writing - Now With Streaming!

[i]SURPRISE:

I was worried I wouldn't be able to keep up with Scarlet, so I spent most of the night editing and finishing it. Hope you enjoy!

Edit: I forgot to add a few things when I posted the rewritten story, particularly when it comes to Detective O'Brien/Oishi.
When I first started writing, I had forgotten Oishi's name. I only remembered it as beginning with an "O" so I named him O'Brien, keeping the first vowel and "Americanizing" his name. I actually didn't like that. I had also "transformed" him into the first canine I could think of. Both of these have been changed. Finally, I had him chewing Nicotine gum, since Oishi was a smoker in the anime.
In Higurashi, Oishi was fat, smoked, and a really nasty detective when you were in his crosshairs as a suspect. So when I rewrote and finished the story, I made him a bulldog. I actually think the character would have no problems smoking around kids--he doesn't in Higurashi. So, I ditched the more PC nicotine gum and gave him cigarettes.

Deleted. See story (Scarlet) on third page.

Stupid Deviant Art erasing my comments and updates. Anyone else having this problem?

Still, thanks to Maverik I have finally reached a second draft of The Night Sea. Funny enough, the problem I saw with it wasn't the problem. Still, I would like feedback on this new draft. Please post it here since dA is being a pain.

Color, inking, and partial shading on Steven Somers.

I plan on doing more work to it, but I'm happy with how it turned out so far.

EDIT: Following Sushi's advice, I altered the clothes.

If his sleeve is that loose, it should be sliding down his left arm, being crumpled a little. Try and make your clothes seem less like a static second skin.
  • #54

Yeah, I suck at clothes. Any suggestions on how I could do that?
Also, thanks for the tip on the left arm. ><

I'm no illustrator of any sort myself, but it seems like the best way would be to maybe draw the outline of the clothes over the actual body of the character being drawn. Make note of joints and muscles when drawing tight clothes, and places where the material would be forced to bend, move, tighten, etc. You could also try looking at pictures of real-life clothing closely and making note of the fold lines and such. When it comes to that left sleev just remember that if something like a sleeve is going to looks like it's slipped down, don't just make it shorter. Add crumples and shit like that to make it look realistic.

Also, unless they're form-fitting, clothes are always pulled down by gravity. Keep that in mind. On the right arm it looks sort of like the jacket's material is just levitating in space. Try pulling the top edge down so it moulds the character's arm and elbow joint on the top, but hangs loose on the underside. If his arm is bent like that, as well, make sure the sleeve dips further towards the ground at the elbow to show the crook of the arm.

Thanks, Sushi. I've actually already been doing that XD
And yeah, I won't post the revised version until it's "final." So feel free to pick apart this drawing in the mean time, guys!

Linked to this in my profile, but since some people are finding it funny:

Firstly of all, I meant you should actually MOVE the clothes. Don't just add rumples to the sleeve and leave it in place, even though that makes it look a lot better than before. Actually drop the sleeve along his forearm until it reaches the elbow, then draw it bunched up as best you can. The right trouser leg shouldn't be covering his ankle if his knee is bent to that degree, unless he's wearing some seriously baggy trousers. As for the left leg, bring the right side (from my perspective) against the leg and extend the left side out a little. If you stretch your leg out while wearing jeans, you'll notice that the material draws around your leg and hangs loose on the underside.

Try and lift the collar from the neck a little, too. Shade the skin around the edge of the collar if you don't want to actually move it, but I think it'd be best if you actually showed the collar as not being pressed against his collarbone. Same with the white shirt, I'm not sure if it'd be pressing against his skin so much. 'Course, that depends entirely on whether or not the material is stretched and blah blah blah stuff you need to decide for yourself.
  • #58

Thanks Sushi.
Sank the sleeve down. I'll add the wrinkles a bit later.
Fixed the legs. (I think).
Altered the collar slightly and did some shading. It doesn't show too well here, for some reason.

The left leg still needs work, I'll get to that later.

An Inking/redrawing of Fiona Carter from the previous page.

Actually, only the face is inked. I redrew the body and then added the clothes. I haven't shaded yet, but I will update with the shaded version later on. Shaded!

Suggestions and comments are very much encouraged!

Fiona, like Roderigo and Steven, is one of the central characters of the Deathscape saga (I'm currently only in the mythos arc, they won't come into play until the main arc). She is a 3rd generation hybrid, a descendant of domestic cats infused with a large number of human genes. Because of her background (and the source of her human genes), she is legally considered a cousin to both Roderigo and Steven.

Fully-shaded, fully colored "completed" Roderigo Somers.

That sword is a weapon that is nicknamed "The White Flame of Heaven and Hell." It is essentially a Shashka, built for two hands rather than one. I emits a light visible only in darkness and burns whatever it touches (except the wielder it chooses). Attempting to hold it when you aren't accepted by the blade will cause you to be slowly incinerated.

Eris Dialgo, from Fallen. She's Lynx Dialgo's tavati, his older sister. The two share a very... strained relationship. Her job is technically head of the military (she's a permanent Major General) and she is a member of the Council of Nobles, the country of Hirand's Head of Government.

That head is far too fucking massive.
  • #75

Thanks Sushi.
The head was actually smaller than it appeared (it seemed so huge because of the cheek fur) and honestly was the only thing I hadn't altered from the original pencil image. I fixed it now, tell me if it looks better.

Though if you were referring to Fiona, let me know. I can fix that as well.

Yeah, I suppose the cheekfur does give an optical illusion. Getting better with making the clothes and body seem more 3D, though. Mind you, Eris seems to have a nonexistent chin. If you're doing a full on view, the jawline should always overlap the neck.

The Daemon Blade "Ion" and its many "mod sines," or alterations.

Ion is the fourth strongest Daemon blade, and the strongest of the Lesser Blades. Ion has the title of "The Masticating Fangs," and has the ability to break down an opponent's body and absorb and utilize its energy. Only a sentient being who is not human can wield it, and using it's mod sines is nearly impossible, as it requires a body not obtainable by normal means.

Mod sines, right to left: Denticuli Mandacara, Teli Dividendus, Malfortuna, Ungui Velus.

Holy shit I just literally yesterday invented an expansion of earlier antiaura technology that does the "breaking down a body" thing. It doesn't utilize the energy it releases, though, but goddamn.
Formerly the material was only used for bullets that had a negative mana field around them but I expanded on that and figured out knives and other blades made of it would work in a similar way. In addition, I made the effect much stronger, capable of breaking down a body after mere minutes of prolonged physical contact with the blade. Wounding strenghtens the effect and enough wounds will literally cause a body to quickly dissipate into a cloud of dust in a rather explosive manner.

That is to say, we seem to think alike in some things. Apart from the fact that AMAG in my stories is a technology created by an arms corporation of the same name and based on properties of fictional metals.
  • #80

Yeah, the central idea was that its function was similar to "digestion," breaking down organic matter and utilizing it. Since I'm going to be doing this as a series, I'll just list all 6 daemon blades, strongest to weakest:

Daivos
Power: Assimilation. Absorbs that which it kills, body and soul, and integrates it into the blade. Nicknamed "Shard of the Abyss."

Saloi-Asyai
Power: Incineration. Can both burn as it cuts, and trap enemies too strong for this inside it. Once inside, there is no easy escape. Nicknamed "The White Flame of Heaven and Hell."

Thanatos
Power: Death. One part skewers for an instant kill (basically a guardless Estoc) and the other, a very rounded scythe, kill whatever it cuts, no matter how superficial the cut. Basically, if it severs a single strand of hair, you die. Nicknamed "Blade of Death."

Ion
Power: Digestion. Breaks down the target's body and utilizes it. Can also send the energy absorbed to its wielder. Nicknamed "Masticating Fangs."

Kilios
Power: Annihilation. When separated, the two blades dramatically boost the user's speed. When combined, they boost its physical strength. Nicknamed "Slivers of Chaos."

Nightwalker
Power: Purification. Kills daemons. Its status as a true Daemon blade is questionable. Nicknamed, "The Daemon's Bane."

They're all deities, aren't they?

Or rather, the manifestations of deities
  • #82

Well, no. They're weapons, they just aren't crafted by human hands.

In Deathscape, "Daemon" refers to anything less powerful than a god yet more powerful than a spirit. Daemons were specifically created by the gods as a slave race, and among them were the Daemon Blades. So they are (somewhat) sentient, and are way beyond anything a normal human can handle (holding one of the top three, the Higher Blades, will kill you in a horrible way unless it decides it wants you as its wielder). With the exception of Nightwalker, none of these weapons can be obtained on the physical realm.
  • #83

I see.
It seems you're doing something different than what I initially thought.

<Spoiler for excessive references to own works and irrelevance>
Spoiler

The concept of a daemon indeed sounds very interesting, especially if these weapons themselves are daemons. They don't, then, consist of normal matter but only appear to, right? Or are they of metal imbued with the soul or power of such an entity?
  • #84

All Daemon blades except Daivos can be considered metallic, though they are basically "living" metal. But no, they wouldn't be normal matter, though they feel and to lesser degrees act like it. Nightwalker is that red handclaw on Steven's hand, it's original form was a axe/scythe combo that he shopped to better fit his needs, but again Nightwalker's status as a Daemon blade is intended to be in question in-Universe (at several points, it is implied to be made by human hands, though human-made daemons are not unheard of).

Daivos, however, is a mindfuck. It exists as a black liquid exhibiting all the properties of blood. When taken by a wielder it likes, it replaces his blood. The user can solidify the weapon at will once it is outside the body. Combat tentacles, knives on command, drops of blood becoming spikes that skewer the opponent--you name it, it's possible. The more blood is lost, the more dangerous the wielder becomes. Overuse of the weapon causes the wielder's psyche to change somewhat, diminishing his/her ability to feel empathy and increases their natural "sadistic" qualities. The effect is not permanent and slowly diminishes with the weapon's use.

Though this is its default form, its true form is a giant black weapon resembling a void in space. Though solid, its true form is just as capable of changing shape as its default form, more so in fact. It is also considerably more dangerous.

Surprise: first chapter of The Revelation, an official Deathscape serial novel, is now on my Deviant Art page! This will mark the beginning of the Deathscape story proper, as it is based off the original novel I wrote several years ago.

Warning: If you are disturbed by this chapter.... then you probably aren't going to like later ones.

Carc, I just noticed. You don't seem to like drawing anything that doesn't resemble a shamshir. If you're gonna be drawing swords and shit, you should think about branching out and trying different styles.

The grip is near the top.

Considering Daivos replaces the user's blood, it shouldn't be surprising that it's a double-edged swords (cuts the user as well). At least, I think so.
Edit: Damn it, I drew the grip wrong. Give me a minute and I'll upload an older, better pic.

Part III of the Daemon Blade Series: Thanatos

Spoiler

Basically a (guardless) Estoc attached to a chain, attached to a wrist cuff, attached to another chain and wrist cuff, attached to a bizarre looking sickle. Once attached to a wielder, it cannot be removed. Its power is Death--it can kill with the most superficial injury, such as breaking a single layer of skin or cutting a strand of hair.
Edit: colored. Chose green tones because it has always been that way in my mind. Seems kind of fitting on a Jungian level.

A major revision of the first chapter of my serial novel, The Revelation, is out. What was written is still there, but a LOT more has been added to complete the chapter. It does give (somewhat) of an explanation for what Fiona is, along with more interaction with her father, Dr. Devon Carter.

The Revelation - Chapter One - Nightmare

Edit: This story will be VERY NSFW, not in the graphic porno nature but in the OMG THAT'S HORRIBLE nature. Browse around my DA page as well, you will find a few things on there relevant to the story.

Please don't get onto me about it not looking 3D, I haven't started shading yet. All other criticisms very much welcome.[/s] Shaded. Criticism still welcome!

Here we have the very first OC I ever created--waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in the early nineties. His name right now is Dr. Devon "Batcat" Carter. A bit of an explanation behind that enigma of a name: every single Hybrid I have ever created is based on a pet I owned. When I first came up with these characters (mostly the Roderigo, Fiona, "Princess" and Batcat group), it was intended to be a comedy series and NOT anthropomorphic. The transition from shitty comedy to horror left me with 3 characters that could actually defend themselves and a million others that had to be protected. After experimenting with ways to make them able to fight back, anthropomorphism was the only rational option (in contrast, the Cevals in Fallen started out anthro, but the original purpose was basically "Cats with Guns").

After anthropomorphizing the characters, the kittycat names didn't fit. Batcat became a nickname (used only by Roderigo) and his name became Devon. Princess became Samantha. Fiona stayed the same, because she had a rational name (as did my other soon to be revealed character, Pepper, as it's a fairly common girl's name).

Edit: See page three for the newest revision!
