Also Civilization 4 (awesome) and 5 (newer, haven't played it yet, but looks brilliant).

The Civs are nice if you are into those turn-based city builders (there is more to it than that, but that's what the game was originally built around). The Elder Scrolls series has been nice if you want the epic-scale, mute-protagonist, western RPG.
The few games I've really liked recently is FEAR (FPS), Amnesia (Horror), or Dead Space (FPS).

I think it'd be easier if you gave us a genre of game you're looking for.

Minecraft and Spore.
I recommend watching "Xs Minecraft Adventure".
PS2:
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, InuYasha: The Secret of the Cursed Mask, Ape Escape 2, and Ape Escape 3.
I own these games. I recommend watching the anime InuYasha before you get the game, though you don't have to.
Trivia: Ape Escape 1 was the first game to need an analog controller.
PS3:
Little Big Planet, Infamous, and Prototype.
I've seen and read good things about them.
Wii:
Epic Mickey and Harvest Moon: Animal Parade.
I have these games and they're fun.
Nintendo DS:
Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass and Scribblenauts.
I also have these games.
Gamecube:
Pikmin 1, Pikmin 2, Chibi-robo: Plug into Adventure, Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.
I also have these games. The graphics in Wind Waker is a big change from the norm but it's still good.
Trivia: There used to be a Legend of Zelda cartoon!

Why is that not a name recognised by dictionaries? I have yet to find it in any I have searched. ^_^
Also Calvinball.

And I agree with Westy.
Also, buy a Gamecube and get Super Smash Bros. Melee. It's so much better than this shit that you kids nowadays play.
Also, play Bioshock. And Bioshock 2. And Dead Space. And Battlefield Bad Company 2. These are amazing games. That is all.

And to answer the original question, Steam, grab the Valve Complete pack; that'll set you up with enough good games for a while.
And I would recommend Brawl over Melee, but given how much cheaper Melee is when it comes to consoles, you're probably better off. Also Super Mario Sunshine is underrated.

Ok I'm gonna argue this I like sunshine, but its not underrated its like Psychonauts the people who like it think its a gift from God and the people who don't like it think the first group is crazy.

That being said, I never played Psychonauts for more than an hour. It was fun, but I never went and bought it. I may pick it up on OnLive one of these days.
Professor Layton and the Mystery of why everyone in that goddamn town has a math question for you.

One and the same.
Another good game is to buy a box of donuts for your friends and put a photo at the bottom of the box of you rubbing your dick on all the donuts. Or get some pictures of a friend's mom and start a collection of amateur pornography that looks as similar to her as possible and then send him that porn for his birthday.

As for FPS's, I'd say, for now, Black Ops is The Best. Go play it.
Honorable mentions : Spider-Man : Shattered Dimensions, COD : Modern Warfare (Both games), Medal Of Honor (2010), The Sims 3, Borderlands.
all on PC.
