Are you guys seriously that fucking worried about a segregation problem? It seems to me like you guys are hopping on the paranoia bandwagon. What kind of segregation are you expecting anyways? The same shit that happened with the blacks and whites in the first half of the 20th century?
No one is talking about a segregation except you, and that's ridiculous.
With this change, the definition of being a BCB fan becomes bound up in exchange. You become superior as a fan by paying a certain price. Your access to certain content and an upgraded appearance in the forum reflect this superiority. Does that mean you can't be a good fan if you aren't willing to pay up? Absolutely not, but the website will not recognize you as such; you will not get the “prestige and preferential treatment” of a reader who is willing to pay. What this essentially translates to is that, at least in the eyes of the website, a valuable reader is not someone who loves or even likes BCB. Your interest in the comic is totally irrelevant. Instead a valuable reader is literally anyone who is willing to pay. They wouldn't even have to be a reader really.
If you think I just wrote a paragraph saying that 'international membership' is going to destroy the community, then you've misunderstood. Whether or not the community is mature enough to take an imposed hierarchy in stride is entirely dependent upon the members of the community...and to a certain degree, on the exact definition of 'prestige and preferential treatment.'
The point is, regardless of how this effects the community, it will utterly debase the ideological framework of the comic and forum.
Really, oddguy said it best.
