Silentvelcro speaks the truth about "giving either of you an opportunity to allay any resultant concerns in a genial manner".

Though on Taeshi-san's side, I think it would be quite unpleasant if people asked me if I would be more lenient with people who donated me money.
It's like, saying "Yo, I'll buy your opinions, you corrupt author!"
But I know people don't mean it like that.

Besides, I, for one, support her art and continued effort.
I don't think there's anything to question about that, so...

My Paypal order said it was order #18, does that mean I can has commission? Also, how will you know which users have donated/bought the membership stuff? I don't use "ChewySmokey" in my PayPal account.

WAIT WAIT WAIT.
My order was 18. It has nothing to do with the Card Number, then.
What now?
Is there a way to know what Card number you'll be given?
  • #103

I spent $59 on a comic on the internet + a few little gifts.
It was worth it.

That's exactly what paying for preferential treatment could be; that's why it sounds so bad! Is it really unreasonable to ask whether or not that benefit is a joke and, if it isn't, what it would entail?
  • #105

  • Lycan
  • call me lyucs

No, not unreasonable, true.
But you'd have to think somewhat lowly of someone to ask like that.

As there are different ways (kinder ways) to answer a question, there are different ways (kinder ways) to ask a question.
  • #106

Ask like that? I recall being nothing but polite until post 100—and I hope you'll forgive me for replying in a tone to match Taeshi's.

My question was, “May I ask what the 'preferential treatment' listed in the membership benefits is going to entail?”

Then I posed some examples of how it could be easily misconstrued. Yes, they were questions, but their purpose was primarily to illustrate a point rather than to be taken seriously (hence the “etc., etc.”).

I then gave the administrators the benefit of the doubt by supposing that that aspect of the membership was most likely a joke.

That isn't rude. I wouldn't be here if I thought lowly of Taeshi or SuitCase. You seem sensible, Lycan, and that's an admirable quality, but of all the posts in this thread you pick out mine as unkind? My intention is to be constructive, something that has concern, care at its center. If I haven't been, then I apologize. But I really don't think I should have to.

That "For instance" escaped me.
Hum. Sorry?

And I know you don't mean to be unkind. I just said it was open for missed comprehensions.
Guh, I think I should retract myself.

Anyways, people won't be better treated if they are paying members.

Lycan probably considers it rude, Velcro, because you're calling Taeshi/SuitCase into doubt at all, and by extension the moderators. If they weren't able to be fair and deal with things properly, would they have even been made mod? You're bringing Taeshi's judgement into question, as well, which is never really polite, and I don't think speculation is a good reason for it.

I see where you're coming from, and why you're concerned but I think you're worrying too much. In four years, I think the pair of them would have learnt how to deal with their fans properly.

If you're unwilling to occasionally doubt or question the people you respect, people in positions of power, then you're engaging in worship.

I was not speculating, I was merely asking for clarification. As I have tried to suggest, those questions were supposed to exemplify how a vague and potentially misleading term can be easily misconstrued.

They've been doing this for any number of years, sure, but this is a completely new idea and feedback was asked for. If I can't convince you of the propriety of my posts after this much, then I concede.

The entire point is to be a parody of the super platinum cards that credit card companies have. That is the entire point of the snooty tone of it; its meant to sound all spiffy and superior and such. The entire point is mock-elitism. The real purpose of membership is to support the comic.

See, the problem is we're having to explain the joke to you. Were you a big boy, you'd understand it was just that - a joke. Seriously folks.

The entire point of the top hats and monocles is to carry the joke forward.

Now, get back in your place commoner!

I'm also wondering if that line is actually just a joke, since it seems like it could've been ripped from a snooty ad for a bank, travel, or hotel membership. That seems pretty likely, actually, but I'll ask anyway.

You don't need to explain the joke to me! But I guess it's not much better if you have to tell me it's a joke. 'Might've saved me the trouble of embarrassing myself, but I guess this is the internet.

Edit: Thanks, Susan.

Crumbs. I hadn't realised they'd be such a heated discussion over the pros and cons for this thing. I just bought one after being overwhelmed by the awesomeness of the offer. And I don't like to turn up an opportunity to throw money at Tae, naturally. 8-D

Well, I never got upset by it or anything but I didn't notice that joke. ._.

Are Canadian credit card ads different than American and Australian ones? XD I doubt it.
  • #116

Hahaha seeing you people get upset is so funny.

Why get so worked up? Taeshi and Suitcase have never been preferential. Suitcase has actively admitted his dislike for these forums, so why worry? It's not like he's gonna engage with you on a daily basis.

Aw, can't we pretend he'll care? ._.
  • #118

I don't think he will, but most of the users do anyway.
  • #119

Ah, I figure if it brings more money into BCB, it's gotta be a good thing. Right?
  • #120

Also, Yappy: DAWWWWWW your avatar is so CUTE! :D
  • #121

I think it's a great idea, and I'm glad Tae and Suitcase are getting a lot of support already. I don't personally see what the big issue is. Do you read/get involved with the BCB community to be popular? I've known Tae and her work for YEARS now but I know we're not nearly as close as she is with some members. But that doesn't bother me because I'm busy with school and a ton of other things, so I don't spend too much time on the forums or the IRC chat. There's natural segregation/cliques anywhere anyway, no matter where you go, both online and IRL. I believe some people just think too much and/or are paranoid about the wrong things. Buying/not buying the membership isn't a life threatening choice guys, lulz.

For now I can't afford one but I'd love to be able to support some day. Keep it up Tae and Suitcase!

Oh, I'm sorry, Taeshi. I was under the impression that SuitCase had asked for feedback. But you're right. Instead of worrying about an unexplained and potentially misleading aspect of the international membership and giving either of you an opportunity to allay any resultant concerns in a genial manner, I'll take a lesson from the other posters in this thread and adopt an unquestioningly supportive, fanatical attitude so that I can regard such inquiry with the proper degree of contempt.

You aren't giving feedback, though. You're making paranoid, stupid accusations out of nothing.

like here's an example if you paid for membership i still wouldn't want to talk to you HAHA

And Aika up there is someone I've known since before the site was made. She could contribute NOTHING to me monetary-wise for the rest of my life, but I still think she's s rad person and I enjoy her presence and I'd try to talk to her when she's on IRC.

Like seriously.

You're assuming that Souppy and I are gonna use really slimy special treatment on people who buy memberships. When there was NOTHING STATED IN THE RULES ABOUT IT. Why would we add this?

So, the link for the 59$ one on the Store will automatically stop working when 50 people get its membership?

Lycan, yes.

I am thinking there should be a members forum, but only Vero and I can create threads, so we'll create topics like

"Magic Tricks Full Comic Comments" or "First Page of Chapter 64: 'Daisy's Pregnant!!' Comments", and when those are no longer embargoed, we'll move those topics back out into Social Studies. No other topics.

There would be no stupid "I have paid $$$ so we can have secret conversations" board. What's the use of one?

Ugh, I wrote more after the above line but the board ate it. I'll rewrite it later.

Oh yeah, about that, I know BCI Members will have a sneak peak of the first page of the next chapter,

but I think I read something about them also being able to see every new page to be released a little earlier then non BCI members? Like, one or two hours before "public" release?

I think being able to see the first page of the next chapter won't do much good. Imagine we're having this super long chapter (like the current). Seeing the same first page of the next chapter for, like 2 months... And I'm sure people will spoil to non Members.

Feedbacking feedbacking. :smirk:
  • #130

It only says they you may "skip ahead", not how far. I'd consider it perfectly reasonable if you could only peek ahead, say, a week or two from the end of the current chapter.

I mean, who wants to spoil an entire chapter? Making every first page deliberately vague would rather miss the point, so there's a fair possibility of losing the potential angst from a month or two's story. Which would suck.

Ehh. Feedbacking feedbacking also.

Well, yeah, what I read gave me that impression, I'm just trying to understand if I read right.

And I said I'd rather be able to read the pages a little earlier than the public release than being able to see the first page of the next chapter.

Well, I'm quite OK with what they're offering ^_^

The main comic will continue to be posted at the regular schedule, but Club members can skip ahead to a sneak peek of the first page of the next chapter.

This seems fairly straightforward to me. The main comic still gets updated at the same time for everybody, however club members can have a peek at the first page of the next chapter.
  • #135

Continuing from my post which got half destroyed:

The item #18 thing is so weird, I didn't think it'd be visible to buyers. It's just an internal Paypal shopping cart code. I'll have to try and fix that.

You won't know your card number until your card comes in the mail. Sorry!

I feel like Silentvelcro wasn't initially confrontational and bad, but he misread Taeshi's response and became agitated. Our attitude about the question of what "preferential" means is more confusion\bemusement, not actual anger or offence. It does seem to be reading really hard into what was just more ad copy.

Either way, it is exactly as it says on the page. The preferential treatment is followed by talk of the special status symbol next to your name. This is all it refers to. I would definitely ban or be unfriendly to someone who is a BCI member, if there was reason for it. Not that we ban or act unfriendly very often, though, you don't need a membership for us to act normally :S

You can't skip ahead to like, the next unposted page of the comic. That'd be a hard thing for us to do, and would kind of spoil the way the comic unfolds. Instead, we want to offer a thing where you get the first page of the next chapter. This will force Vero to constantly be a whole chapter ahead, and give you a sneak peak that's not too spoilerific. It's a minor thing but it might be valuable or interesting to a lot of you.

There was nothing about seeing pages two or three hours early. Is that really so valuable to you guys?

There are 10 founder memberships left! Snap them up!

I figured I had misread that.
But, hum, yeah, that'd be cool, if possible.
But it's not like I'm gonna get mad if that doesn't happen ^_^

I say that because the page updates 3 AM here. Maybe I'm being egoistic, but I would absolutely LOVE if the page updated midnight instead
  • #137

I think it's a fine idea to support the comic and all - I'd contribute if I had any money.

Anyway. Just thought I'd point out 1 thing:

Even if you did get the comics a couple hours early (which won't be the case from what I read), the spacing between the ones you can read will be the same. After you buy the membership or whatever and login, sure you get the first one say 3 hours early, but you've still gotta wait 2 days to see the next one!

It'd be a pointless benefit.

edit - grammar problems for the loss.

If I have any explanation, it's that I come from an educational background where reading really hard into things is part of the skill set. Obviously, I should know to tone that back in a situation like this or I'm going to make an ass of myself, as was demonstrated. The agitation was another thing entirely, a thing that isn't really excusable. So, I apologize for that. I'm sorry also, in my agitation, to have unwittingly been responsible for what was essentially a dialogue about popularity on the forum. That was really not my intention, considering how weird and pathetic such a conversation is and how unnecessary it ought to be.

Hmmm... but if you were to wait until 9:00 am every day or so, the spacing between your viewings would always be the same still, right?

Unless you don't like being out of sync with the rest of us by as many hours, which I guess makes sense. 8-)

Lyucs, my advice is for you to move to the west coast of the United States or Canada. Then you will get the comic at 9 pm, and have plenty of time to discuss it and browse the forums before bed. ;)
  • #145

its exactly what it describes. It is there way of just wanting more donations by offering a reward (which then it isn't a donation but better for the donor) I don't understand the anger at it. those who pay see the page earlier. Those who pay get better features. Those who don't don't get that stuff. What needs to be understood is that none of these features were available before. Suitcase, Taeshi, bardelbee, john scott, samuel adams, Jasco jones, and merry festivus aren't taking anything away from the usual users just adding more to people who pay. nothing is going to change if you don't buy a membership. you will still have all the cool art, fun and irreverant reposts that lolwut fills his time with whether you enjoy a membership or not. I encourage creation of these memberships because it is just saying that making a donation now gives you a little gift.

but i'm a hypocrite so probably won't get it but if you ain't paying nothing will change.

Sold out of Jasmine keychains! Kinda thought I'd have time to adjust to the supply issues with this, but, uh.

Anyway, it's on the store now, but anyone signing up can either get Jasmine sent to them with their SECOND mailing halfway through the year, or pick another character keychain to substitute. It kinda sucks but I don't have any other alternative!

Oh, out of curiosity,
about the other 2 gifts that will be sent throughout the BCI membership year,
do you guys have them in mind, planed out, or you'll choose when the time comes?
They'll be fixed, the same for everyone or you're planning on letting people choose from a limited list you'll create?

Guh, I sound terrible asking those ^_^
Only curious, though.
There's room for "Not going to say it, hold until they arrive ^_^" answer =D
