*slowly backs away*

It's possible, however, that Alejandro and Roger have some kind of connection with each other. Just a possibility.

The common connection, if there is one, would be Tess. There's some evidence Tess may have gone out with Alejandro as a freshman before she dated Roger in her sophomore year.

There's evidence? Where? ._.

Truly this is a thread of highest caliber.

Well, it's all mixed up with Augustus as well, so you'll have to bear with me here.

If you look at this page in "Carry On" and these two pages in "Follow Me", you can see how Tess initially reacts to Augustus. She's suspicious of him; clearly she knows him from somewhere.

Next, skip to this scene in "A Distance Apart", at the beginning of Tess' senior year. Tess jumps at Augustus' presence, but he tells her she's irrelevant and of no concern to him. Tess is not the one he's looking for, and she should be happy about that fact.

Now why should Augustus be looking for Tess at all, and why should she be glad to avoid his scrutiny? Note the scar on Augustus' face in the seventh panel of this page in "Love My Way", and how he comments on Daisy having hit him in the "same spot". Then jump to the first page of "Moving On", where Augustus mentions Alejandro's "stupid ex that hurt me that one time". Note also Alejandro mentions that Augustus has been a member of his gang for some years.

Finally, go back to "Love My Way", where Paulo overhears people talking about Tess. Apparently Tess went out with a senior when she was a freshman two years previously, and was drugged by him. This person can't be Roger, since according to Augustus, Roger is a senior now (i.e. Tess' junior year). When Tess returns from the bathroom, she basically confirms to Paulo that she did something that was her own "stupid fault", though she doesn't go into what exactly she did.

The implications to be gained here are: (1) Tess was originally Alejandro's ex, and (2) she hurt Augustus at one point previously. Of course, the evidence is nowhere near conclusive, but I think the backstory clues are there to be picked up if one looks for them.

Roger is a fancharacter, made by Tess' creator.

Confrontation was done much before than Tess' introduction, so, if that's true, it was made up after Confrontation.
  • #15

Time traveling fancharacter. He makes you think that you created him, but then someone else does and you realize what a fool you have been.

I expect that is true: many of the story details were developed and/or adjusted after Tess was introduced. And don't forget, "Confrontation" itself was rewritten.

Comic authors rarely have the entire story written out beforehand. They may have an idea of the story they want to tell, and sometimes they even have an ending in mind, but still, the story process is usually fairly piecemeal: a rough framework is created (the basic storylines) and then all the little details are painted in afterwards. In this case, Taeshi adopted a fan character (Tess) and further developed her so that she became part of the story. Of course, Tess probably already had somewhat of a backstory (i.e. Roger) developed by her original creator, so that had to be fitted in too. And yeah, keeping the details consistent for someone else's character can get kind of complicated, which is one reason why inserting fan characters isn't really that great of an idea.

Well... I expect that writers in general usually spend a lot of time thinking about these details before simply throwing them inside a story. And while it may be complicated, it's not at all impossible. I don't know about bcb specifically, but my experience with reading and occasional writing tells me that all the time-references are usually very accurate in a story. Buuuuuuuuut, who knows, anything still can happen.

Well, I think Taeshi and SuitCase have done a lot more story-planning since the time Augustus was first introduced. The storylines before then weren't really planned out in that much detail, I don't think, or with as much thought for future exposition. Which just goes to show how much Taeshi has honed her craft as a storyteller in the last few years.

I know it doesn't really affect your theory one way or another, but since he was punched in the face by Abbey three pages earlier (on the same side Daisy slapped afterwards) I think that's what he was referring to, rather than the scar.

Also, since I'm a newcomer, when was Alejandro's name revealed. I don't remember seeing it in the comic, so I'm guessing it was revealed elsewhere maybe?
