Forum Communities

Well, if you decided the title was eye catching enough, I was wondering about the interenets and forums. I really only like to post on another forum that I have for years. We have a pretty tight bond there because there's only like ten of us (odd considering it's a forum dedicated to something really popular). Yeah, they're pretty good friends.

Anyway, we have a tight kind of community, hidden from the rest of internet. Civilised and stuff. And I was wondering, how close exactly is this forum? Because, at first glance, it seems very quick and filled with all sorts of people, but do any of you see a connection or community you have?

It's a vague question yes, but I philosophise. So, how is your community here?

(Also, helpful for me, because I've decided I should post on more forums, and this forum seems okay.)
  • #1

There's definitely a close nit group here on BCB. I'm not really too entwined in the community, but there is a distinct niche here that you can notice (ie: the regular posters, mods, ect.).
  • #2

actually pretty civil. i mean there are some people that have just been here for a really long time and know eachother but it is pretty easy to just jump into the bcb forum and be "accepted" by others. I mean some of us play video games, some draw, others do both. we are pretty chill bout it

Stop cheating on me with other forums.

I'd say this forum is a pretty nice community, really wish I could get into it more but I cant think of anything clever to post most of the time. And what lolwut said.

We're all elitist douchebags.
  • #6

If I was forced to say something about it I would say easily distracted. Though this could just be the threads I look at because I refuse to look at long text ones.
  • #7

While there are some tighter knit communities than others on this forum (I.E. The RCers, the Olders, IRCers ect.) It is surprising easy to fit into a grope. Just give us a couple of weeks or so to really get to know you and You'll become an integrated part of the group pretty quickly.

And this coming from an semi-old fag should tell you something, cause to be honest I've found a particular type of family in this forum that's hard to find anywhere else on the internet in such a short of amount of time.

There, there, Sushikins. There, there.

To be fair, this community is a little bit polarising. There are a lot of nice folks on here, and I'd like to think I come across as pleasant enough, but there is a certain tendency to have multiple standards. If whf acts like an annoying dick, we find it cute and amusing. If some random new poster notices this and does the same, the steel jaws of the forum do tend to snap down.

Once you're accepted, though, everything's pretty good. Even if the philosophical turf wars get a bit heated occasionally.

Oh, yeah.
We're tight all right :-*
  • #15

After some thought, I posit that the forum is like an oyster bed. If you let it all wash over you, you can watch the changing seasons of the community while barely interacting with it. But if you irritate the members, there's an even chance between two outcomes: either you get yourself spat out, or you finding yourself being enravelled in so many layers of the community that you inevitably pick up a shine.

Interesting that you should bring this up, The Nturtanyr. I originally come from a tight and close-knit community very similar to yours. We haven't always gotten along with each other, but somehow we manage to stick with each other through thick and thin.

The main other community I post on is the CRFH forum, which has evolved over the years. It once was a loud and somewhat chaotic community, similar to the BCB forums of today. Nowadays we're smaller, quieter, and more sedate and thoughtful in our postings. The "old guard" are now mainly only seen on IRC, and they don't talk much about the comic anymore.

As for the BCB forum? It is still in the midst of childhood. It, too, will grow up in time, I expect. We do have our cliques here, but that's the nature of an exuberant and active community. The main rule is to not take things too seriously. Most people who follow that rule will do just fine, wherever or however much they choose to post.

An interesting parable, considering that what makes up these layers is mostly pus and excrement and secretions. ^_^

That said, the forum is... Well, it is not all that tight-knit, really. Not that we are just fleeting or something, but no, I would not call it tight-knit by any standards.

We do have a lot of smaller communities, though, and these definitely have a lot of togetherness. For instance, we have the Skype society, the ragtag RCers, the IRC elite (plus the periphery surrounding them), the roleplaying ruckus, the voicechat venturers, the forumites, the social students, and so on. They are relatively open to each other (not counting the IRC/RC conflict), but there is also a distance between them. And they all have their definite shortcomings when it comes to socialising. :smirk:

Oh, wait, we have also recently acquired the band of BCItes.
  • #24

While you're labelling people, ILB, I'm still trying to get "forumints" accepted as a general term.

If you think RC compares to 4chan, than you are lucky enough to have never been to that cursed site...there is no comparison.
Regardless, I was being sarcastic.
  • #32

@nameless No I don't think they compare. I just meant when people think of 4chan they think of the worst section you could possibly go in which is /b/ or /v/ on a bad day. So what I meant was don't judge the whole forum on the weirdest things on it.

Well Nameless, in our community, we rarely make an offensive comment or bad language. We don't attack people immediately if they come off as an idiot. We just don't act immaturely really. All our discussions have quality messages and arguments, and although we do have our fun and stuff, we don't act stupid.

It's hard to explain really.

But it's how I acquired the use of language and grammar to convey mood, rather than emoticons, images and so on.
