Are Whites Racially Oppressed?

I just read this article on CNN addressing the idea that some white Americans, most noticeably Republicans, Tea Partiers, and Evangelisists, feel like a racial minority in the United States. Personally, I find this a load of bull. White people are still more abundant that ever. Honestly, I think that if they feel that they are the minority, America is doing a great job of being a more diverse society. However, the idea that they are oppressed? Well, if you White folks are done with "White privilege" can we have it? I know some high school minorities who would love to be able to get into college without much difficulty.

Whites? A minority? By no meaning of the word are we a "minority." However, as for the "racially oppressed bit"- that is debatable. The focus in this culture is on towards prejudice towards African-Americans, Muslims, and other racial groups. However, we seem to forget that some of those other groups are racist towards whites as well. You wouldn't believe the number of African-American boys in my school who have implied that I hate them because I'm white, and they're black - and several have outright said that they believe that!

We're all freaken racist. It doesn't really matter from where it comes from and to be honest I think it's really pointless for people to go about going "Oh we're more oppressed than this group/this group is the least oppressed so it's okay if they're oppressed/why does this group complain? They're not as oppressed as this other group/this group is okay to oppress because in the past they were REALLY oppressed/we should be sympathetic that this group oppresses because they were oppressed once and that wasn't cool."
Every race/group/etc has gotten oppressed at least once in the course of history. And it sucks. Regardless of the debate of "who had it least so they shouldn't complain", racism is racism. And racism is bad. So!

Actually, oddly enough the population rates are swapping over so rapidly that white skinned people will become a statistical visible minority in 30-50 years globally.
It's a hardwired genetic tactic to want to be around people who are visibly similar to yourself. Kind of funny how that works, considering in the end everyone is basically the same on a lower level.

Taeshi pretty much hit the nail on the head. All groups of people are racially oppressed at some point.
A good example would be my school, it's 80% Hispanic. Obviously I experience racism on occasion (I'm white), but you know what, so do the Hispanics there. I know one white guy (real asshole) who loves to scream out the N word all the time. All the fucking time. He also loves to accentuate his plight so he can justify his hating of African-Americans. You know the percent of African Americans at my school? It's around 5%. Then most of my friends seem to have some sort of vendetta against Hispanics, as do many other people there. Hell, one of my close friends IS Hispanic and he hates them more then any of them, and I've already mentioned the percentage of Hispanics at my school.
All in all, everyone is going to find a reason to hate someone else. Whether or not they're White, Black, Hispanic, or majority.
The real sad stories are the one's of people who have had to deal with frequent violence and extreme harassment from this type of thing. That's why I follow the motto "Don't hate the people; Hate their culture." Fucking gangbangers. How do they work?
Oh wait, they don't, they're in gangs.

There's one thing about BCB that I've never noticed before - we don't see any racists. Cats hang out with dogs all the time, and nobody seems to notice.

I hate it when people do that, too. I swear, just the other day, I'm walking through the hall at school, and this African-American dude just comes up to me and says, "Hey man, why you hate me?" Keep in mind that I don't KNOW this person, so I'm like "I don't even know you." "Why you hate me? Is cause I'm black, in'nt?" It goes on like this for a while, until I just left. It was weird and hurtful.
When you're done with that, can you make people give me money?

White kids get into college easily because they have generations of wealth and education supporting them. Except the ones who don't have that. They live in trailer parks and have no hope.

You know what I find funny. If you go on youtube there are a handful of videos about people being happy about their white heritage not being racist about it just being like I really like the fact that I'm European and in the comments people are arguing over whether it is ok to be proud of the fact that you are white.

It's funny how people make a big stink about having a scholarship for whites while everyone extols the virtues of a scholarship for only other races or women as an example. Maybe people shouldn't care about race when making decisions and see them for how they act.

Like some of you have said, a lot of different ethnic groups have been (and many continue to be) oppressed. My sister mentioned that article to me yesterday and I just find it silly 'cos I personally find race to be a social construct. I'm only used to identifying race as subspecies..and since we're all humans, we technically don't have any "race" (biologically/zoologically speaking).

These are some lovely people you're defending here ILB, I'd understand if they were an older group. I would just say "Well they've been around for a while/that was a different era, they weren't always this bad." but that is not the case here.

Za? I have to agree with Taeshi on this one. We're all a little racist. I myself am quite white, and have had some annoying thoughts about other races, but that's how everyone's mind works. We all get those bothersome thoughts in the back of our heads that comes from the subconscious. As I grew up, most of the experiences I have had of people of different races weren't exactly pleasant to say the least. So every time I meet a new person of the same descent, my first reaction is a learned response, not one I'd typically use.
So, to put it as bluntly as possible, we're all racist against someone. It's just how far we're willing to let that prejudice go.
P.S. And as for the colleges only hiring "white" people, there are quite a few that hire only "black" or Hispanic people, and are quite proud of it. In fact, many colleges prefer students from China and Japan, because the learning methods there are much stricter than the western countries. So to say most colleges want "white" people is like saying most colleges want "black" people. Of course there are going to be a few, but most like a mish-mash of many races.

I am not defending their views at all, I am defending the people. There is a difference there. I agree with most of this!
EXCEPT THE FIRST SENTENCE WHICH ANGERS ME.
One of my pet peeves is when someone says something about me that's not true... Not simply untrue, but it's opposite!!
(please read the next paragraph completely before getting too bothered by it!)
One of my English classes in high school, I failed, because the teacher was a feminist WHICH IS FINE to a degree... I went into the class expecting a semester of some nice advanced analysis of poetry and literature. What I got was a course about how we can see sexism and racism in action in literature. For an interesting angle like this, I'm usually fine, but the whole discrimination thing just doesn't work for me. It's not because I'm uncomfortable being shown the subject matter, that's not it at all. It's my sense of decency and justice that made me REALLY MAD when getting onto such topics. I hated the course because it made me mad. The idea of people being oppressed or anything because of gender or race, the horrors that have been committed as a result makes me so mad, at people being so stupid and cruel...!!!! So while I may have seemed like a dark racist sexist monster for how bothered I was in that class, it was actually my restrained outrage at the crimes being brought up, and I failed the course because the material just kept flaring up my moral outrage and I ended up being depressed and angry, so I just couldn't do the work. I think I'll write a letter now for that teacher explaining myself...
