BCBcon International 2011: Boston, 7–10 July?

View PostSpaceMouse, on 10 February 2011 - 04:34 PM, said:

boston's a big town! there are three options i see for hotels:

hotel downtown:
pros: minimal commute in
cons: expensive

hotel outside of subway ring:
pros: cost-effective for commute vs cost
cons: kind of few options

hotel on the train lines:
pros: cheap cheap cheap
cons: long commute in, may need cars.

i am boarding a few people at my place, but i'm already full up :( i live at the northern end of orange line, so i'm in the middle area. during peak hours it can take about an hour to get in to downtown.

To mouse think you could give me some recommendations and rates for hotels near you and possibly with a mid to short commute? Links would be loved but names will do fine.
Gee posting from my phone is hard work...

there's a comfort inn and a few other hotels at/near 14 Hill Street, Woburn, MA that is close by to me. on the other side, there's hotels all along route 1; look near 1529 Broadway, Saugus, MA - there's a motel right there on route 1. i figure if folks wanna be close by to me, those are the two big options. busses go from the subway to/around either location.

Well I mean we should probably figure out what hotel to stay at least by April! I know that's not as important as booking flights for rates at the moment but I guess knowing helps for thinking of costs?

Also, when did we want the list to be finalized so we can think of how much lodgings will be divided up amongst people?

I wouldn't mind splitting a room at that comfort inn with a few people. I'm a nice smelling guy if that means anything. Haha

The way this is done is that the host books X rooms at a single hotel, and collects the money from everybody else. A few people make their own arrangements and are weirdoes that miss out on various things because they decided to stay elsewhere or brought a parent or some retarded thing.

There is not a huge amount of time pressure in booking hotels or flights for anyone living inside the US. April is months off and I'd say it's when we'd start looking at booking the hotel, though we could book it as late as June and it'd likely still be fine. There is also an advantage in taking a long time to settle on a number of rooms, because there are always idiots that are completely indecisive up until the last minute, and so the more time, the better.

I still think it's remarkable that you can't book forward more than 3 months on a lot of budget airlines and bus services, for all you nervous wrecks who assume you need to book half a year in advance to do anything.

It is not really a matter of being a nervous wreak, it is more about the fact that as you get closer to the actual date of the flight, the ticket prices go up.
It use to be the opposite, but now that the airlines have reduced flights they are raising prices as the planes fill.

The same tickets I had look at two weeks ago are now $20 more. I have booked a number of flights recently and have noticed this occures more often then not.

So for those of us that want to save money, we try to book early. :-*

Small domestic flights go up and down, they do not steadily increase in price. Missing out on JetBlue or some other budget airline is a bigger risk.

Suit.

fix the dates in the title/first post. It's bloody confusing.

Really really REALLY wish I could come, but I doubt I would be allowed to go to Boston ( which is at least 12 hours away for me), not to mention I think I have summer camp at that time. ._.

This is exciting! I've never had the chance to go to a convention before. I've also not been able to go on any road trips, so this is going to kill two birds with one stone! I am sorry to hear so many people aren't able to make it, though. I'm simply dieing to meet all of you!

Damnit. This better be the best convention ever because I just found out wargamescon (bolscon) is that weekend. What shoddy scheduling... It's always been at the end of the month.

I'm a Californian, so it's improbable. If I COULD I would, but it isn't gonna happen it seems.
