Love Hurts (Commission)

I think your suggestion to shoehorn in references is ridiculous and stupid as well. Honestly, that's probably one of the dumbest suggestions I ever heard. This isn't a TV show where the character is holding COKE ™ while reading A LAW AN ORDER SUMMARY ™ on their MACINTOSH LAPTOP ™, it completely removes the illusion and only seems.. yeah as Maverik said, tacky as fuck. Yes there are clever ways to go about it, and I'm sure it can exercise writing skill, but for the most part it is the sort of thing that would break me out of the illusion of the story. IMO.

That would also bring contradictions.

Given that the character in disguise is Sandy, how on earth could she have watched the movie? She's underage, she's the type that would be kind of squeamish watching gore movies like that, and here's the real kicker - her parents don't let her do anything! She doesn't really watch movies!! So for her to just casually make that reference is off-the-wall and out of character. I have called Maverik out on the various plot holes in Love Me, because man oh man is that riddled in plot holes, but that would have added more.. other than being really freaken corny as hell.

Remember the time David had an incredible bitchfit over a dumb fanfic featuring cats impaling one-another acting as if it's Maverik's magnum opus when in the end it was a fanfic I asked him to do just for shits and giggles, and the fanfic he DID get paid for you seemed to not have ripped apart for "plagiarism" so at the end of the day he got paid for an "original" story?

Nevermind the fact before Love Me, Maverik was already being hailed in the forum as a great writer, having written I dunno maybe like five or six other fanfics so the concept of "oh you wouldn't have gotten a commission had you not written this fanfic", I'm pretty confident Maverik would have. Only idiots think of Maverik as the "author of Love Me" and nothing more. And only idiots would assume he is making DEM MONIES off plagiarism. Maverik has cited in the past that it's not even like he put an incredible amount of effort making this fanfic, that it was just something he did, but because of the content he got infamous for it even though he's written much better fanfics that get nowhere near the recognition (The Best Intentions, anyone?)

I really don't think it's the torture elements themselves that have caused people to cringe, it's the emotion. The rage people felt towards Sandy, the sympathy towards Lucy, the plot twist. I honestly couldn't tell you all the torture scenes out of memory because those just didn't stick to my mind. It was the emotion and the conversations between the characters that got me most of all. The torture methods were just some addition to it.

Also remember the time I have not cited references to things put in my comic

pretty sure i've done plenty of that

it's more of a case where it's "hey guys spot the reference"

am i plagiarising guys

am i

But yeah, I call bullshit on you thinking Love Me was his official big break. I don't think you were freaken there when it happened. Maverik was ALREADY being hailed as a good author, it just wasn't all on the forums. I remember being on Skype, bouncing ideas with him, people complimenting him, saying he was the best for all the other fanfics he wrote. Love Me was a fanfic that completely was over the top and gorish. OF COURSE it would get a whirlwind of attention, but that attention already existed. It only attracted a certain new number of people, just like his previous work attracted new numbers of people. That was established already no matter how confident you feel about "oh oh oh BUT HE DIDN'T GET THAT MANY COMMENTS IN THIS FORUM TOPIC THAT MEANS HE WAS A NOBODY"

I assure you he was not. I was there. You're only making assumptions. Wrong assumptions.

You're honestly such a scumbag to be so presumptuous and pissing on all of Maverik's skill just because of one stupid fanfic, ignoring anything else he's written assuming he's an official hack for something just because it "got popular". Your assumptions about him "hiding away until his secret was not mentioned" are complete and utter bullshit as well, I remember he was talking pretty deeply about Love Me on IRC/skype/wherever at the time of posting. And honestly, authors who come and spoonfeed the audience everything annoy me, so I think it was fair enough he was quiet in the thread for the most-part. He was not at all hiding, he was just observing people commenting and reacting to his work. Many authors do that. And I can say that he was doing that with confidence because I know Maverik pretty damn well compared to you, you weren't there, you're only bouncing around on stupid and incorrect theories.

I really think you shot yourself in the foot, really. Because to criticise Maverik for unoriginality would be a valid complaint, like "oh I've seen this done before it wasn't that imaginative" coulda worked in terms of criticism, but then outright labelling him as nothing/a disgrace and stripping him of whatever integrity he might have is downright wrong.

God David, this is just such a generic troll, can't you at least try to be original?

Maybe you should cite your references before you rip off posts and change them only in minor ways.

Quote

Originality does not exist in modern day life, or if it does, it shies itself away, letting thousands pass over it, only a scarce few who sift through the dirt and grime picking it out, looking it over, and sharing it with the others. Every idea, every story, every movie, everything people create to entertain and enthrall has been a new version, a different version of something else. You can write as much as you want, but your ideas are influenced, knowingly or not but those of others whom you have come into contact with. Anyone can make connections between any piece of literature and another story of some kind, in some media. Avatar is Pocahontas, Eragon Series is Star Wars and Star Wars is a "tracing" of the oldest story, the Hero Journey. What I truly believe at this point is it's not exactly lack of originality that can make a writer but the delivery of their work.

Having studied this, I'll actually tell you something:

This is utter bullshit.

It is true that we are additive, but it is wrong to say that we are not original. Originality is about building something new. The combination of elements in an original way IS originality.

Star Wars is a good example. Is it the hero's journey? Yes. But the hero's journey is a hugely generic and incredibly vague cycle with lots of "ifs" in it. A lot of stories are the hero with a thousand faces, but just because a lot of stories ARE that doesn't mean they are all the same. The Hobbit is utterly different from Star Wars, even though they both follow the hero's journey.

There's a big difference between originality (Portal) and simple good execution (Portal 2).

Who cares if an original work draws influence from a previous source anyway? How many fantasy genres took a few ideas from Lord of the Rings? How many thrash metal bands drew influence from Glam Metal bands? And stuff like that.

Titanium, two thumbs up to you. Poo on David

In this thread, Too Long; Didn't Read.
Nothing is original.

Yes before this one we had the renowned classics: Carson sodomizes Paulo, Sandy burps semen, and that one with fancharacters and someone being hit with a pipe. I remember those days.

You'd be right. There are indeed missing scenes. Scenes that would be covered should I ever feel the motivation to round this off as a trilogy.

Still. I've always agreed that these stories are sort of a mess of plot holes, and a few of these fixes are in fact retcons from how things happened in my head originally when I wrote Love Me.

Wait, there are missing scenes? I'm confused; do you mean missing scenes from the already existing "Love Me" and "Love Hurts", or missing scenes reserved for a possible third part of the story should you ever decide to make it?

I don't care if the story is a mess of plot holes or whatever you call it; I enjoy it, and I'd love to see another sequel. :)

I mean missing scenes in that there are scenes that I never wrote that took place during the events of Love Me and Love Hurts that would explain a few things a bit better, and they would be covered in the theoretical 3rd installment as the reasons behind everything would be revealed.

The first few pages of this thread had a lot of butthurt in them...

...I bet Abbey would know something about that. ;)
