THE Final Fantasy

So, I'm a bit of a Final Fantasy nut, and I thought I'd contribute a thread in Social Studies as my first thread to make me look better. Oh wait, did I say that out loud? Oh well.

Those not interested in RPGs or vidyagames in general, need not apply.

Things to discuss:

  • Favorite Final Fantasy game?
  • Which FF game had the biggest emotional impact on you (and why)?
  • Which was your first FF game?
  • Which FF game(s) are you playing now/lately?

I'll start.

1. Hard choice between FF7 and FF8. On one hand, I love the characters much more in 7, but 8 was the first one I played. Overall, I'd say 7 because of the more character-based story, as opposed to FF8's more convoluted space/time/sorceress one.

2. Crisis Core. Ending scene. I'm 19 years old and I cried manly tears at the end. I liked the way they implemented the DMW at the end, because the entire game it was pissing me off, then all of a sudden it started depressing me. Well played, Square. NOTE: If you haven't played or planned to play Crisis Core yet, but have played FF7 and want to see it, here's the ending battle then scene. The relevant part starts at 17:35, the parts preceding are just other bosses in the game.

3. Final Fantasy 8. Man, that was a good one to play first.

4. Lately, I've been playing Crisis Core and Dissidia on PSP, and FF13 on Xbox360. I like all of them, and I don't understand why people seem to hate FF13 so much.

I seldom play video games anymore, since it's hard to find the time, but I did spend A LOT of time playing Final Fantasy.

1. I would have to say FFX. Probably one of the best games I have ever played. Right up there with Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.
2. It's a tie between nine and ten. I think I was a little young when I played through seven so I didn't understand it as much as I did nine and ten.
3. My first was seven, although the first I beat was nine.
4. I don't play FF games anymore. Once they released 11, everything went in a downhill spiral, and that was a little before I got internet access. Once I got the internet, I started playing my first MMORPG, RuneScape.

1. Final Fantasy 7. BEST CHARACTERS EVER!
2. Final Fantasy 7 and Crisis Core. Aerith's Death and Zacks Death made me cry and When I finally OBLITERATED Sephiroth, I felt that I had actually killed a real life bad guy like Hitler.
3. Final Fantasy 7.
4. Final Fantasy 12, FF 13, and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.

Have people played Final Fantasy 1?
Maybe FF2?
Three...?
Certainly the fourth one. No?
The fifth in the series?
Oh no, not even the sixth?

7 is good.

I remember the first time I played 3. Died after 5 minutes, to the note.
Games to love and remember, ladies and gents.

Also if 12 was multiplayer in that friends could play in your group that game would have been a freaking awesome MMO style game. I don't like MMOs but that felt like one and it was still pretty good.

I've played 1,2,3,5,7,8,9,10,12,13, Tactics, Tactics Advance, and X-2. Granted 1-5 were only the remakes, never the originals.

The earlier one's were awesome, but they just can't compare to the awesome that is the later one's.

I've played FF 1 and 2, I just am not a huge fan of them. They were okay, certainly, but I hated "Oh look! A new character! He's gonna die now." in FF2. It was extremely overused.

I love all 6 of the first 6 games you mentioned, with the exception of FF2's progression system which was fucked up man.

I'll be honest. I don't like 7. At all. Maybe it's because I loved the more fantasy elements that died after 6.

However, if i were to pick a favorite, it'd be 5, or 9. Both had well written characters, had excellent class/ability systems (albeit completely different) and both had an air of humor other Final Fantasy games didn't even attempt.

I felt as if 10 did a pretty good job in the humor department, but like you said, it's all story at this point. The class systems are not as fluid as either 5 or 9.

It's hard for me to play the new ones... due the gameplay's rinse-wash-repeat turn based fighting style (it's not the style that kills me, it's the lack of new innovation between the entire series). The story is still immaculate I hear, but it's not enough to keep me interested at this point.

I completely love 8, while luke-warm to 7... probably because I played 8 first.

The tactics games (ps1, GBA, and DS versions) are very well made as well.

Never played 10, actually.

12 was actually the first FF I tried. It was almost the last.

A year or 2 later I picked up 1 Dawn of Souls and loved it.
  • #10

OMG!! You Haven't?! Auron is the most bad ass hero in the series. Just wish He had his own game.

I loved Dawn of Souls / Soul of Rebirth. I actually have it on my laptop right now, too.

Loved the Dawn of Souls stuff. Have to get far enough into FFII to actually try SoR now.

I'm playing FFV and FFIX more recently. FFV's going fine, but FUCKING OELIVERT!!!

Have to say without a doubt that 8 was my favorite. I loved the romance heavy plot and the charecters. after that id say 6 then 10 then 7

was very disapointed by 13, too damn linear, fine charecters and all but not enough incentive to really get to know them

Final Fantasy as a series is overrated and not really all that great. There has always been far better RPG's on the market.

  • #18

I think the Final Fantasy series went downhill after the first game.
  • #19

I'd say the mark of the beginning of the decline is when they moved to Sony with FFVII. Sure, VII was really popular, but in it's core, not that good. And let's just say that although 8 might have been okay, 9 awesome, and I don't know about 10, once they got into double digits THEN it started turning shit.

V and VI were two of the best.
  • #20

To be honest I really liked FF 12.

Most people bash it, but I really like the way they did the combat system, and the game had a fairly solid story.
  • #21

You liked that combat system? It tried to be real time, but kept the ATB bar, so you had to wait 5 seconds for a command to actually register in the guy's head.

And isn't Vaan kind of unrelated to the story?
  • #22

Do you think it would have been improved if he was? Vaan wasn't that great of a character to be honest.

When I said 'solid' I meant 'it didn't suck' not 'devoid of missing plot devices/blah blah blah'.
  • #23

I suppose. And that one pirate/thief/whatever guy escaped the "total bosnian" problem that a lot of the PS1 game characters had.

I loved FF10, it was great. The depressing feeling was very unnerving, but was very cool.

But I absolutely hated Seymour. I'd rather for him to have been underdeveloped, but I feel he was developed in the wrong way. >_<

Glad to see you understand.

Seriously though...

FFI: Good core game. Almost non existent story.
FFII: Competent core game. Interesting innovations. Good story.
FFIII: Competent core game. Interesting innovations. Boring story.
FFIV: Dull core game. No real innovations. Meh story.
FFV: Competent core game. Same innovations as III so nothing new. Meh story.
FFVI: Good core game. Few innovations. Actually really good story.
FFVII: Buggy core game. Materia was interesting. Generic if well written story.
FFVIII: Dull core game. Junction was poorly executed. Generic and badly written story.
FFIX: Dull core game. Irritating skill system. Retarded and ridiculous story. Dumbest final boss ever.
FFX: Dull core game. Sphere grid was NOT as awesome as people say. Story was painful and horrible.
FFXI: Competent MMO. (Never played it though)
FFXII: Interesting core game. Gambit system gets silly. Story suffers from useless character syndrome.
FFXIII: BORING core game. Nothing new or interesting in the slightest. Story is just... Ugh...

And the new FF MMO was so horrifying, that they actually apologized to the fans for how bad it was.

I'm sorry to say it, but as much as I myself used to wait in eager anticipation of the next FF's release, I can look at them now and think "This series REALLY isn't that great." Sure, I have fond memories. FFVIII was the first RPG I'd ever played in my life. I struggled against it and it's confusing junction system until I beat it. Though, now that I'm older and get the junction system, I can, with little to no effort, effectively break the game by making it stupidly easy by just junctioning smartly.

Most of the games are shit. And the one's that get the most praise are often the worst (see FFVIII, FFIX and FFX). It baffles me how the franchise has become the icon that it is now :\

I mean really. I'd much rather play Chrono Trigger or Grandia or Star Ocean... There's always been a better option. Final Fantasy just has the most brand recognition.

fav: 6. every character is unique and cool, keeping the combat fresh.
emotional: eh? dunno what to say here. haven't really had a moment.
first: 4.
last i played: dissidia. probably will play the new one, it was pretty fun.

10 was pretty great, the battle system is actually pretty innovative for the series (the turn order bar, where it shows who is going next, and you can increase/decrease your cooldown in-between attacks by doing different ones). 7 i played the pc version, got stuck behind a statue, gave up. 6 is amazing. 4 and 5 were okay, don't remember them all that well. turned off of the 12 style.

Everybody hates fuckers that never die. Seriously, I hate it when you have to fight the same guy like 5 times in a game, and each time he is somehow more powerful.

The only problem with FF10 I had is that, well, it did a shitty job of explaining everything. I didn't find out until several years later that Tidus was actually from Dream Zanarkand and not from the past, and that sin was created during a war between Zanarkand and Bravil.

I still don't understand why destroying sin destroyed Dream Zanarkand though. And fuck if I can explain how Tidus came back in FF10-2 (that game was a pile of shit anyways).

Also mav, all you talked about where the core titles. Have you played and/or liked any of the spinoffs? Crystal Chronicles, Tactics, Dissidia?

Yeah I've played Tactics (PS and GBA versions), Dissidia, Crisis Core, and a little bit of Dirge of Cerberus. I think others too but I can't think of them at the moment. Crisis Core was a refreshing change in battle system, and I love Dissidia (even though Inner Chaos mode Chaos makes me want to create a kitten holocaust)

EDIT: Ah, that was directed at Mav. Oh well.

Favorite Final Fantasy game?
Final Fantasy VII (Then FF5, FF4 and FF9)

Which FF game had the biggest emotional impact on you (and why)?
Same one (SPOILER: You know, when Aeris is killed and you are 12/13 it can have a good impact :asd: )

Which was your first FF game?
Same one

Which FF game(s) are you playing now/lately?
None (I was playing FFTA2 but dropped it)

Final Fantasy VII was the first one I played and the one I'm more fond of and since of this I wasn't able to fully enjoy the others (since I was accustomed to the steam punk world nad the materia system), however I can see clearly why so many people say that it is not a game that good and prefer the others...
In the end it is a tastes matter.

While reading Maverik's post I was kinda disappointed of what he wrote, but in the end I realised that he's not wrong:
Thinking nowadays about all the Final Fantasies I played I can't see myself playing a new one, I just can't find an interest... The only one I think I could play again is Final Fantasy Tactics (and maybe FFXI since I'm a fan of the job system).

Dirge of Cerberus was a piece of shit, wasn't even worth the $20 I spent on it.
No story, crappy gameplay. Vincent has no character depth, why on earth did they make a game about him?

Just because they did all the other FFVII games: Merchandise...
Vincent is highly considered by fans since is a kinda badass character and a game wich revolves around him would had a good selling (at least is what I think about all of this).

I could go on all day about Final Fantasy, because I have played every one of them. I even played the ones exclusive to Japan only.

Obviously I love Final Fantasy, it's my favorite game series. So i'll just say Final Fantasy four is my favorite, and Cecil is my favorite character.

I played the DS version not too long ago. It was. The hardest. RPG. I've ever. Played.

That turned me on in ways I couldn't imagine

I love the way Cecil acts, he's honorable and honest. Mike-like.
But I still think he looks like a drag queen in this:

If you look for the original artwork, he's even stranger.
Amano sure did his work on him...

Final Fantasy IV. Fuck yeah. You can't hate any of those characters. Or that plot.

Although my heart still lies with V and IX, four is the second final fantasy I willingly purchased, after I+II dawn of souls.
  • #42

I'd just like to state that Soul of Rebirth made me die a little inside the first time I played it.

I devoted NO TIME AT ALL to leveling all the dead people. Then I get to SoR and I was passed around like currency.

So I had to replay FFII :/
  • #43

Lol. How would you even level Scott? He's never in the party.

Hope you had at least leveled Minwu and Ricard a little, they were in the group long enough for that.

Anyway, just wanted to say something to Lv. 50 Fighter: Technically, aren't all the mainseries Final Fantasy games worldwide now? I know Final Fantasies II, III, and V were originally Japan only, but both II and V were remade for the PS1 and later GBA, and FFIII finally got a DS version for 20th anniversary.
  • #44

Yeah I know. The second playthrough I powerleveled the SHIT outta Minwu Ricard and Josef. Just sat on the southern tip of land underneath the starting town until I could level near Mysidia. 6x Masamunes ftw.

Then I laughed when Scott ended up getting one hit (because I didn't bother with him) when I went to get the Ultima tome.

Sorry wasn't too clear on that. I suppose I meant to say I played them while they were exclusive to Japan. The original Final Fantasy III which was made into VI and such.

Also FF II...hardest damned thing ever, I still can't figure out how to beat that thing. The fact that you can wander into some hard fight from the get go and get killed ugh..

Well the first fight you're supposed to die. I was curious, so I cheated on an emulator and killed all the knights. Just sent me back to the title screen.

As for 'random' the only area that has disproportionately strong monsters is the very southern tip of the peninsula below the starting town, and that's probably a coding area I think, as those are supposed to be on the land on the other side of the ocean (or it was intentional so people could eventually powerlevel far past the story there)
  • #48

Well I know you have to lose that first fight, but I wound up going south and getting killed, and I hadn't saved my game for hours....I was disappointed in my FF skills that I hadn't picked it up FF II since then.
  • #49

Yeah just don't go all the way south to the tip and you should be golden. Unless you end up near a desert. Then you should run away. Really fast.

Personally I saved a lot, that way when I started to encounter horribly strong monsters, I'd just back up and try to find the right way. (Also, if you're playing DoS, Select+B brings up the map (If it don't come up, you might need the Key Item Scott's Ring, which you get very early on)

But yeah, I hate when you get into a zone and don't save for a while then end up dying, or having your PSP/GBA/whatever die on you.
