I am not aloud to look into the symbolism of something just because it is simple? Also do not state the reason I do not enjoy something is because I am enjoying it wrong that is flawed logic. All I wanted to know was if the author had a reason because they could have represented it as night and day rather then sun and moon. Some crazy feminist somewhere could make a conspiracy theory that because the sun is the good one the author was trying to say male characteristics are dominant. I do not feel this way I can just see a crazy feminist saying that far crazier statements have been said by crazy feminists.

Yes, well I do not know the writer's intentions are, but it seems that this over analytical concept people have about it detracts from the fact that it's a silly show about ponies. But it seems this has gone beyond ponies. I would question whether you have insecurities about feminists, but I don't see what that has to do with ponies at all.
  • #52

Sadly I don't have any opinions on ponies other then they are small so I shall go away and only come back when I feel it is necessary. Also I don't have anything against feminists its just sometimes people are so overzealous about it that it they start to say sexists things against men like men are the cause of all war and only men commit sexual assault and then I get in trouble for pointing this out.
  • #53

1. I made this thread for the pony fans I know are on here so if you don't like it don't comment. I never got this when I made a post about the Alfred the Hedgehog cartoon.

2. Episode 1 is the worst episode you don't even get to see the battle at the end of the story.

3. Luna is coming back the creator said so.

4. The creator IS a feminist so she wouldn't put an anti female message in it.

5. The ponies pulling the chariot are not animals they are the princesses royal guard.

It is a show designed for little girls, with an emphasis on "little". Little boys might enjoy it too, though there is a definite gender split amongst franchises like this one, Beyblade, Totally Spies, or many older examples. It is true that quality production values and great writing can lead to this line becoming blurry, but MLP doesn't have the same universal appeal these breakout series, like the Powerpuff Girls, had. The writing just isn't as good.

Foster's Home is a good comparison. It had universal appeal, was very well written, and most importantly was not constrained by plots understandable by very young children. It is a good cartoon worth watching as an adult.

MLP, while very well executed and obviously produced by talented people, obviously does not aspire to be be the same thing as Foster's. It is an adaptation of a franchise for little girls that is made so well that it holds some appeal for people outside that demographic, whether they be 1. not little or 2. male. There is nothing wrong with saying it's a good cartoon, because it is. But it's not the sort of cartoon worth changing your avatar to or drawing tee-hee-hee-so-funny-I-just-love-drawing-ponies fanart for or making threads about or anything. It is still a cartoon made for young children, and it is not something an adult should ordinarily watch. I have watched it, and I know it is not a Pixar movie, as much as you might want it to be.

But then again, what do I know? People said How To Train Your Dragon was a great movie with universal appeal. I thought it was clearly a kids' movie, and not fit to be compared to proper movies with serious attempts at plotting and writing.

SuitCase, is your only grief with the show the simple/predictable plots and flat character personalities? From my perception, those are the only things that make it any different from say, BCB for example.
I don't understand what you're asking here. 90% of the appeal of any fictional work to me is the quality of the fiction, but doesn't that go without saying?
  • #55

First, I would like to say that I have nothing against your tastes. If you enjoy this show then more power to you. Everyone deserves to have something they can enjoy. I am inclined to agree with SuitCase in that this show is not meant to reach out to viewers in a broad demographic. It is a very specialized show. But you like what you like and no one can take that away from you. And I especially agree with you that it is important to break the mold and defy expectations based on arbitrary gender stereotypes.

But there is one important thing that you are missing. And this is not meant to target you specifically, as many people do this, but it is an important thing to know. This:

This topic is too good for Recess. I'm moving it to Social Studies.

This show is so overrated. I really did try to like it because I know I do have a habit of being harsher towards things that are incredibly popular, and while I adore all the cute animations/meme images that have popped onto the internet, I just.. couldn't get into it.

I think the writing is painfully mediocre, the only thing that saves the show is the wonderful expressive animation and I guess the interactions of the characters, but I can predict the plot five minutes into the episode and it seems the characters change depending on the plot (Like Twilight suddenly becoming giggly-girly-happy-time-sleepover-yay-friends-are-awesome and Fluttershy changing from being shy to being scared of fucking everything. Flanderising already like five episodes in?! It's pretty ridiculous.)

Fluttershy was basically my favourite character until that dragon episode. Now I don't know anymore :-[

I mean I feel I'm walking a slippery slope in the whole "Oh you think you know the characters better than the creators?!?!?", but those episodes bugged me big time and it wasn't just the predictable plots.

I mean I guess I shouldn't be too harsh on the stories because I shouldn't be taking it seriously right? it is a kids show, after all :-*

Honestly I thought there personalities were consistent. Fluttershy is a very easily scared and timid girl who is often afraid of strangers and scary things she grew some balls in the dragon episode to show timid kids that they can be strong too and she was only able to be that strong because she had her friends behind her she would have run away in any other case and she's gradually coming out of her shell.

Twilight is society retarded most times and didn't have any friends except spike until recently so she was very excited about her first sleep over.

There is more then one side to everyone's personalities.

It really sounds as if you're trying to force yourself to enjoy a show that you don't actually like by focusing on a single thing and ignoring all the rest.

You're right, I was more or less wondering if you had any more insight on why it's so childish and one-dimensional other than the fact that the show has to be so dumbed down for kids watching the Hasbro channel. I think you pretty much answered me before you replied to me directly.
Generally, it seems to me that it's a victim of circumstance because it's being produced under the HUB's specifications (not to mention that that's what Lauren's been implying), which I'd say is why continuity isn't so important or vital for that matter (like Fluttershy and Twilight's apparent fickle personalities). It just doesn't have to take itself so seriously as a more major production like Foster's. Not to imply that any of that is an excuse, that's just that way it is. Which just leads back to saying "it's just a kids show like it or don't."
Personally though, it's really the visual charm that gets me. I admittedly have an affection for pretty much anything in the realm of "Hello Kitty Cute."
  • #72

I have to say I enjoyed the 2 minutes of Rastamouse far more then the 22 minutes of the pony show.

(Fluttershy, weeee)

I skimmed a couple episodes, I can't tolerate that amount of "cutesy" things in one sitting, makes me light headed (seriously, it does). I will agree with you that the animation is really great, but the character personalities REALLY got on my nerves, it's like "OH FUCK OFF! FROWN OR SOMETHING!", but that's just me. Even if I could get past that, the general feeling is a touch bit too juvenile for my taste. Like I said, whatever floats your boat, but not my cup of tea.

RickAstley: No, that's stupid. The fact Fluttershy suddenly changed from a timid shy girl who is scared of a few things to a REALLY FUCKING SCARED GIRL HOLY SHIT EVERYTHING IS FRIGHTENING I CAN'T EVEN FLY OH MY GOD SCARED OF MY OWN SHADOW AND LIKE A CRACK ON THE FLOOR OH MY GOD even though in episode two i was holding myself pretty well, and kept the shy and timid aspect intact, is very stupid. That definitely feels more one-dimensional to me than anything. Exaggerated personality for the sake of an already hackneyed plot.

It woulda been much better to keep her at her normal timid/scaredycatness because then her sudden change to FIGHT FOR MY FRIENDS wouldn't have been so forced and ridiculous.

The only reason I'm giving it a hard time plot-wise is because I've had people be all "Man this show is so smart and clever with wonderful writing and you should watch it" and when I DO criticise the writing for being predictable and done a million times in other children's show, I get "hey man it's just a children's show, you should like relax and have fun with it"

like what do you want me to pick man

I could probably give it to Twilight being more excitable, but her excitement just seemed akin to Pinkie Pie standards. You can be excited for something without completely trashing your original personality.

True, that. The fact that she suddenly seemed unable to use her wings even though she has used them well both before and after seems odd, for instance. I do believe it may be arbitrarily (and perhaps forcedly, I will admit) attributed to her fear of approaching the dragon, though - I find that fear tends to culminate.

I sit and watch this show with Oreo sometimes. It is sort of silly, but I do love the animation. I really miss this kind of animation. Some new shows just look so cheaply made. (Like the new episodes of CyberChase.) Plus, it makes me laugh. :3 As long as I'm having a good time, I'll watch the show.
