I've noticed that besides cats and dogs, the earlier comics had rabbits as well.

Actually, I have an idea on this one. Much like inner-city kids, they never see the creatures being killed and eaten. Chicken comes from a supermarket. Depressing in a world of talking food? You decide.

Also rabbit would not work well they would be eaten on the spot by both the cat and dog cast. Only certain dogs eat cats and since most of the dog cast are some form of lab were all good with dodging that.

Probably just a non-official name change like what some (if not most) Japanese and Chinese people do.

Not true. Taeshi has, unless I am mistaken, said that Sandy can speak English very well, and her pronunciation of Michael as "Maishul" is just a sort of nickname. You know, somewhat like how Daisy calls him "Mikie". I also beleive he wants it to be that way.

Taeshi did actually say Sandy was Japanese once, but that was probably just a facetious response to the poster above her.
You are right about 'Maishul' being a mispronunciation turned into a nickname.
My friend's wife is named Makiko, however that usually gets shortened to Maki.
Hypothetically, if Sandy had a Japanese name, it might be Sanae (早苗), which might then be anglicized to Sandy.

And one other thing about food in the bcb universe: have we ever seen cow / pig / chicken like creatures? I know that someone eating "steak" was referenced once... but it could be that it was tofu or something. Also, it could be that if these creatures do exit, they aren't sentient like birds, yoshi's and hedgehogs so eating them is ok in their society.
I spend WAY to much time thinking about these things.

I'm a little confused to why Sandy pronounced Mike's name Maishul in the first place. 'sh' doesn't sound like 'k' at all, and it's not as if Japanese can't say 'k'. Or is it just a mishearing.

Sandy probably isn't actually Japanese.
She did mispronounce Mike's name in the beginning, and Mike thought it was cute, so it turned into a pet name.
