I've given myself my own little thing I live to.

I do not believe in God, though I shall live myself towards goodwill and the good of others.
If when I would die, I have gone to hell I will know there is not a God worth believing in.

He was speaking in future-tense.

"You fill me full of danger, you give me future shock
Then you leave me wasted, dying"
She is a River - Simple Minds

mmmk, new focus.
The brain is a collection of neurons send electrochemical impulses to each other. They react is a manner comparable to a Rube-Goldberg machine, or maybe a row of dominoes. This mechanism is escalated to a scale so complex that it eventually emulates higher thought, e.g. Your consciousness (individual neutrons have no intelligence). Your consciousness isn't a magical concept, no. Your attitudes, memories, emotions, etc are just a finely constructed set of neurons reacting in the special way that personalises you.
So now that we can determine that the human psyche is a physical thing, How can we say our 'essence' goes to heaven if it is all physical? What determines the confines of our body? Do we include what we ate for breakfast that morning?

It is not completely 100% understood how the brain functions, there is plenty of room for doubt and other theories such as the soul.

I'm pretty indifferent when it comes to such a trivial topic like religion. I believe in a Heaven and Hell, I believe there is a God, but nothing else.

I just utterly despise when someone tries to force a religion down my throat, it's not very flattering. I used to have a friend who was extremely religious, and all she would talk about was how badly she had sinned, how badly I had sinned, how she just HAD to repent and she treated God like an obsession.

I believe that God wants you to be happy, and will love you no matter what decisions you make in life. My friend was stopping her dreams, stopping what she wanted to do as a career, in life, all for the fact that God came first, and she was treating everything else like an obsession. God came before herself.

And, that just does not seem very bright. You don't need religion to become a great person, you don't need to go to church to go to Heaven, you can be who you want to be and STILL worship the Lord. I tried to tell her this but she would never agree with my points. It was always God first.

It just seems...off.

They told me in school today that Homosexuality was originated, from someone who was born with "sin".
Therefore Homosexuality is a sin.
I CALL FAKE AND GAY!
When they say "God" loves all people on earth, but they say being homo is sinning and they are "evil"!

What I think of their teachings:
FAKE AND GAY!

In my humble opinion, religion and creed is personal, everyone has their own.

Everyone needs something to believe in.

Don't let that something force you to obey others blindly.

If you don't like something, come with a good reason. Don't blame "God". I believe there is a God. I don't think you could be gay if He was against it to begin with. But I do believe he has all of Eternity to toss make you pay for blaming him for your crap.

Ok. Enough serious business.

Also, I believe everyone is born with a reason: To Kick Ass.
Those who fail to Kick Ass must repent getting theis asses kicked.

...I could start a church with this crap.

Here's a summary of Nietzsche's "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" that I didn't write. I got it here.

Your humanity is conditional, and if that makes you uncomfortable, you're doing it wrong. Maybe you didn't hear, but God is dead. And good. fucking. riddance. Except, for some reason, people won't let him go and it's going to destroy humanity. Everything you've ever thought was right or wrong, you thought because someone told you. And they only told you because someone told them. But how the hell could they possibly know better than you? Who the fuck put them in charge? The Great Big Dead Guy in the sky? Fuck that. Let them waste their lives trying to please others who exist and Others who don't.

Seriously. We have limitless potential, and we're wasting it worrying about sin and Hell and Heaven. And maybe you don't actually believe in any of that. You think that makes you better than anyone else? Wrong answer, asshole. It makes you worse.

At least believers can tell you exactly why they're pissing their lives away; see for yourself. Ask one. "Why do you hate sex, joy, and the human spirit?" "Oh. Because I believe in a non-physical deity who told me that if I hated them, I'd spend the rest of eternity in paradise." It's batshit crazy, right? But at least he's sticking to his guns. Agree to disagree, whatever. But if you don't believe that bullshit, then why the hell are you sitting around wondering what's left? It's because you DO believe that bullshit, you're just too scared to admit it. Fuck, bro, you almost made it out - you saw through the lies and said, "Nope, fuck that." But then you fell into the same old pattern of worrying about right and wrong, about patriotism and politics, about tolerance and government and fairness, about all measure of bullshit - all you've done is replaced the bullshit you know with the bullshit you don't.

I'm not saying nothing matters, and fuck people who think that. What matters? YOU matter. Want to know the secret to being happy? It's easy. I'll tell you. Just do what makes you happy. Oh, shit, look at how easy that is! It's like magic! TA-DA, BITCHES! Stop letting anyone tell you what 'happiness' is, or what should make you happy, or why you should be guilty for being happy. You know what happiness is. You know how to experience joy, or you would if you just let go of how everyone else has told you how to be.

Humanity isn't an end, it's a fork in the road, and you have two options: "Animal" and "Superman". For some reason, people keep going left, the easy way, the way back to where we came from. Fuck 'em. Other people just stand there, staring at the signposts, as if they're going to come alive and tell them what to do or something. Dude, the sign says fucking "SUPERMAN". How much more of a clue do these assholes want? How does that not sound awesome? But they're paralyzed by their fear - "But, that road looks hard to walk." It IS hard, dipshit, but that's what makes it worth it! Fuck.

Look, bro, time goes on forever; everything that can happen is going to happen, and then it's going to happen again. Are you okay with that? Can you stomach the thought of living your life again and again, with no regrets? Not just stomach it; does that thought make you happy? If it doesn't, then you've got some work to do. Here are some good places to start: Dance more often. Laugh at EVERYTHING. And above all else, Thyne own will be done, not anyone else's. Anyone who tells you it's not fair or it's not right or that you should do anything you don't want to is lying to you, and I promise you they're miserable and mediocre. Be done with that. It's not that you only get one life - if only it were that simple. You get more lives than you can imagine, but only one. fucking. chance. to define them for eternity. Stop wasting it. Go and live, now and forever!

The reason why there are so many religious people is because well: God is the physical manifestation of peoples hope.

Lets say your sister is dying of cancer. All you can generally say is "OH PLEESE OH PLEESE OH PLEESE!". Eventually people started creating deities for that last curmudgeon of hope. For that extra inkling that your sister will survive. Eventually it started evolving into something more.

Maybe god planned for your sister to die. so she could be happy in heaven. Because otherwise its simply a random chance. And randomness terrifies people.

Lets say somebody mugged your grandmother and stole all her money (10,000$). By all likelihood that guy is now enjoying a nice vacation. Your grandmother will not recognize him again and he will go unpunished for this heinous act. Hell, gives the assurance that justice always comes. Sooner, or later.

Many dark times have been controlled by those that claimed to control hope (Kings, The Pope). Some even disproved god to thier people and made themselfs thier idol (Stalin).

For those that can cope without the above, good for you.
  • #719

The Pope had his own personal army, King Henry VIII started his own sect of Christianity just to get a divorce (is that right? I'm hazy on this one), &c.

People knock on Christianity for the crusades and everything, which were stupid, but they certainly had motivation to counter the movements of expansionist Islam. They proceeded to fuck up Southern Europe for centuries, no? I know Spain had to throw them out and I know Austria had to counter the Turks.

Anyway, the point is that you're right: the concept of God isn't always about fear of Hell. Sometimes it's the belief that some sort of justice exists removed from the consequences that we actually see. Generally speaking, it's comforting, and it's mostly just a tool for placation (in the absence of justice), motivation (the crusades) or demagoguery (Cunt Queen Michele Bachmann the First).

He did, although another reason was that he needed the money of the Church and got it all by making himself the head of it.

And really, at least they're not under the rule of the pope. I don't hate the men but their thoughs tend to be... In disagreement with mine, largely.
  • #721

Didn't they finally absolve Galileo in, like, 1962? Four hundred more years and they'll support abortion and gay marriage.

Generaly those that control hope control allot.

The pope said: I control hope. If you wish for you to die happy then listen to me.

So Did the King.

Staling said: If you could only be as amazing as me. I give you all hope that life can be great if you just believe in me. Also 100% control over the govournment is nice too.

Meh, I believe that there is a superior being of intelligent design, however I do not support organized religion. If you look back into history books, religion is a huge contributor to wars that occur. "Oh you do not believe in our god therefore you are heathens and do not deserve to live. . ." -.- The roman's were a big contributor to this, as well as the christian religion if you look back on the crusades, and Muslims are just as equal to blame for wars in the name of religion just as anyone else.

Like I said. Those wars where people seizing hope and using them to accomplish thier own ends.

I see what you did there, nice idea, poor execution :P

All I was saying was that there is not enough understanding to disprove the existence of the soul like you were claiming.
  • #727

Yah, I got what you were saying. Wasn't trying to disprove the soul, but rather define it. I did include my own exceptions, and it is totally plausible that there are souls.
I just dunno what they encompass.
  • #728

To describe what the soul is is to describe colour to the colorblind.

I dislike this saying. I worked at the Institute of the Blind in Thailand on several occasions and I've had to help teach concepts like colors to children who never have nor ever will see them.

Just because we can't see something doesn't make us too stupid to understand what they are. Likewise, just because we can't hold a soul in our hand doesn't mean we can't observe and describe it, if it exists.

Also, the sciences rely a great deal on understanding and describing things we can't see. Electrons come to mind...

team logic, bitches!

(not trying to be an ass, I just don't feel like giving a huge explanation as to why i'm atheist)
  • #735

Not very simple, telling family that you've converted.
Especially is their all hard core.
Like pouring you with holy water, and placing crosses on you when you say you're an atheist.
  • #736

Team logic, faggots.

(Not trying to be an ass, I just don't care what you believe except that it's stupid and you should probably be an atheist unless you need some kind of enormous hope-crutch like spirituality to keep you from sucking off a gun barrel.)
  • #737

Um, thought I'd mosey by this thread~!
I'm a proud LaVeyan Satanist with Theistic principles c;

So I don't believe in all that mythical God, Satan and Creationism stuff. [Actually I'd never believe in Creationism anyway, prolly because I accept scienctific facts.]
But if they were real, I would choose to be a follower of Satan himself.
But right now, I'm LaVeyan, so I am here, worshipping myself.
I like to be called an Athiest more than a Satanist in normal conversation, seeing as LaVeyan Satanism is basically a religion for Agnostics who... Want something to be called. And want to be part of a religion that is as non-believing as Athiesm.
So I'm chill.
I'm as chill as ice-cream.

So:

"Not to be a jerk but believe what I believe because the other side of an Unprovable / Undisproveable argument is dumb"

So are you religious or not?

But again you called yourself jerk so you may be trolling.
  • #739

I was raised Catholic, but my parents never really told me much about what Catholics believed. For many years, I knew nothing about religion and the message had sunk into my brain that it simply didn't matter why we were on this Earth. Which is why when I was 12, I decided I cared so little about religion that I must be an agnostic, but i realised then that now matter how much I thought I was agnostic or catholic or whatever, I couldn't seem to stop believing in the big bang theory. It just made waaaaaay more sense than anything else.

I think one quote from when you die in Call Of Duty is "There are no atheists in war." Which I like.

I think its actually "atheists in foxholes"

As for the whole can't prove/disprove approach: absence of evidence is evidence of absence

Your telling me to kill myself?

Wow you are a jerk.

Again its an unprovable concept. Just relax dont call other people names yet insist your the more intelligent one and live life to the fullest.

Not necessarily. If He exists maybe He just doesn't love you.
