Ad banner ideas

I think we had this thread before on the old forum, but as we're going to be doing a banner revamp soon, I wanted to know if anyone had any good ideas for them.

Something like the Lucy\Mike dating sim banner is a good example of an interesting banner we'd want more of. But it's hard to come up with concepts like that.

Additionally, other ideas like "take this sequence from the comic!" or "draw Lucy talking to the viewer" or "animate this character tearing at the side of the banner" would be so helpful.

Based on past threads, I don't think a lot of people understand what makes for an effective ad which will entice other comic readers to click, and give them an accurate impression of the comic so that the ones that do click will enjoy the site that pops up. It's really hard. But if any of you have the imagination, could you come up with suggestions and ideas?

Your banner ads need to pander to the lonely and sexually deprived furry population. Tons of T&A.

Seriously though, I think something illustrating Mike and Sandy's long distance relationship might be nice. Like the two of them talking on those "string and can" phones.

How about a "group picture" of the cast with various edits made on each character, kind of like the cliche mocking edits that people do in yearbooks to be spiteful or silly.
  • #3

Lucy being sad about Michael, Michael being sad about being far away from Sandy, Sandy being sad for whatever it is that made her look unhappy in "To The Top."

And then you phrase this all as an ad for Prozac. :D

really i think ads that kind of poke fun at the nature of the comic are the ones i click when browsing around. i don't really click something like "updates three times a week"... i click on weird, completely unexplained ads. like this one:
http://www.projectwo...-1294957497.gif
completely no explanation. my reaction is "hahaha what". that's what makes me click ads, at least.

ideas:
big 'ANGST ANGST ANGST' banner, completely over-the top. maybe have another character slapping the angsty one out of it at the end.

I like that idea. With a 'most likely to...' thing?
And i really loved the dating sim style one too, made me giggle when i saw it around.

i think this is boring but the horse part isn't so bad

if i wanted to make a cynical ad i'd assemble a generic cast picture and slap the headline "STUPID ANIMU ROMANCE SHIT DON'T CLICK ME" but i dunno man cynicism is risky business

honestly if i were tae right now i'd just pay snooths to make an ad ahaaaaaa

A picture of Lucy and Mike when she was about to tell him that she loved him on the left, whith the words "Heartbreak in 5 4 3 2 ..." on the right.

I really liked the dating sim spoof. Would it be in bad taste to do a banner ad that's a Pokemon spoof? You could have a stylized version of Lucy (so that she resembles one of the feline pokemon, maybe) appear and, if animating it wouldn't be too much trouble, it could go something like:

"A wild LUCY appears!"
"Go, MIKE!"
"MIKE uses INDIFFERENCE"
"Wild LUCY has become depressed!
"Wild LUCY uses BAAAWWWWW"
"It's super effective!"
"MIKE has fainted!"

and then the comic's title could appear and hover there for a few seconds before the animation loops again. If this wouldn't be too big a pain in the ass to actually make, I think it has the potential to be dynamic enough to work.

Anything incorporating "8 AM... Time to break Lucy's heart" would be fun. ^_^
  • #10

ILB's idea is actually really good.
  • #11

Agreed.
  • #12

Mike and Paulo in medieval armor suits looking like they are ready for a fight while a princess looking Lucy watches from a balcony or something. It could also be incorporated that they are fighting for her heart or something.
  • #13

In the story Mike isn't even fighting over Paulo for Lucy though; he doesn't even want her. The whole idea sounds pretty generic anyways.
  • #14

I know but I was just throwing something out there that may or may not inspire another idea in someone. I'll get back with a better answer later.
  • #15

I don't think any other idea will beat "8 am time to break Lucy's heart". It's perfect!

contrasting colours :D and question
will win :D

who about a charater on a contrasting background?
  • #17

My vote goes for ILB and Sean.

A great idea. It might work well enough just to have the banner be an excerpt of Mike's planner. Something like, “7:00—mail letter to fashion model girlfriend. 7:30—pick up scarf from dry cleaners. 8:00—break Lucy's heart.” If you wanted to give a little more context than that, show the readers a little more about the comic, you might do panels, like the dating sim banner.

panel 1: Mike in the doorway of his room telling his mom he's going out. His desk with the planner on it is in the foreground. (this establishes that the characters are teenage cats).

panel 2: close up of planner with something like the time table thrown together above.

I apologize if such specific ideas are actually less helpful, but ILB's suggestion just brought this immediately into my mind.

"8 AM, time to break Lucy’s heart" really is a great line.

Not sure what artwork would go with that, though. Maybe sad Lucy with Mike yawning and ignoring her?

I'm not into this idea because; 1, it lessens the impact of the catchphrase; and 2, the catchphrase comes from Lucy's mindset -- your idea makes it sound more like it would come from Mike's which I think is out of character.

Oh, is that right? I thought the phrase was funny exactly because it was uncharacteristically harsh, but I suppose I could be mistaken. In any case, I think you're meant to be able to have fun with your characters in cases like these, dramatize them a little bit.
  • #22

Well, my other issue with your idea is that paints Mike as a stereotypical asshole who hurts girls' feelings for fun.

I don't see how it will make it more dramatic -- I don't think stereotypes dramatic at all.

BLIND COMMENT!

Updated characters or chapter one-esque blue scarf abbeyless? I'd usually spout on about "AAHHHHH let your fans draw it! so much of their stuf is pretty!" I can't now because well hey, it is Taeshi's and Sexy Souppy's. I really have to appreciate the open mind you have to the community. Makes me think of freedom

The ad I saw was one of Mike and Lucy side by side at night looking at each other. I thought

A.) It was cute
B.) Well drawn
C.) Looked romantic
D.) Compared to the ads around it it looked god like.
E.) And lastly I was going through a certain personality flux(NOT A PERIOD)and frankly I figured feel good comics would be good for me and it most certainly gave off a feel good vibe.

This is all I can recommend.
