Jasmine: A discussion We will discuss Jasmine

  • Ace
  • BCI Member
Hello, this is Ace, and I am here to discuss Jasmine (similar to the Jasmine appreciation thread but different)

Why does she fascinate us? She has been around for a short time, has little character development, and often has the same facial expression! So why?

For me, I think it's when I first saw her I said, "Wow, that character has an interesting and cute design, I hope Paulo chooses her." And he did. I was enamored by this character and when we saw her on the date and her actions back in school, I was instantly hooked to these glimpses in her personality. What delight! This character who has been on only a few pages at this point enthralled my heart! As we move into Halloween we see her in a different light, as Paulo's helper in the scaring arts, looking so good doing it. What will we see from her in the future?

So to sum up, my love of Jasmine was not based on great and demanding logic, in fact alot is based on shallow perceptions! But I feel she is an excellent character that has much potential in the future, and I would encourage others to post why, or why not, they enjoy this fiesty feline
  • #1

It's the potential she has, as well as the suprise. The way she was introduced gave little indication that she would be around for anything more than half a chapter or so. Yet Jasmine is began to come into her own as a major character who is rapidly proving to be a good foil to Paulo as well as managing to do the impossible by saving Paulo from the combined might of both Lucy and Tess at the same time. It also throws doubt into the long presumed TessxPaulo pairings, despite reluctance on Tess' the on-again off-again relationship they had seemed to be a normal thing up until recently.

Jasmine is absolute perfection. She has a great personality, good looks (love that fur pattern she's got) and great friends. Being with Paulo of course is a boost for both of them. Halloween she did not fail to disappoint either, having one of the coolest costumes there and doing a damn good job of scaring the kids. Her magic expression has generated one of the greatest things out of BCB, so great that it at one point was a PAYED AD on the site. That is special right there. I hope to see far more of her in the future, and especially that magic :O we've all come to know and love.

I do find it odd that tess and abbey where so scorned for being new but she is loved.
It makes me think that the REAL reason for dislike of the charactures is how conviniantly they lead the main cast to happyness
  • #4

Jasmine is so cute! I ship PauloxJasmine, I really hope Paulo isn't using her.
  • #5

Jasmine is intelligent and fun. Opposites attract~
  • #6

Same with Ace, the first time I saw the freshmen, I hoped Paulo would pick Jasmine. Before she was named, I remember calling her the "stoic cutey" or something because she seemed very quiet and she was in fact cute. Man was I wrong. She turned out to be a cunning little kitten, and the following chapters just made me love her more with her subtle innocence and generally cute antics. Every time she appears in a panel or strip, I just get giddy inside. :O

So, again, do explain how this topic is different from the Jasmine appreciation thread. ^_^

It's different because instead of going all "OMG JASMINE <3 <3 <3 <3", we're actually discussing why or why not she is so popular.

For me, I believe that it was her character design. Take a look at her first appearance in the comic. Just the first panel alone will suffice.
Posted Image
The eye is automatically drawn to her, not just because she's the center focus of the panel, but because of her design. A character with hair that is kept up in a style unlike any character before. A character wearing clothing that can be described as Asian in origin. Those two things already make her stand out from her two friends, one of which has annoying ears and the other who is just blah.

But it was not just character design alone that attracted people to her. Let's take a look at the second time she appears, when Paulo picks her up for their date.
Posted Image
She displays here innocence that hasn't been displayed by other characters, at least, not in the same way she shows it. She was waiting eagerly by the door for Paulo. That adds a ton of points to her adorableness factor.

However, I think she became most awesome in the eyes of many fans at the end of "Back and Forth" when she "saves" Paulo.
Posted Image
Paulo's line in Panel 8 sums up almost everyone's reaction to Jazz.
Her amazing insight to Paulo's situation gave a whole new level to her personality and character. The sweet, innocent, and possibly naive Jasmine saves Paulo. Paulo, the "token womanizer" has become the damsel in distress, with Jasmine as the prince.

Also, it didn't hurt that she dressed up as a kimono zombie for Halloween.

Mhm. I understand that; however, you were the first one to actually do that. ^_^

I feel her portrayal has been good; however, I do not like her (as a character) as much as I have enjoyed Lucy or Paulo and their personalities. Or, for that matter, the rest of the main cast.

I just noticed that she openly says.....it's not important....

Excellent points Catsby, the pictures really emphasize said points well. Yes her character design is just... man it's awesome. It's funny how some people reacted to her without clothes in the current chapter, perhaps because we are so used to her wearing clothes, without them it's striking! And yet very welcome.
  • #13

As awesome Jasmine is for saving Paulo's ass, it's also a reason to be angry with her. Sure she saved him from a possible beating, but it was a beating he deserved. The good outweighs the bad, however.

Anyway, Kaxbe sums it up pretty nicely, and even includes pictures.

(nameless) Hopefully Paulo's reaction to that makes him realise the error of his ways.

Jasmine is a more interesting (for now), younger version of Sandy.

Good observation, but by the time the newest chapter is over, Sandy will have no hope in being more interesting. Jazz got more flushing out in those parts Kaxbe brought up than Sandy in the entire chapter dedicated to her. Though that was JUST to show Sandy.

Oh my, I adore Jasmine.

I'll admit that I wasn't too fond of her when I first saw her; at the time, I was a crazed PauloxLucy fan (and though I still support the pairing, I am content with PauloxJasmine).. XP But still, I like her. She's just.. amazing. The points that Kaxbe made pretty much sum how I feel, though I might as well add a bit anyways..

Well, for one, she has an amazing design, as a lot of people have pointed out. Her hair color, her fur pattern.. They just go really well together! Personally, I adored the clothing that she had, and it'll take a while for me to get used to her without clothes, but eh. I just love how cheerful she looks most of the time! She seems to be serious when she needs to, but she's still a happy soul. She makes a great match for Paulo. A good way to keep him in line. X3
  • #17

I was actually PauloxRachel for quite a while after their... evening... ended so disappointingly. Jasmine was cute as hell, sure, but for a few pages at least, Rachel had the edge on her in my mind - partly for being as devious as Paulo's best.

Then that third strip happened.

In only a few moments, Jaz learnt most of Paulo's romantic history, made the decision to stand by the muppet, plotted an escape route of McCain-level brilliance, managed to brief her friends and delivered her own lines to free Paulo. Wow. She even offers a pass on the girlfriend issue.

I was reshipped.

Jasmine is now on the Characters page! :O

I wonder if liking Jasmine is kind of like how folks feel about Augustus, which I kinda noticed when the art meme was going around cbooru.
Thus far, there's not a whole weight of canon behind Jazz, the way there is with the big six, who have had chapters and chapters of "This is why Lucy is tsundere, this is why Mike is an butt." Ye can come up with yer own theories about who Jasmine, or Augustus, are as a result of this vacuum. They're kind of like inkblots, and what you see in them isn't so much in the character as it is in your head.
I also like the two of them because they're offering a pressure release for the six-man group. Daisy, you don't actually have to date Michael. Paulo, you don't have to date Lucy. You can all still be friends.

I also think Jazz as a character is super-cute and fun-loving and her hi-jinx provide a neat counterbalance to the Angstylosaurus MikexLucius.
If Taeshi has her hit with a cement truck or something, I will be sad probably :(

Edit: Whoa why didn't anyone tell me we had these emoticons goodness gracious  :smirk:

She's cool enough to not be obsessive and dramatic which drives Paulo (and Ace) wild.
  • #21

Jasmine's got it all. She's intelligent, clever and cunning but yet somehow appears innocent. No-one seems to pay much attention to her, but she's active in the background having fun in her own way. She's Paulo's girlfriend, but for some twisted reason she's not so dependant on him as you might think. Paulo's the man who gets anyone he wants (or at least thinks so) but Jasmine's the one who commands, even though she makes it look like Paulo's got the upper hand.

Jasmine's cool and collected, she doesn't show her true self unless necessary, and even then she's got more than you bargained for: she fought back when Paulo took her to a horror film and didn't get frightened. Jasmine's more independent person than any other person in the BCB and for that you should be grateful that she doesn't get more time in the comic ("ice time" for all Canadian Bissonnette fans around there). She's like the little sister you're all afraid of who will surpass your achiements.

And the one who will not tolerate it is Paulo. And given the current custom of things, it will be interesting to see how Paulo adjust to new situation, because it's Jasmine who makes the statements from now on.

I'd like to highlight these two sentences. Firstly, she's not independent at all. She's entirely reliant on occupying her time with activities because on her own, she is a singularly boring person who hasn't spent enough time reading books to know what compromise or deceny mean.

Secondly, he's tolerated it pretty well for the past month or so, being shunted to the side in favour of mundane activities that, if I were Paulo, would make me realise she values no one so highly as herself, and would drop that selfish bitch like a sack of five-foot spiders. She's hardly "got it all" when she doesn't really understand a thing about empathy.

I think you all are over thinking this (with Sushi being on the right track, but a little extreme). She's just a freshman in high school. You guys seem to give her too many qualities of grandeur.

We know you love jasmine, Ace, but she WILL die. It has been written. She is too superfluous.

I'm guessing it'll happen this chapter.

(BTW, TL;DR most of this topic)

Ohai guys. I'm a random person who hardly posts here.
Anyways, this isn't going to be a TL;DR post. (Maybe) I like Jasmine because she is cute and seems a little different from the others? I don't know.
Also, I don't know why but I want to call her poppet now. I have problems guys. D:

What. Why did you dredge this up from the depths of hell? I mean Jasmine is awesome and we all acknowledge this and our adoration keeps her spirit alive but geez, how far back did you have to go to
  • #35

Oh god what. I don't even know what's going on anymore.
  • #36

I've become accustomed to her presence, but her inability to realize her affect on paulo bothers me. She is smart, but like smart people she has a tendency to over look the simple things, and that hurts her standing greatly in my eyes.

I know where its from. Thats the very reason why your a fucking fat pedo, you fat pedo.

Also Jasmine is quite the character in this webcomic. She seems to be allot like Daisy in a way that she is constantly considerate of other people, but somehow not very much about Paulo. Thats a flaw she needs to work on.

Yay for character development. Now Ace can love her for more than her shallow appearance.

Ace says: "Jasmine!"
  • #39

This chapter might reveal other reasons as to why jasmine neglects paulo or something maybe? Just a thought

As long as she shapes up and gets things into gear. I'm pauloxlucy, but willing to give others a chance as long as they know how to treat paulo.

You foolish doubters, you dare defy the will of Jasmine the great?

Perhaps, in time, you will see that your whinings about her not making time or being terrible are false. Perhaps you will see beyond your pitiful short sighted views and then embrace that which is Jasmine.

We can only hope
  • #42

Or perhaps taeshi shall shatter us all, and put jasmine in the back seat in that car from "crash"
  • #43

More like put her on a bus that leaves and doesn't come back but yeah the point remains. I'm interested to see just how Jasmine will interact with Paulo this chapter.

I don't think Jasmine takes her relationship very seriously. It's especially obvious when she called Paulo a slacker despite his helping her during that election thingamajig. Quite a slap in the face, no? And yet I can still picture her being surprised if Paulo dumps her because it appears that she has it all and has nothing to worry about. Could she be subtly avoiding him with convenient excuses?

I started off with an "ok" opinion of her, she was an interesting character, but she's lost some recently. The next few weeks will probably be the deciding factor in most people's opinions of her. (Apart from Ace, who'll blindly follow her regardless of any developments)
  • #46

She is kinda terribly naive. I mean, she's a good addition to the group, but she needs some time to...uh...get her quota of angst in.
