Bittersweet Club International Discussion

The new store has a membership section up, go look!

It's a kind of unique thing we've been working on that aims to give you some unique stuff (mainly, random trinkets and some extra privileges on the site) but all dressed up in a kind of fun and interesting package.

I would love to get feedback. It's kind of unique, so it could either be wildly successful or fall flat on its face.

By the way:

I tried hard to do this properly. Apart from the gold card stock being too dark, it's pretty much perfect. Many thanks to my friend Sammy for doing the horrible task of tracing our nameless inspiration.

And of course, what you've all been waiting for.

And right after you whip out #1, I'll sneak up from behind and be all, "MMMhhhhmmmm yesssssss, indeeeeeed." And I'll flash my #2 card while wearing a monocle.

But right, the prospects of the added site features weren't as big of an incentive for myself, however being able to see the incentive comics from day 1 is amazing and I love that idea. I think the greatest part about it is that y'all went out of your way to make the little trinkets that make you feel like you are actually part of something instead of like, "Oh, I'm a rooster teeth member, what does that even mean?" You two really go all out when you do things and I think the low low price of $39 or $59 (for founding) is a small price to pay.

P.S.: Jazzie Jazzie Jazzie Jazzzzzzie.

Try refreshing. Whenever I make a major site change the CSS your browser is caching tends to stick around a little longer than it needs to.

I'm a little ambivalent here. On the one hand, it'd be great to have a way to support Taeshi and the comic that directly impacts our experience as a reader. Likewise, it'd be a great option for would-be supporters who don't have much use for merch and/or don't want apparel.

The sneak peak aspect could be a little problematic when it comes to the forums. Granted, since the preview of the actual comic is limited to one page, the potential for important spoilers to be revealed is probably limited, but it's still something to consider. The incentive comics probably wouldn't be a problem unless people take them more seriously than they ought to.

It's the way this could potentially divide the community that I find a little troubling. Financially determined preferential hierarchies are, as a rule, kind of evil--or, at the very least, intensely problematic. Maybe I'm blowing things out of proportion here, maybe the BCB community is mature enough to embrace such a stratification in a non-nightmarish way. But this is the internet; is it wise to give joe-shitposter a tangible reason (among those countless imagined) to suppose he is superior?

I mean, I'm all for supporting the comic, but this idea turns my stomach a little.

I have to get me one of these.

Not sure if I want the Founder pack though. The extra donation to the comic would be nice, but by the time I decide what I want for a commission they'll probably be all gone. :V

@Seppucrow: That made LOL like crazy. Well played, good sir. Well played.

On a more serious note: I kinda have to agree with Silentvelcro. While it is for a rather good cause, anything that enforces a social hierarchy on an otherwise equal community is cause for concern...

I have a kind of complaint/question to announce - does the BCB clothes in Spreadshirt only come in the coloures previewed? I really like the t-shirts with Lucy and Paulo on, but I hate wearing pink/purple. :(

I have more than enough money Seppucrow, I just lack a credit card or anything else I can use to order online. Although perhaps I can convince my mother to get it as an early birthday gift.

I too agree with SilentVelcro. And while I may or may not have enough money, and that it would be nice, I think it poses too much of a separation problem.

Now I'm not saying that I don't want Taeshi and Suit to make any money, I'm just saying that there's got to be a better, or at least less hostile way to do it.

Are you guys seriously that fucking worried about a segregation problem? It seems to me like you guys are hopping on the paranoia bandwagon. What kind of segregation are you expecting anyways? The same shit that happened with the blacks and whites in the first half of the 20th century?
  • #27

I mean, if there's a distinction made, then people won't be happy. If no distinction is made and segregation is avoided, then I can see no difference. So...waitaminute >_< I confused myself.
  • #28

Seems like a ridiculous thing to get upset over. It's not like members any special powers, they get some sort of recognition (like a shiny sticker placed next to their name on the class wall whoopee) for people to see that they spent money, everything that comes with the purchase looks like it will have absolutely no other kind of effect on anything related to their place in the community.
  • #29

Rofl, social hierarchy my arse.
If people manage to get jealous over a card and some info that lets them see the buffer taeshi works on in advance, they can man up and deal with it, frankly.
What you don't want is people being spoilericious or pissing everyone off going "LOL I KNOW WHAT HAPPENS"
But I'm sure they've thought of that.
  • #30

Sounds cool - good luck with this.
  • #31

This is. wow. I'm sorry, but I think this was a very bad decision. Not only will it divide this community even further, it'll make it practically impossible to join. Simply because the people who have it will no doubt get a superiority complex over those who don't. (especially true for those ten who get a founding member offer)

As a newcomer, I found it was difficult enough trying to join this community. Everybody had already packed themselves into their tight little niches, and were content with that. Some were and still are (Passive-aggressively) hostel to the whole idea of letting more people into their little groups. Just like a bunch of kids in school, nobody wants to play with the new kid, for whatever reason. But say this new kid has awesome stuff? suddenly, it's alright to be friends with them! The same thing will happen here

This just adds an elitist feel to the whole community, and I'm 100% positive that it'll dissuade some people from even trying to get active in the community for fear of being shunned due to status,(I, for one, would not like to be labeled as a "less distinguished reader")and reluctance to shell out some $$$ in order to ascend to the higher tier of the community. Respect is something that should be earned, not bought, and everybody should have to start out on square one.

TL:DR
-It'll divide the community further.
-Newcomers will find it intimidating.
-I don't like it.

Blah blah blah I have trouble writing my thoughts down. Just imagine this was worded better and made sense.
  • #32

Oh there it is, in the fine print:

"If one goes about flaunting their ability to see the single page at the start of a chapter, they shall have their faces removed and their card revoked. Then their last name shall be written down in the "List of Sinful BCB Readers" and their family will be forever shunned throughout the remainder of their existence. If a descendant of the original sinner applies for Membership they shall be turned away and laughed at by all those inside the Member Lodge."
  • #33

Paulo's Keychain will be my >:O .....
  • #34

"What? Why won't the site let me get a BCI Membership?"

"Well you see, son, a long time ago your great-great grandfather was a member of the same group..."
  • #35

Jorje, saying the forum is divided is redundant, because almost every forum community is naturally divided into cliques (the exceptions are ones that are tight-knit and/or to appeal to a narrow community). The rest of what you say is just pure speculation -- it's true, that some people might act superior just cause of their membership, but why bother with people who can only feel superior because of that in the first place? To me, that difference is so minimal it won't make a significant impact at all.
  • #36

I got this since I was going to do a donation anyways and buy the stickers when they hit the store. Bought it right after Ace, I can live with number 3 8-)
The REAL perk of it all though is the Jazzy charm. That in itself is worth the $60 alone.

No one is talking about a segregation except you, and that's ridiculous.

With this change, the definition of being a BCB fan becomes bound up in exchange. You become superior as a fan by paying a certain price. Your access to certain content and an upgraded appearance in the forum reflect this superiority. Does that mean you can't be a good fan if you aren't willing to pay up? Absolutely not, but the website will not recognize you as such; you will not get the “prestige and preferential treatment” of a reader who is willing to pay. What this essentially translates to is that, at least in the eyes of the website, a valuable reader is not someone who loves or even likes BCB. Your interest in the comic is totally irrelevant. Instead a valuable reader is literally anyone who is willing to pay. They wouldn't even have to be a reader really.

If you think I just wrote a paragraph saying that 'international membership' is going to destroy the community, then you've misunderstood. Whether or not the community is mature enough to take an imposed hierarchy in stride is entirely dependent upon the members of the community...and to a certain degree, on the exact definition of 'prestige and preferential treatment.'

The point is, regardless of how this effects the community, it will utterly debase the ideological framework of the comic and forum.

Really, oddguy said it best.

Woopsies, for some reason I misread separation for segregation. I still stand by my point explained in my previous post, that forum communities are naturally separated into cliques.

time to look down on all you people without money, yes yes.

that is in fact all us rich people do.
look down on the poor.

by the way this won't divide the community you're whiners for thinking so
there's already a divide in community between the forums and irc, not to mention the people that are tae's really old DA fans who don't even go to the site
we're not doing this so we can have a special picture on the forums and laugh at everyone else, we're doing this because we want to support suit and tae, since they're deciding to put all their eggs in the basket of bcb. whereas some of us like the comic and have disposable income, we like to throw it at them in a vain hope they'll continue doing it, despite the fact most people who visit barely generate them any revenue at all (just ads).

seriously. if people hate you it's not because you don't have some donator's icon, it's because you're an idiot.
  • #43

Hahahahahaha, divide the community? The BCB forums already contain two groups, The people who are already well known, and everyone else.

Only the people who are very involved in the community are gonna buy this. If I we're to spend any money on BCB though i'd buy this before a shirt anyways. (Everyone would question what the hell the shirt means and i'd have to describe the comic without looking like a furry.)
  • #44

How wonderful! I probably won't purchase one of these right away (saving up for something really big), but I'll eventually get one. Eventually. I like the gifts and though I don't post comments on the pages often, it'd be nice to know that some faggot isn't masquerading as Kaxbe when I am Kaxbe and don't comment on the comic pages often.

As for the issue of "separating the community", to you guys who are whining about it

It's nothing more than a new way to show Suit and Taeshi some support. It's not like buying a membership will all of a sudden allow you to muckity muck and rub elbows with webcomic elite. News flash: Buying a membership does not guarantee that Taeshi and Suit will wub woo fowever. Sure you get cool neat-o gifts, but that's it.
Also, as for members getting access to more content, so what? I for one would like to believe that the BCB community isn't comprised of dicks who ruin/spoil incentive comics and future chapters for everyone.

IT'S JUST SWAG, PEOPLE. DON'T BE AN IDIOT.

I think that members should have a secret section of the forums wherein their text is sparkly, and altered to sound very fancy. Swear words would be replaced with words such as "Poppycock" and "My word!" and "Ruffians!", and people would only use this section for the badmouthing of the lesser kind. All emotions posted in this section will have top hats, monocles, and fancy twirly mustaches. Who is with me on this suggestion?
