Akacatgirl's Art Thread

Thought I'd do some more human/multi color lineart practice. Sorry it's so small...at least it's small enough that the "Spoilers" aren't really needed.

Hey, that's pretty nice. The legs are a tad wonkey, but the rest of it's damn good.

I think I've asked this from someone else as well, but have you considered drawing smaller eyes? I think they would fit the style better here.

But really, your colouring is pretty damn nice. The arms could be a bit longer and the hair should perhaps flow a bit more (hard to explain 'cause I can't draw it myself, bahah) but otherwise I can't really think of anything else I could be a perfectionist about.

Good job.

i can see sort of a pattern in these single-person pictues. you should try putting them in poses, for instance have them laughing, or talking to no one in particular, such and such. slight things, not like having them fight ninjas in a flaming pit of doom...with skulls.

I've been trying to get out of my old style, and I flubbed up on the eyes. I'll try to make them smaller on my next drawing. Also, on the inner eye I may get rid of the black part, it takes away from the multi-color linart effect. And I guess most people's eyelashes aren't black either...bleh.

I was also not to make her have super long arms and look out of proportion; I should have measured them up to her legs. Well, shoot. And I also think it doesn't look flowy because her hair's in a pony tail and the two front pieces look like a part of the ponytail, blah, blah, excuses, blah. I'll see what I can do about that.

Thanks for all the feedback! I appreciate it greatly. :)

That was gonna be my second thing to do with her. (YOU MIND READER) I just wanted to get her basic structure out of my mind, I guess. I'll try sketching her laying down, skipping, jumping, etc etc.

Everytime I check this thread, I'm suprised of the quality in which your art develops and at such a speed. Maybe I might get to read a comic from (akacatgirl's real name here) soon (when you got the free time), well if thats in your plans.

I do plan on doing a comic sometime, but only when I feel I am well prepared and have achieved a higher quality of art. I don't really wanna rush into making a comic, because then it will be bad quality.

So then, Ive got some tips on monochrome (black and white skectches etc.)No, I'm not being a smartypants.
Position (hands and body)
*take a mirror (you're quick, you'll figure it out)
*use black and white reference pics (helps drawing almost anything )just be sure the referrence pics are the same style as yours
*draft stick model with balls for joints, hand, chest head and feets.
*when copying a position draw over a stick model asthe one mentioned before.

Speed
*use 0.5-7 mechancal pencil (kills heavy strokes helps you to control them aswell as the amount of)

*use a thick led pencil for shading with a pencil covered with paper on its tip to spread fine shades and in the other end with a peice of cloth (tape both ends)

*practice for at least 20 minutes five times a day (digital and colors aslo counts, you'll draw faster and will have more time for details)
*Stroke switly, the faster you stroke the sthe straighter the line but higher the risk of missing so be sure of the direction your strokikng
Last tip keep your mind and and wrist relaxed drink warm milk, eat pizza or dont draw when they are stiff.

Ignore watever you already know from here.

What NeonDfro meant was if there was anything in his explanation that akacatgirl already knew then that she should just ignore it.
  • #613

First off, what Red said. ;)
Neon; Everything in there I'll try to do/improve upon, I even learned a couple new things. ^_^ The only thing I don't really feel would help me is using a mechanical pencil. I don't really feel comfortable drawing with those; They just don't work for me when sketching. Other than that, this was really helpful to know! :)

Now for some art. 8-)

You guys may remember this comic that I did a while ago, so I decided to redo it. The first one was really sloppy and not colored, so I hope you see some improvement on this one. Also, I'm not really sure if it's necessary to put this second one in the Candybooru, but if you guys think it should be in there I'd appreciate your feedback.

Spoiler

This one has Haley and Jordan. And I know I messed up on the number on Jordan's jersey( I thought it was 64, not 20). I hope this doesn't make too much of a difference. ._.

I love that teacher "Is that a code work for 'FUCK?'" XD One big thing is that you might want to show creases in her cloths to better show her elbows, otherwise it looks a little awkward.

Also, that pairing is awesome. I like the way you made Haley have a playful attitude. Suits her. ;)

Yeah, I was wondering why her arms looked weird.
From the comic, it kinda hints at the that Haley has that mean-but-playful kind of attitude. It really does fit her. :P

The original for comparison:
Spoiler

Now that I see them beside each other, I notice a few things.

This is all opinionated, of course, but I prefer the "shaded evil face" of the black and white one in panel 2, as well as the catlike mouth in the same panel. I also don't know why, but adding mike's eyebrow in the last panel of the second version doesn't appeal to me. Also, what happened to the scripts they were holding? That was a nice detail in the original.

Additionally, I do like Lucy's final face, but I miss the little raised hand from the original.

Of course, the coloring is infinitesimally better than the B&W crosshatching.

In the future, I'd love to see angles other than head on. For example, the scene where the teacher comes in could be from a worm's-eye-view, with the face and body of the looming figure obscured in shadow with only the glowing eyes distinct. And in the second panel, to create the illusion of being off-balance, tilt the camera clockwise about 35° so that Sue takes up more of the frame and stands out against a darker background.
  • #618

Yeah the mechanical pencil is ome thing that'll take some time, its for when your doing small hands and if you learn to use it without breaking the tip you'll gain firmity.
Edit: Oh but dont take it too seriously ^-^ no need to force it.( I say it since there weren't any comments after me)

I'm so sorry about the long unexpected hiatus.
Unfortunatly my tablet broke down and I can't use it, and school's been really hard. Sorry to disappoint on that drawing from before Dr.Klaus, and I really do appreciate all the feedback. :) Same with you NeonDfro. And also I'd never thought to use mechanical pencil small stuff! Thank you!
Now on a happier note, I'm going to be taking a realism-still life art class once a week, so I might be able to post stuff from that sooner or later.

The first two are outstanding. They really are. I'm not really feeling the third one though... the chins are two rounded, it hurts the pic.

I continue to be amazed out how quickly you've been improving.

The last one was kinda rushed, and see what you mean. I'll work on that.
I'm glad you like it. ^_^

Also, are the pictures cut off on the edge for anyone else, or is that just my computer? I can see if I can resize it again if anyone else is having that problem.

Wow. Those pencil sketches are so, so much better than your digital stuff, if you don't mind me saying. The set of sketches at the top, in particular, look like they were drawn by a different artist. I think you should try using a paint program like PaintToolSAI to recapture the effect: it captures pressure and tone as well as strokes, so it would look very similar. Also, the hair in the second one is wonderful: try to keep it a little more around the head, though, or it looks like it's trying to get away.

I'm glad you like them too! About PaintToolSAI, it sounds AWESOME, but doesn't it cost money? Because if it does, that may make it a bit harder for me to get. I'm also trying to save up for a new tablet, since as I said before, it's broken.
For the hair part, I think it probably looks like that because I tried to make her hair frizzy. I'll see how I can fix that. Glad you enjoy my new sketches!
  • #624

I think the bottom is cut of on the second, but I don't notice any problems with the first or third.

Another program you can use, if you don't want to spend money, is MyPaint. Like Sai, it captures pressure and tone as well as strokes. The brushes are extremely customizable too. I haven't had experience with Sai, so I can't say it's better or worse, but I find MyPaint extremely versatile.

Here's hoping you get your tablet fixed/replaced!

Are you sure? On my computer it cuts off McCain on the first one, some of the guy's expressions on the second, etc etc. Well, as long as you guys can see it I'm fine.
Have you heard of Corell Painter? That's the program I used, and I felt it captured strokes pretty well, but maybe Sai is better. Can't knock it til you try it!
Yes, I'm hoping too. Thank you! :P
  • #626

Mypaint is mostly intended to compete with Corel Painter, and I've used both. I feel more comfortable with MyPaint. The way it handles layers, and the rather excellent way it mimics pencil are much more natural. To me, Corel tracks my strokes very well, but I really don't like its brushes. For the past few months, I've been using Mypaint for all of my drawing and painting, and it's replaced GIMP in everything but image editing.

Mind you, I only have experience with Painters Essentials, I don't have experience with the full program. As for Sai, I've seen drawings done with it and it looks extremely capable. I can't really comment how easy it is to use, but it has a rabid fanbase that swears by it.

Hmmmmm
I think I'll read up on both (YAY GOOGLE) and see what they both offer. Since I already have Corell Painter, I really have nothing to lose. I'll see about MyPaint and check it out and such. Is MyPaint free, or can you got a free trial or something? I really wanna try it out.
  • #628

MyPaint is open source, I think. It's totally free, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to get it.

Edit: Yup, it's open source.

You might want to erase that hand from the drawing, I am not sure if the judges would accept your entry if you did not.

So, both your scanner and your tablet are both out of commission?

Actually, for the contest you just send the paper with drawing on it. As I said before, the background's still not done yet, so I can't send it in. I just took a picture like that because I originally was posting it on facebook for my friends.

The scanner not fully broken either, but the only way it seems to work is when my brother fixes it. All other times it won't work. :/

Thank you! Maybe they look better since I haven't used digital in a while...? The only reason I prefer digital is because it's easier to sketch and color digitally. I do agree that the pencil sketches I have been doing a look a lot better, though.
