i would like to think that just one city is all cat people and another for where sandy lives, and one day they take a field trip to go see a bunch of humans walking around

Actually... you know whats weird? The universe might well be infinite (and there are some COMPELLING arguments for this).
If that really is the case... there are infinitely many versions of us, all over the place. Might be a trillion lightyears apart because the odds of it happening are so low, but that's what infinity is all about.
So it could be that life like the BCB universe evolved (which isn't really so far fetched, as far as I'm concerned) and is actually out there somewhere!!!
In an infinite universe, everything that can happen has.

More seriously, Taeshi has indicated that the setting where the characters live is similar to New Jersey. There isn't actually a town named Roseville in New Jersey, however Newark does have a neighbourhood named Roseville. And New York City is in relatively close proximity, similar to how the larger city of Maraschino (with its docks!) is only an hour away from Roseville.
Rickter might be compared to Los Angeles (it's across the country).
