Now we see Tess' motive for spreading lies about Jessica: she wanted to get back at Jess for trying to do something about her boyfriend Roger. So she humiliated Jess and then slammed her head into a locker, which seems pretty typical of her bullying behaviour back then (judging by what she and Roger did to Aaron). Of course, when Tess realized that Roger was just using her and decided to change her life around, she then had to accept that people would always hold grudges against her for what she'd done to them in the past.

Doesn't explain Jessica continuing to play up her new slutty image, though. Or maybe Jess just decided the easiest path was to go along with it and grab some booty while she was at it? Of course, in that sense, Jessica might just be using boys (Paulo included) in much the same way Roger did with girls (Tess included).

You know, in an earlier comic the cast were talking about hearing that you can fit a whole person in the lockers. They couldn't have heard this unless someone did get stuffed into a locker before.

Huh. I never even considered that possibility, but now that you mention it... Or perhaps that would be rather contrary to the purpose. Being stuffed in a locker is a staple for nerds and geeks, not people who act promiscuously (or are believed to do so). If anybody was stuck in there by Tess and her associates, I would believe it to be somebody else.

I don't really have sympathy for Jessica. Tess didn't "make her into a whore," she just spread the rumor and then Jessica fell into that role. She did something horribly stupid, and she paid for it. I still can't see Tess as any kind of villain. A bitch, yeah, but honestly? Jessica had it coming for trying to get shit on Roger in the first place when she could've just left the damn thing alone. Moron.

I don't disagree that Jessica went about this the wrong way, but I think some sympathy comes from her motives: she was trying to do something for her friends Rachel and Aaron (who both were impacted by Roger).

As for Tess, she didn't have to get revenge for her boyfriend, but she chose to. Tess was vindictive in those days, and now she regrets it. Her lies and rumor-spreading were the things that initially caused Jessica to be seen as a slut. Though I agree it's not entirely Tess' fault if Jessica later chose to fall into that slutty role. Personal decisions have to count for something, after all.

The date rape was Tess's freshman year, right? I mean, if it wasn't, I'd say getting raped by Roger was what made her realize what she had been doing was wrong, which would cause her to become the person we see when she is introduced. Of course this can't work if Tess really was raped freshman year, as she is a sophomore now.

Gawd, either way, I feel so sorry for her. Getting drugged and rape couldn't have been fun, to say the least.

If that's even the real story smash, it was never confirmed to be more than just an overhyped rumor. I doubt it would have been by Roger if it actually did happen anyways.

Tess did first have sex with Roger in her freshman year. However, Roger wasn't the only guy she dated. She also went to a dance with a senior, which is when she was drugged (see here). That doesn't mention anything about rape though, so we can't necessarily assume that's what happened.

This chapter is being quite interesting as long we are learning about Jessica and Tess's early high school days, even is not the prettiest ones.
Anyway, my exact thoughts about this: I agree with almost everything said here: Jessica is not particularly slutty because of Tess, but probably is still missing us something. I mean, we don't see yet what made her to become like that. Living in the rumors and becoming a real slut? Maybe yes, maybe not, hum.
Tess made a dick move to make Jessica to regret even more for her approach of the dog boy in order to gain access to information that would give a chance to take Roger down somehow. Obviously that revealed to be too risky, but we know that Jessica did that for Rachel's sake. She might be a slut, but is not a bitch.

I somehow compare Jessica with Augustus: they both got their nasty moves but something is hiding under their feet that is preventing us to see why they are like that. For now. Since we are seeing now part of it thanks to the current canon chapter and the incentive comic. Very briefly but is giving us an idea. They are both minor characters but thanks to the big impact that they are doing to the series, is just a question of time until we fully be able to understand them.

Well, now let's see how this "party" is gonna over, lol

This page makes me wish I could be there for Jess too, so she could have... well, more than just one friend who ignores the rumors.

I guess it's possible too that Rachael has already .. done stuff by now .. so she just doesn't care if any of the rumors are true.

Rachel has actually heard the rumors about Jess, she is just hanging out with her because she wants to turn into a total whore and is probably the reason Tess turns into one as well. That, and she is hoping to get between Jess's legs...why else would she have hinted that Jess is Bisexual? Something must have happened in the past for her to hint at this

Ah-hum. That has to do with her feelings for Lucy, as evidenced by the relationship chart and her demeanour in Rehearsal, as well as hinted at earlier in Pillow Talk. ^_^

Yes, but Rachel wasn't there during Rehearsals was she? And she couldn't have seen the relationship chart, so there must have been something else which made her even think to hint at Jess's possible bisexuality. Something fishy going on here

The relationship chart also says that she fancies Paulo and David. There is no good or plausible reason at the moment to believe that Rachel is bisexual, or attracted to Jessica.

ILB is right, Rachel herself isn't bisexual. She is, however, a very good friend of Jessica's, so she knows Jess has a thing for Lucy.

Judging from the current page, Rachel is a true friend to Jessica, and sticks by her. Pretty heart-warming, I'd say. Probably the reason why Jess loves Rachel. (Maybe more than platonically - I'd suggest the feeling is closer to agape.)

Fair enough, I really do have almost no evidence at all the suggest that about Rachel, it was initially just meant to be a joke thrown onto the end of my real prediction. But really, no one finds it suspicious that she apparently didn't hear the rumors going around about Jess? Also just want to point out, that chart was made a while ago, nothing saying that Taeshi can't mix things up a bit, its called character development, besides character relations change over time, there could have been something between them in the past but in the present they are now just friends.

Even if she hadn't before Paulo (it is still implied heavily that she has though) she still acts like she has, making her a slut.

But maybe you are onto something here Smash...So much so that I have a new theory! (an actual good one this time, it has evidence and everything). We know that within a year before Tess changed her ways that Jess was just an average student, there was no reason to call her a slut or anything, it is half safe to assume that her virginity was still intact at this point. This was fairly recent, and with the current comic suggesting that she isn't as slutty as people believe her to be, there is a chance that Paulo could have been her first time.

Look at her experience with Paulo, from what we can see she had absolutely no incentive to call him a bad lover, even though he is apparently amazing, if she wanted to cover up her virginity (which seems one of the only possible reasons she would have insulted him like she did) then she could have said something else which wouldn't have been so hurtful to Paulo, so why would she say this? She might have actually believed that it was a bad experience. Why would she think this? Because she has not ever had anything to compare it with. The problem did not lie with Paulo, the problem is Jess, she didn't enjoy the sex with someone who is good at sexing, she must not be bi, but completely gay.
The list of things which make her gay:
- She found her possible first sexual experience with a male terrible
- Her only two possible love interest are both Female, Lucy, and the chart says possibly Rachel
- To a smaller extent, but still supporting my claim, she backed down from her advances on dog boy a few pages ago

Like to see someone try find a flaw in this one

It seems this theory isn't as solid as I had first thought. There are possible reasons explaining what you say though (About Craig anyway), Jess could have just grown up, got a bit more mature, plus she was a lot more in control with Paulo than with Craig...as well as being drunk.

The thing that mainly has me wandering is why would Jess want to make people think Paulo is a bad lover? There must be some incentive behind it.

Tess is massively protective over Paulo, although she'd never admit it. Sleeping with him AND complaining comes off as a double whammy: "We both banged your maybe-boyfriend... AND HE SUCKS!"

Neither Jess nor Rach wanted to hurt Paulo particularly - it was just a way to get back at Tess.

Well looks like some of the predictions were right and others were not so right...as of now I have to say Wow, this changes the typical view of Jess a lot, When I first read Back and Forth, I never would have guessed this was coming. Great plot twist, this is one of the many reasons I love this comic...also WTF David (not that we didn't all expect it)
