Abbey discuss him

The Paulo article was starting to turn into an Abbey debate, please, if were going to continue talking about him let's do it on his /own/ topic.

Talk about Abbey however you want, do you like him? Don't you? Yeah, self explanatory pretty much.

Abbey is my favourite character. I think he's nice and only wants to do good. His personality is relatable to mine, even though I didn't watch my mom die. My personality isn't that extreme (talking about irl by the way). I also love the AbbeyxDaisy pairing, I think it's working great and they look cute together. I also find his relationship with Paulo amusing. Lastly, he's so cute! Just look at him:

I made it mainly so that when Jerk would come to reply to me he'd do it here instead of on the Paulo forum. If I were to say anything at the start I'd just be repeating myself.

Sometimes it's fun just trow an idea out. Abbey is quite the complex character what with his past of an abusive father as well as the emotional issues stemming from that. Abbey is a good character but he hasn't really gotten much face time as of late. It seems he suffers the curse of a stable relationship, no drama at all...

Yeah dude you should probably give your OWN opinion to start things off.

I will paste my opinion from a topic in the old forums:

I will admit for a time I wasn’t fond of Abbey, like when he was created because I struggled to.. make dialogue for him. He’s meant to use fancy words and in the past it was so freaken FORCED. I ended up abandoning that character trait and now he’s just a Michael who explodes once in a while. That is mildly irritating since we don't need another Michael. Michael is kind of boring in essence.

The thing that all the other characters have that Abbey doesn’t is YEARS OF DEVELOPMENT. Lucy evolved and changed over the span of most of my life, so her personality comes naturally. I still have yet to figure out Abbey’s flow, the flow I feel with everyone else. Abbey has always been my challenge.

And oh my god his character design in the past

freaken HATED IT

he looked so ugly. I feel I redesigned him to be something I like now, so that’s an old peeve. That was my fault, I got impatient during the designing stages of Abbey and just thought "screw it I've drawn characters out of thin air before, and I can do it again" so after much irritation I threw him onto "Humble Approach"

This is why planning ahead and careful planning is recommended, so you don't make mistakes like this.

And his white knighting annoyed me for a time especially since my ex friend absolutely HATED Abbey. So that influenced me.

I seem to like him more now, he just needs to develop. Admittedly, he’s a plot device. So I need to get him out of that problem and make him.. him!

I really don't see them breaking up (nor do I want them to)...not in the near future at least...Taeshi needs at least one successful couple that doesn't include a love triangle dodecahedron.

No, but honestly, I think he is; as well as a good character in his own right, of course. He has issues, issues that are somehow radically different from what other people in the comic have - that makes him unique and interesting. And when he made the Daisy SwitchTM, I got even more respect for him. ^_^

Personally, I like Abbey as a character. He's just Mike but more explosive, as Closet said. And he and Daisy are totally OTP <3

There are two ways to deal with watching your dad beat your mother to death in front of you.(maybe a few more) You can see it happen and look away and harden yourself to such events while at the same time bringing yourself closer to being just like the people who create these situations in the first place or you can stare it in the face. You can see the darkness and find it's nature and simply avoid the behavior that leads to it. Abbey is in need of therapy because he not only avoids acting like his father, he strives to be the polar opposite of him and demonises every little attribute of his father. In the actual commic abbey is quickly mentaly crushed by being compaired to his dad.

That's the abbey people will attack.
At the moment, it looks like he has become a good but normal guy with a good relationship. The interesting abbey who people didn't like and who I'm examening was the violant white kniting rabbit(thing) with the deep mental scars that controlled him and no official attachment to daisy.

You are correct ILB, she's not dead, or at least I'm pretty sure it's been implied that she's not.

On the subject of Abbey, I think he's a real stand up guy who does his best to help. Maybe I like him because everyday when I'm at school and I see people acting like complete assholes or doing something wrong or stupid, I don' say anything about it or call them on it. I just keep walking. But Abbey, Abbey isn't afraid of doing that. He does the right thing without fear that he would receive hatred or ridicule. That's pretty damn commendable if you ask me.

When it comes down to his traumatic childhood, I think that he's handling it better than most people would. It's nearly impossible to go through an experience like that unscathed and Abbey is doing his best to make up for his terrible father. Hence all the white knighting. All though fits of rage are prone as best seen in his confrontation with Micheal. This just shows that he is human like the rest of us, and not some holy paragon of humanity.

The main focus I'm getting at is that I like Abbey because he has a strong sense of morality, he is a regular guy trying to move on in his life, and I know I didn't mention this and I know a lot of people will disagree with me, but I really like how Abbey looks. I like his ears, his fur color, and his fur pattern. He just looks freaking cool to me.

Why is there a focus on how abbey looks?
Oh, I guess she lived but my point still stands about how he demonises everything about his father and strives with every fiber of his being to escape it.
His flaws are that he uses violance to rescue freinds, he can't withstand wery mush bad behavior in the people around him before he gets very mad, and stalked daisy that one time.
Then again, it seems like half the charactures stalk people.

He really does not, though. His reactions to Paulo are - most of the time - entirely understandable, and that is honestly the only occasions I have seen him irrationally angry.

That contradicts itself, I know. Most things do. ^_^

I'm actually kind of torn on my opinion of Abbey.
Part of me admires his chivalry and his morals/ethics/general kindness/etc. It isn't something most of the characters have.
The fact that he goes into "rage-mode" sometimes is interesting as well. I think overall he's a decent character.
But on the other hand a lot of the above also rubs me the wrong way. Sometimes I feel it's too forced from him or he needs to tone down the white knight in him. Like he's trying to hard? Plus I feel he can be too judgmental and harsh on the other characters, especially Paulo, just because what they did doesn't agree with HIM. I waver on thinking Abbey is okay to plain just not liking him.

White kniting is a prosses by which a person (abbey) finaly desides that all the wrongs in the world will only be solved if he goes out and stops them and that it is just as much his place as anyone elses.
The reason why this is wrong it because there is no way to make other people act in a "good" way and "good" is subjective.
So all the "good" which he is tring to do gets redused to forcing others to behave like he wants them to.
Also, his idea of good is defined in a manner that is based on avoiding his father rather than logic.

This is why people dislike him.

No, that is untrue. He resorted to violence against Augustus, that much is true; that is the only time he has done so. The incident with Michael does not really count, in my opinion - he was annoyed at him for what he said, and I know people who could easily get (not overly) violent with others for that reason. This does not mean that their father beat their mother, or that they have issues.

Now, his actions in relation to Daisy saved her from a potentially unhealthy relationship. Also granted, it was not violence that made her turn away from Augustus. But Abraham reacted and Augustus was at fault, something that is undeniable.

He has really only acted violently against one person whose demeanour he deems to be bad. He accepts Paulo, and has never as much as raised his fists to him, despite the fact that he dislikes him - a dislike which is entirely understandable. He has not assaulted David, although he really could use a knock or two to the head. ^_^

His moral fibre does not make him resentable. Or at the very least it should not, because he is among the few characters that has come to full grips with his own problems, and taken up action against them.

I'm on the fence about Abbey.

On one hand I genuinely like him because of his nice-guy demeanor, and on the other he really needs to stop acting like he has the moral high ground in every argument.

I think that for Abbey to have a characterization more than "second Mike," white knight, and Daisy's love interest, he's going to need to deal with his issues (preferably onscreen).

Abbey isn't exactly a Mary Sue, in that he's not taking the focus of the comic away from others. But yes, he is a Mary Sue in that he lacks the character development and complexity of the rest of the main cast.

Well, he was introduced late on when compared to many others. But he has an immense complexity in his past - although it has not been expounded too much upon apart from those two chapters where it was in focus. ^_^
