That's my point. He has the background to be an immensely interesting character. It just hasn't been expounded upon, like you said, for two reasons:
1. He was introduced later than the others and hasn't had as much time to establish his depth
2. As Taeshi said, she struggled writing his character for a long time because he didn't "flow"
Abbey discuss him

Mhm. Well, hopefully he will be more properly developed later on, because his background allows for a lot of it. I do hope he will not be... Well, dramatised so much that his change into a "second Daisy" was very entertaining and enjoyable, in my own opinion. ^_^

Abbey isn't exactly a Mary Sue, in that he's not taking the focus of the comic away from others. But yes, he is a Mary Sue in that he lacks the character development and complexity of the rest of the main cast.
How much childhood abuse does it take to graduate from Mary Sue?

Abbey is my second favorite character, with Lily just surpassing him in first. He reminds me of me as in standing with his own morals and sticks by them, even if it gets you in deep shit stuff.

What we've seen of Abbey has, in my opinion, been done very well. I'd really like to see him work past his problems and develop more as a character. Personally, I sympathize with his problems, but I have a lot of trouble accepting how superior he acts. Dealing with issues like that requires constant work, and his tendency to judge other people's mistakes comes across to me as a way of avoiding his own problems. But we haven't seen enough of him following the vacation arc to determine if he's moved past this (after all, talking the way he does may be unrelated to his problems). At the same time, we can't force ourselves to think a few therapy sessions will change him--it will take years, and in the scope of the comic, it hasn't been that long.

There are people who allow themselves to feel (or rather, get caught up in) the emotional charge in the air. Some that don't, or sometimes even can't. Abbey is definitely the former, but I think part of his problem lies in that he allows himself to let it all in too much, to the point where it really seems to absolutely kill him inside to not be able to help someone dealing with a personal problem, especially if they're his friend. Then again, I think this might just be a compensation in trying to avoid his father's legacy. Poppa was a villain so [insert deity here] damm it I gotta be a hero. Sorry buddy, but things just aren't so black and white.
But I have to admit, I really love this character. I just find him one of the more interesting people in the comic. There's this dark and mysterious past probably stained with the blood most likely shed by his father. And mystery is just always so attractive. (That's why I think it's better Tae left that story untold. We already made it the most horrible thing ever in our heads; seeing it would ruin that because so many people would be let down. And let's face it, things are always scarier with a hint of mystery. What's really scarier, a dude running at you with a knife, or a dude running at you with a knife wearing burlap sac on his head so you can't see his face?) And worse yet, instead of letting the tragedy pass with time as all things do, he vigerously tried to shove it away. And the further he pushed, the further he himself was pushed to the mirror's edge of sanity, where he oh so unfotunately had to face himself. And then he broke. I mean, obviously, because cats aren't supposed to leak from the face like that at the mention of their father, right?
But that's the thing, battle scars are very alluring, and his is my absolute favorite kind of drama: the oh so freaking delicious flavor of having to do with being messed up. Something messed up happened to him, now he's sort of a little messed up because of it. Just look at that outrageous anger problem.
Mm, tasty.

just a little food for thought. if you go to the link in his description saying that he is an Abyssinian if you read a little bit from Wikipedia (especially the temperament section, second paragraph) gives you an idea where his name might have come from.

Yeah Abbey is great and is definitely my favourite character, the only problem I have with him is his anger issues, sure if was partly justified to beat up the guy assulting Tess and to hit Augustus but some of his other actions have been a bit too extreme.
Posted this on another thread, thought I would bring it here.
Abbey beat the crap out of this guy, completely uncalled for
The guy shown bullying here http://www.bitterswe...com/c38/p5.html
and shown beaten here http://www.bitterswe...om/c38/p13.html
No one seemed to mention this guy so I though I should, this beating was in no way justifiable. If this is anything to go by I would think that, when he was mad at Mike, had Mike not faught back then Abbey would have ended up doing a lot more then just pushing and shoving.
Either way Abbey is mixed up but still the best character

Abbey seems to have a clear understanding, to his mind, as to right and wrong. Which means that it's hard to understand just why others don't have that same viewpoint. And so it causes him to get angry when someone argues with something he thinks is completely right. He needs to learn to accept other viewpoints.

It might not mean anything but Taeshi can just be that subtle sometimes. You should see if the profiles of any of the other character races dish out juicy psychological profiles.
I wonder if Abbey will take the credit for campaigning for Daisy...Hm.

I hope not...but I am more curious as to who is president. I didn't like Abbey for awhile but I think he is starting to grow on me a bit...who knows with a bit more therapy he could probably be a decent leader
