Ok, so since i couldn't find any topic on here to do with anime or magna, i decided to make my own.
I am an anime guru but have never really like magna that much. Feel free to ask me questions for anime or talk to yourselves about anything anime related.

I also claim no ownership of any anime or magna i talk about.

Hope you like this topic

Manga.

Get it right.

And Otaku has bad connotations to it, btw. Best not use the term lightly.
Otaku on Wikipedia

Oh, and welcome to the new boards. Don't worry, I'm not usually this tense.

I Like 'em both... because Anime and manga of a same series ends up so different... :/
  • #3

Hahahaha. I can tell you are like 13 from this post, but yeah.

I enjoy anime that isn't full of fucking filler. I'd rather my anime be 26 episodes and thought provoking, rather than be 300 episodes long and feature a Gary Stu. (And I really like SciFi shit)

Ghost in the Shell, Escaflowne, Eureka 7, and others.

I also don't characterize myself as an otaku, I think identifying yourself by the kind of tv shows you watch is stupid. And at that, anime isn't really one of my major hobbies.
  • #4

@Mr.Claus oh... right, sorry... shows how bad i am at manga
oh... sorry i just hera otaku alot in anime conversations

@CaptainBaconMan good guess... i am indeed 13
true but you don't need to answer the poll and i'll take it down if it offends anyone... but there are people out there who define themselves by their hobbies

'Otaku' means 'Fan' by the way in japanese

I'm sorry, can you edit this out....? That statement really bothers me especially when it comes from someone who doesn't really understand what "otaku" really means in the japanese sense. Many don't know of the Tsutomu Miyazaki murders as well as the odd series of axe murders by "otaku" that aired near the end of School Days and beginning of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - Kai that created the "nice boat" meme...

That isn't to say I don't enjoy anime, but I cringe when I see or hear otaku used so lightly especially for something as little as "fan." You might be too young for it but the first half of "Ore no Imouto wa Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai" would be a good depiction of what otaku is along with the societal views of it (aside from the humor).

As for a Top 5 for me: Black Lagoon, Spice and Wolf, Full Metal Panic!, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, and R.O.D the OVA and TV series.

I'm not offended, and I don't think anyone else is either. And it's simply my opinion that it's dumb to do that. I don't have any concrete evidence. I came to that conclusion using abstract logic, which doesn't hold sway in anything that matters. So countine defining yourself an otaku if that's what you want, but just remember that people are going to judge you based on this simply because they can.

But I digress, I guessed you were young because your post is full of stuff that you really had no need to write. Like, I'm pretty sure nobody is going to assume that you're claiming ownership of any anime or manga unless you explicity said that.

Also @ Zerreth, the word Otaku is used that lightly in Japan, so why can't we? Also, he was probably just abbreviating the definition. And while 'Fan' certainly desn't relay the same conotations as Otaku does, it's pretty close. I guess a more acurate interpretation would be 'Geek' or 'Nerd'. Also the word carries slightly different meanings when used in either America or Japan.

@Apoc i did not make this topic so it could become the number one replied topic, i put it up so if people wanted to they could reply or just talk to someone... i find it very hard to find a person who even understands the word anime so i wanted to see if there is other people who like or at least know the meaning of anime
  • #14

I like nice, relaxed Slice of Life things. Yes, criticize me :/ Things like Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Minami-ke Sisters, that kinda thing. I watch it just to relax, no fanboyism present or anything. I also like Elfin Lied, because it's short, concise, romancy, thought-provoking and rather nice in its gruesome and somewhat repulsive way.
  • #15

Welcome to the internet Awesomesauce.

@Sammy, I don't mind Slice of Life animes either, they just have to have an interesting catch to them. Most of them are just the same damn show though.

  • #17

Yeah, that's why i like MoHS, as it also features time-travellers, Espers, a superintelligent computer, and a girl who can wish anything into (or out of) existance. And Minami-ke because it's funny and reminds me so inexplicably of my family :smirk:

Apoc, go and be stupid and cretinous somewhere else if you have nothing useful to say.

I... like both, to a point. But manga is sometimes too violent and gory for my tastes.

Studio Ghibli is wonderful, though. ^_^
  • #25

That's just who Apoc is. Ignore him as you would a troublesome two-year-old. Once in a very long while he has something important to say. Otherwise...
  • #26

I like anime and manga mostly cause it was such a large part of my childhood but I really fell out of it in the past year or so. I still watch it and read it when I remember to but I'm not an animu fag any more.

To be honest, I was more addicted to manga than anime. I liked the art and pacing and for me it's easier to take it all in than watching it, plus it's usually closer to the writer's original idea than anime is. But after manga fox when down and the creators started getting made at the internet for spreading the scans I really lost interest in it all together.

I still like it, and it will always be a part of me but I'm just into different things now. But top five manga?

1. O-parts Hunter
2. FMA
3.+Anima
4.Case Closed
5.Defense Devil

I will read these series till the sun goes down.
  • #27

Sometimes I think seeing the ending to Berserk, in my lifetime, is one of the reasons that drives me to keep healthy. I think it's probably one of the greatest epics ever written, much less committed to art.

MY LIST OF FAVOURITE ANIME/MANGA:
Ouran high school host club
The melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Mahou sensei Negima
Bleach
Naruto
Pokemon (only the early ones though)
Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou
Armed Librarians: The book of Banntora
Soul Eater
Dragonball
Lucky Star
Love Hina
Death Note
Asu no Yoichi!

There's more, but this is all I could name off the top of my head ^_^
Also, FIX THE OP. IT'S MANGA NOT MAGNA.

I rather read manga than the corresponding anime, if I'm presented the option.

Otaku has a very bad connotation in Japanese, but here on western lands 'otaku' doesn't have that bad of a meaning.
Just as bad as being hardcore fan of any other thing.

EDIT:
Magna is fun ^_^
Reminded me of Baten Kaitos

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

Hajime no Ippo is the best Anime/Manga ever created in the history of anime and manga! (in my opinion)

The story is awesome, the balance between the dramatic fighting normaly found in animes and the realism in the sport is perfect, the character design is flawless.

Read/watch it, enjoy it, become a fan of it, or babies will cry...

Apoc, just because you don't like this doesn't mean that other people don't. I know your IQ is under 80, and that you have never talked to another human in your life, but you could at least make the effort to be vaguely tolerable.

@ILB Studio Ghibli is indeed genius. I adored Spirited Away when I was about 15.

Ah, yes, it is a rather fantastic piece of animation.
  • #42

Note well his tag, 'Special Ed.'

Back on topic, the only anime I've seen is Dragon Ball Z and similiar stuff, and Spirited Away. This leads me to conclude that some anime is good, other anime is ok-ish, and some sucks.

Just like any other medium.

DBZ is shit. Don't bother with it, especially not the dub *shudder*. Stick with properly animated stuff :smirk:

At least Goku doesn't sound like a five year old in the english version.
  • #45

DBZ wasn't so bad. Hell, the Vegeta arc alone practically made the whole series worth the colossal escalation fest it turned into from that point on. I'd say the super saiyan arc itself was pretty great until everyone and their dog could do it.

The onlything I know truly about Anime, is the 4 kids ruins it.
  • #47

Let's see, anime wot I like:

Digimon's first two series (simply for nostalgia, though they were surprisingly good)
EVA (Yeah yeah everyone watches it, but it's better than Eureka 7 :P)
Gundam 00 - The only Gundam series ever to not be shit.
Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Eden of the East

I think Eden of the East is probably the one that jumps out the most at the moment, to me. It's new, it's well animated, it'd HD (nomnom), and the plot is very well done...
  • #48

EVA is a bunch of bosnian kids with robots cutting themselves to JRock. Atleast Eureka 7 was fun to watch along with having bosnian kids "Baaaaaawing" constantly.
  • #49

Ghost in the Shell (movie, Subbed is best here) and GitS: Stand Alone Complex (either or)
Bleach when it's not in Filler Hell
Cowboy Bebop
Shiki (no dub yet, will check it out again when the dub hits)
Slayers (better subbed, dub is idiotic at best)
Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (second one's best)
And my favorite of all time, Naoki Urasawa's Monster.

To be seen:
Elfin Lied
Highschool of the Dead
