For starters, I haven't read the book or watched the movie.

Now my opinion, is based on what I've heard of the series (and only what I've heard).

So, as some of you have already mentioned, it basically butchers the concept of a vampire, which in my opinion, is important. Did they have to make him so nice and change the vampire nature in order to be able to have a romance story with vampires? No I don't think they had to. I will now present you with and example:

Tsukihime (Graphic novel/Dating sim)

Basically, Tsukihime is (in my eyes) Twilight done right. Romance story between a human and a vampire, with the slight difference that in this one the vampire is the girl instead.

Tsukihime was terrifying, brutal, funny, and heartwarming. All at the same time.

Tsukihime does play with the concept of vampires as well, but at least it takes a while to explain why vampires work the way they work (basically, the main bloodline vampires are superior and can be around in the Sun, while the bitten-transformed ones die on the sunlight; one of many differences between the two races).

So yeah, I've never heard about an explanation about why Edward's so different from the vampires we know.

but i don't want to waste money on something that i don't like the look of

To be honest I would hate the book less if it didn't have the fanbase that it does.

And I agree with Scotch, Twilight should be in $5 romance novel section of the bookstore.

I still cannot fathom how it got as popular as it did.

Also, i have read the Twilight books, and seen the films. I hate them. In the book you can never be sure where they are. Forks, sure, but whats the weather like? What time of day is it? Her description skills are lacking. The Fourth Book is like softcore porn done badly, and again like its for Meyer's own personal satisfaction.

The werewolf isn't even a werewolf, he's a shapeshifter. They just choose to be wolves... Also, those things in the movie are just too darned cute to be taken seriously. I mean, they look so fluffy and cuddly!!

I also have a really big problem with Bella and Edwards relationship. Apart from wanting to make out like rabbits. THEY HAVE NO COMMON INTEREST. AT ALL. If you can name me one, i would be surprised

Haven't seen the films, haven't read the books, sheerly because they don't seem that interesting. I'm trying to widen my horizons, but I'm not quite at Twilight. I honestly couldn't care either way. Being impartial is fun

I don't hate Twilight, but then, I've not read the books or seen the movies. What I do have a bit of a problem with is the cultural reaction to the books. The intense polarity on the subject is fucking ridiculous.

You like it? That's fine, but you should probably put down your posters and signs depicting nubile teen hunks and not react to negative criticism of the text like a person has just tried to make a toilet out of your face. You want to rave like an idiot about the books? Great. You want to be bestial in your affection for one or several of the characters? Awesome. But you should know better than to do it in public and expect not to be criticized.

You don't like it? That's great, maybe if you were a little less irrational about why and how much you dislike it, the subject wouldn't receive as much popular attention and you wouldn't have to hear about it half as often as you do. You want to call the fans dumb? Cool. That's probably justifiable, but just how much of your time is it reasonable to devote to disliking it? Why spend more than a few moments concerned with something you think is utterly retarded? Do you hate yourself that much?

I'm not accusing anyone in the forums of behaving like this, but there are people that do. If you're oblivious, a relatively shallow google search should be enough to tell you that. As to the question of why the book is so popular, I'd be really interested to see a study done...but not interested enough, I guess, to read or watch any of the actual series.

Secondly I realize vampire is a very broad term and can be basically anything that takes life force even though technically succubus would fall under this. My problem is that they decided to make him a vampire, but then made him a pussy that the only vampire like trait about him is his ability to suck blood which he revokes. Yes I know the whole vampire not liking his curse thing has been used before, but those stories they still were vampire like they were brooding and dark hated humanity, but they were not angsty and just wanted hugs. I think you need to take a chill pill and to read someones opinion before you attempt to destroy it

Really, her vampires may not be as shitty but they are still shit.

I used to hate Twilight and Twihards alike.... That is, until my mother became a twihard. At that point, I realized that it was rather unfair to hate someone for simply liking a book. That said, I still rather dislike the Twilight series but, have become more or less indifferent to it.

out of morbid curiosity i examined one of these novels while i was at work, it appears to be a romance novel with all its substance extacted and glazed with a thin layer of gothy angst. after half a paragraph i died a little inside. after going home i saw that the movie was on and figured what the hell, i attempted to watch when i noticed what appears to be an Oxycotin addict who had his face beaten in with a shovel fighting with a shirtless catamite over some sleepy looking chick and grew bored an angry almost immediatly.

in conclusion...not my cup of tea

Not to disagree, but really, why is it everyone thinks "Carnival" when they think of Rio? I also think of beaches and one huge slum. But why Rio and carnivals? São Paulo's pride parade is way more of a big event.

But on to topic. I don't hate Twilight, I don't think it's the crappiest thing ever and I don't think Meyer writes badly. But I do think it's silly and too simple, and kind of anachronic, like all typical romantic novels/movies/stories are. Really, this is post-modernism, who needs romantism as a core? I say it's relaxing to read something like that every once in a while, but it isn't really "OMG best book evAH!".

Btw, I assume everyone in this forum reads bcb. Sorry to tell you guys, but bcb is just an evoluted version of romantic drama with some (good) comedy amidst. And really, if you ask anyone normal, meaning NOT any of us readers, they'd say bcb is just as stupid as twilight. They'd go all "omg cats and dogs befriending and living school lives with furries society! that's soooo laaaaame! furfags!! y'all so gay."
But, well, that's not my opinion. Just saying it so that hopefully you will notice that spreading weird addoration or morbid hatred for Twilight isn't going to make you feel any better. Really.

I have all four books, and I read all of them.
I hate the fact that vampires sparkle in daylight. That's just gay.
For some reason, what I don't consider gay is that vampires can have special abilities.
Also, I'm pretty sure that the majority of both boys and girls in my grade hate it.

Oh, and the first movie sucked like hell, and I hope that the other ones are better, since I didn't get a chance to watch them yet.

Okay, heres the thing. So many people hate twilight simply because EVERYONE hates twilight. I fondly refer to these people as 'sheep.' They will follow around whatever the hell is trendy at the moment. They were the ones who bought every damn book and talked about how much they lllluuurrrrvvveed Edward or ER MA GERD LOOK AT JACOB and all that and then when people decided that it was no longer cool they turned around and said BURN IT WITH FIRE.

That being said. I have read the books.

The books, are books. they aren't terrible, but they aren't really worth reading either. They are mediocre and fade into the background of many similar paranormal books I have picked up and read on whim. Nothing memorable. The helpless girl finds her super powered boyfriend who can do no wrong and they have freaky sex and save the world. The end. So, I don't care. I neither like nor dislike this book. I give it a "MEH."

Now the movies.... the movies are absolute SHIT. I went to see the first one with a friend who was die hard twilight (and later jumped on the hater wagon. Sheep heads at their finest.) and really.... it sucked so much. I could have seen dark knight instead but I was stuck watching that crap. I went back to the second to see if it got any better and walked out maybe... ten minutes after it started. Waste of time, the director, because yes I watched the director talk about directing the movie just to see, struck me as a complete idiot who should never have been given the title of "director" or maybe its just that unlike a book where you can skip fifty pages or so when you get bored, you can't fast forward a movie theater. Who knows.

The movies are boring and the acting is really bad, that's why I hate 'em. I never bothered with the books.

fun fact: the original vampire is more similar to Edward than it is to Nosferatu and Dracula.

I read all the books and watched all the movies, but at the end of the day I just don't give a shit about Twilight.

My main complaints about it is that the writing is bland and the characters has literally no life to them. Bella's just a plot device that gets Mary-Sue powers at the end, Edwards the "suave sexy and totally irresistible" vampire guy for Bella, and Jacob is the love rival who happens to be a werewolf who decided that "when Bella's baby grows up i'm totally gonna tap that."

I don't think it's horrible, some characters are enjoyable like Charlie for example, but at the end of the day it's just bland and I couldn't care less about it in the long-run.

actually, none of that stuff was applicable to vampires in the first place. it was all added on later. the original vampire, that is, the first one to appear in literature and therefore was the model all other modern vampires were built upon, was created by John William Polidori, who was p much Lord Byron's dishrag. Lord Byron loved to bring Polidori around with him everywhere so he could p much make fun of his ambitions to become a writer. Polidori would later go on to write "The Vampyre" and modeled his creature after Lord Byron himself. also, the vampyre wasn't defeated at all. the notion of "defeating" a vampire didn't happen until Dracula and Nosferatu.
