Blood Taken Tale (real story!)

Earlier this morning I went to have some blood taken.
I hadn't eaten for 12 hours and calmly waited my turn to be called.
Then I thought of playing a game, I dared myself to get blood taken, look at the entire process and don't move any muscles out of pain/fear/apprehension, whatever.
Then I went in there.

The nurse did her pre-procedures, and came with the needle. I looked straight at it.
Poke. It was in. Yeah, I did it! 8-)

...
But, heck, where was the blood? The nurse shrugged, and changed the vial. Nothing.
Then she pushed the needle further in. I was surprised at it, but remained focused. But no blood came.
The nurse puled it out, and told me she'd have to pierce me again. Oookay, then.

Poke. In again. Where's the friggin blood? She changes the vial 3 times before giving up that spot.
The nurse looks at me frowning, and pierces yet another spot of flesh. That hurt. :/
Poke. But no blood flow.
I ask her if she hadn't missed the spot (I hear that's somewhat common), and she says
"Oh, no, I'm sure I'm in the right place, look:" And pushes the whole bloody needle in my arm. D:

I have no idea how sticking the whole needle would make me understand that she got the spot right. But that really really hurt. ._.
After some vials wasted, she says I'm nervous and because of that I had vasoconstriction.
Ok then. She tells me to calm down that this doesn't hurt that much. Yeah right.

3 more pokes with the needle, she gives up on that arm. I give up on not showing any signs of pain, and hold my holed arm as hard as I can to help with the coagulation.
The nurse gets the equipment and walks around me. Now somewhat apprehensive, I offer my other arm. The nurse carelessly sticks the needle in a very visible vein, and there it is.
Crimson, majestic, liquid. It flows into the vial filling it up in no time. The nurse takes needle off my arm, looks at the vial, and says:
"This blood is too thin, I have to get more..."

I look at her :nope:
She looks at me :D
I look at her :(

Poke. She fills one more vial. By then, I'm white as Lucy's fur, and the nurse's voice starts fading away. hypotension, I have. ;_;
I feel my grip on consciousness slipping away and let go of any effort. My vision is completely burred and I can only see white dots in a black background. I don't pass out, but every strength I have goes to my breathing.
I hear the nurse blabber a lot of things, and catch some things like: "Don't worry" "It's normal" "It'll pass".
I lay there, wasted, waiting for it to pass.

Slowly, I feel the heat coming back to my extremities, but wait for more 5 minutes. When I feel I can, I sit up. The nurse says that I was very nervous and that my low blood pressure got the best of me.
In a nutshell, she called me weak. >:(

Oh well, if she says so.
With my arms hurting like hell, I go out, eat something, and stop in front of my car.
Damn. I have to drive it.

Not a fanfic, LOL.
Happened to me today.
I thought it was fun enough to share with you people =D

Ouch. That must have have hurt.

Not to sound like a jerk, but I never felt that way about getting my blood drawn. I always more interested in how it works, then the fact I have metal in my vein. :)

That, and the fact I get it done so often, it's pretty much routine at this point.

Jesus that sucks. That's the exact reason I can't stand going to the doctor's. I normally don't mind getting blood drawn but who knows what will happen with these people... >:(

Oh, god. That's horrible. XD I'm sorry that happened to you. What were you giving blood for anyway?

Reminds me of the time I got a blood test, than knocked over the vials of blood requiring more blood to be taken...granted that my own falt for being clumsy...
  • #5

I have never given blood because every time I actually go they won't take my blood because my allergies are bad at the time normally.
  • #6

lol my veins are practically squeezing out of my skin as is. nurses love me.

last time I gave blood, though, I also nearly passed out. at that age, my rhr was around 50 bpm and sys/dias was like 90/45 - very susceptible to hypotension.

Oh, I've never had any problems with that. I guess the 12 hours without food + less blood in me + being drilled alive knocked me out ^_^

I had my blood taken for a check up my cardiologist asked. No big deal. ;)
Though I did remember Mr. Meowth's Friends Forever fic while I was seeing them big white dots.

Oh dear, I am sorry to hear that, Lycan. I hope you are all right :x

But yes, you really should eat properly before doing this. Otherwise your blood will be too thin; blood sugar and all that.

I have never had any problems with drawing blood, oddly. Terrified of needles, but all my encounters with nurses and blood tests have gone by without much pain at all.

  • Ask me what I think about Snooths!
Congratulations, you have rendered me scared shitless of ever giving blood.

Oh at least you never had a nurse Pull down your shirt in front of a boy so she could put an ice pack down and then spilled sprite all over yourself in front of the same guy while your mother laughed the entire time at you. :nope:

I have weird things happen to me when I give blood. But everyone should! Most people go, it's over in five minutes and they walk out feeling good about themselves. I personally loath needles and I still give blood at least once a year so go get off your but and give some today!

Reminds me of that thing with the convict on death row who endured tons of needle prods until they finally hit a vein and killed him.
  • #16

Reminds me of that story with the drug abuser on death row, whose each and every vein collapsed when pierced with the lethal injection because of the sheer number of drugs he had taken intravenously. The same thing happened over and over until the point that he was released because it was taken as a sign of divine providence.

also haughlhbl that is a horrifying story jesus christ needles all up in you

That's more disturbing then the explanation.

I might die if that were to happen to me. I'm already rather squeamish when it comes to my own blood as it is :nope:

But, Mr. ILB, the doctor herself said I had to be fasting for 12 hours before it ^_^

Oh, in that case. You should have eaten more before that time, though. Twelve hours to tear on your reserves. ^_^

I'm a nurse and I have to say.... That these things tend to happen.
And yeah, ussually we say that "vasoconstriction thing" to try to seem more professional XD

Anyway, I've never said it. If I cant poke someone correctly, I call in a friend :D

Oh, yeah, guess what.
I took the results to the doctor who asked for the exam (a cardiologist) and it looks like I have high levels of, ahn, whatsthenameofthat?, ahn, pyruvic transaminase, or GPT, which is an enzyme associated with the liver.

I had to get more blood taken, but this time it was quick and (almost) painless ^_^

I hope Mr. Meowth hasn't been peeking in my future to base his fanfic on >_<
