So your saying you made some animations?

If so can we see them? :3
  • #2

well I will tell you what I think when I see those animations ;)
  • #3

Oh, you're that guy.
He didn't animate them, he just voiced the comics, and dude, I just want to say this. Although you have a great voice and everything, you really need to find someone else to do this with. You can't have one person voicing the entire thing. Just saying.

Oh yeah I've seen a vid of his... Yeah like sammy said (and I have in the past) You need to have more voices in your arsenal before you are able to do voiced comics. Using just your own voice really doesn't make it sound great =/ especially with a balance of female and male characters (main and sub-main ones at least)

I've seen this on youtube and I'm quite pleased that someone made it.

But the Voice is HORRIBLE, atleast he could've asked some people to read lines from other characters.

Voices are shit try again.

There isn't much else to say except that the voicing isn't all that good.

I think it's already been explained to you quite clearly. As you said before, there's only a number of accents one man can do. The simple answer: find someone to do it with. Perhaps, also, you could take some lessons in vocalisation; you really need to project if you're gonna give a good sense of the drama that is inherent in BCB. You should also invest in some proper recording equipment, because at the moment eighty percent of what I'm hearing is your breathing and other random inteference. Also, perhaps try and learn about these little things called capital letters. They go at the beginning of sentences. Heard of them?

it's difficult to make the impressions. there are only a number of accents one man can do. it's a hard process and i agree the acting isn't good but one must also understand our voices were meant for our own not others.

Basically this, it's not about me not thinking it's how Mike sounds, it's about the fact that they all have the same voice. I know you can't do much about it, but it's out there.

movies based on books. if anyone has ever seen a movie AFTER reading the whole book and (if there is) series you will almost always say "this was bad" that's because of the portrayal. one can read a story one way and another can read it differently. it is human nature to believe even for a second that "I" (meaning self) is always better and always right. so when you saw it maybe you thought sub-consciously "this isn't how i thought it would be" making a bad impression that rots in your brain every time, like listening to a new song remade by an artist you don't know and is said in a totally different way.

Like I said, none of this is why I said it was bad. Though I will be honest with you and say I didn't like Mike's voice (I'll just list his voice as the only one, since they all sound alike) This does not however mean I'm saying it's bad solely for that reason, since that doesn't really affect my opinion of it since everyone has different opinions yadda yadda.

maybe i'm wrong, maybe i do suck but here's a question for you:could you do this? could you devote your freetime to editting, recording, then redoing because of mistakes and background noises. i'm not gonna say that if you CAN do this then do it already and shut up, but if you can then help me. i have already done about 3 other videos that i will publish periodically and any help would be great.

I couldn't do this project as a whole on my own no, since it requires many people, which was sammy's point, but I have heard I do a pretty good Mike so I could do that. But if you couldn't do it at first, why couldn't you have asked for people around here, I mean there is already an audio comic thread recruiting, you could have had something similar.

Do you want my honest opinion? I don't mean to be harsh like this, but I'd discontinue the thing. At least until you get the help you need, and if you are unable to get that, discontinue it permanently. Again, not trying to be harsh, but that's my honest opinion.
  • #17

Alrighty, I'll come out of creepy lurker mode for this one. You should feel most honored! It's constructive criticism time!

If you really have the drive to do this project, then I encourage you to go for it. Only... please go for it the right way. I understand that not everyone is going to have hundreds of voices they can do, but the peanut gallery is right. Don't force slight modifications and call it a brand new tone. You need to hold auditions. There are voice acting forums where amateurs try to build up their portfolio you can refer to. There is even the option of posting video requests for auditions via your youtube account. There are too many characters for you to effectively and convincingly pull off here so reach out to others.

I could tell that you were trying very hard to give voices to other characters, but something I noticed in your video and in your posting here that you are calling these voices 'accents'. An accent can be a fun feature and bring a lot to a character, but it does NOT constitute a new voice. You can tell when the same person is speaking with a different accent, it does little to the tone and timbre and pitch of their voice. Those are the sort of things you should be working on. You can start with imitation. Write down actors/characters/animals (I kid you not) that you can imitate accurately. Then add to your list different character archetypes that you would be able to get work for or even just want to play (the hero, the shy one, the short tempered one, etc). Then you will want to get some material, at least a paragraph long, for each of these archetypes and practice them until you feel your voice can reflect the traits and personality of the monologue's narrator. Don't let your imitations go to waste either. Keep practicing those with lines you know and love. Remember to keep your list as diverse and varied as possible. If you want references, look up other voice actors' audition reels or the "man of many voices" videos on youtube.

Next... I hate to say this, but you really do need to brush up on some basic acting protocol. Voice work is awesome as it allows you to record in the comfort of your own home in some cozy pj's, but do not, I repeat, DO NOT simply sit down and READ your script. That is a huge no-no. I could hear it in your voice that you were just looking at the words. That is not what an actor does. You need to read it sans recording. Then read it again. And again. And again. Just because this is an amateur project, doesn't mean you shouldn't put forth the time and effort into it. You need to have the script memorized so you don't fall victim to the awkward pauses of a person who's brain is trying to catch up to their mouth and the weird tone shifts and confused inflections of someone that is unsure of where the dialogue is headed. It makes it sound stiff and fake. When you are doing any kind of voice recording like this you need to be on your feet. You have to move around, use your body. Even if your audience can't see the movement, we can definitely hear it. This is especially important when you have static pictures. The video itself cannot portray motion so its all on you.

Also... diction, darlin'. You mumble when the text goes too fast. While it can be a valid stylistic choice for a character, it seems to be across the board. Invest in doing some awkward vocal exercises. Like tongue twisters. Learn which sounds should bleed into others and which need to be emphasized to be heard.

As for the video itself, there are ways to make a comic read through compelling. You need to employ some methods of old radio shows! Don't be afraid to add sound effects or mood music. However you do need some FANTASTIC sound recording/editing software. If you want to see a good example of a web-comic radio drama done well, look up that... one... person's Lackadaisy Cats work on youtube. He also went out and had people audition for roles and just showed pictures of the comic as the visual aspect of the videos and they were all marvelously compelling.

Don't take the long tirade here as a discouragement. You do have some groundwork, but a mere desire to do it will not make this project a success. If you're serious about it, as well you should be as you ARE using somebody else's work as source material and thus wish to pay deference it, you need to put in the time and the energy to make it work right. Taeshi has to have spent countless hours on BCB, you need to respect that if you wish to use it for your own project. If you aren't willing to do that, then just drop it and write your own scripts to record.

I hope you found this helpful and not at all insulting as it was not intended to be. :-*

TL;DR: Obnoxiously detailed accounts on how to improve one's own voice work that is utterly unimportant to anyone uninterested in the subject.

Ok. This is very clearly bad. That much is clear. What specifically is bad about it? Well, let's break it down a bit...

Acting:
The voice acting itself is of a very low standard. I'm not talking about whether or not you 'got the voices right', etc. What I AM saying, is that the performance itself is poor. Most of your lines are all but mumbled, and there is absolutely zero enthusiasm in any of your delivery. Simply put? It's boring to listen to. A good chunk of the characters also end up sounding far to similar in both tone and accent. An example of this is in episode 15 where Mike & Tess are talking, and it is incredibly hard to distinguish between the two.

How can you fix this? Put some oomph into it! You don't sound like you even really CARE about the project at this point, and it makes us really not give a damn either. We want to hear a performance, not a shy kid mumbling.

Now, yes. I WILL say that I think you're pretty off the mark with the voices. This isn't so much an opinion thing, as it is a tonal thing. I feel like you're performing for an over the top cartoon, ala "Bugs Bunny", not a teenage dramedy. If you want a really good example of somebody who does this very idea of yours well, look at the Watchmen Motion Comic. It's one man reading out the comic, but he does it the right way, and is entertaining as a result. (Source)

Production:
You say that you spend a large amount of time on this, recording and editing and what not. But in all honesty, it really doesn't feel like you do. In earlier episodes, you trip over your words several times, which indicates that you did not edit it at all. Now, later episodes seem to be an improvement on this, which is proof that you ARE willing to fix your methods. One massive thing I will tell you, is that you need real sound effects. You need background ambience and music. And you really SHOULD edit the images to reveal text as it's spoken (ie, reveal it speech bubble by speech bubble). A very good example of this attention to detail in the post production is the voice acted version of the Hiimdaisy Persona 4 comic. It takes sound effects and music from the game, and edits the panels together in a really fluid way that gives it a very animated feel. (Source)

Now, I can't expect you to just automatically make something to this level. I also understand that the voice acting in it is of very high quality, and performed by several actors, but THIS is what you should be striving for in terms of the post production. THIS is what will get you noticed.

If you can address these issues, and practice your acting to try and extend the range of voices you can perform, you may actually make this a worthwhile endeavor. But as it stands, it's nothing more than a silly little project that, in all honesty, nobody will care about.

EDIT:
A lot of people are suggesting that you try and get a cast together and do it as a full on production. I feel like this would be a bad idea, as there is already such a project being made by another group. I feel like you would be better off perfecting the "One Man Reading" technique.

Here is a webcomic that was able to do some voice overs on their comic. It was really well done.

If we're just doing voices, why not just make a radio show, like the fans for Slightly Damned did?

well, if you are willing there is although an audiocomic project done by Grass. Maybe you should contact him, because afterall, you have done a good job making and editing the videos.

And it is a bad idea to put your email in a public forum. Just telling :smirk:

Why exactly is it so hard for you to find some voice actors? Don't you have some friends that could help from school or something? (Unless your embarrased about people finding out about this webcomic.)

It's honestly not that hard to find voice actors. There's hundreds of people who want to VA, but don't have any cred yet. Everyone starts somewhere. If you really want to make this a big thing with multiple actors, then just go find some?

Start there. Hell, it took me 1 google search and bang. Huge voice acting community.

I... I don't even know where to begin with that list hahahaha.

I mean... Really? Aliens Exist by Blink182? It's about aliens. Literally. Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind? It's about excessive drug abuse and rampant sex. Bathwater by No Doubt? A song about a pregnant woman still in love with the man who left her after impregnating her. The Boys of Summer by The Ataris? About a boy who still pines after the town bike, despite knowing that she'll always sleep around with the other surfers.

I just question if you've actually thought about this list ^^;

Incidentally, When You Say Nothing At All is by Ronan Keating, not Boyzone. He wrote and recorded it after he'd gone solo from the band.

Also, Just Another Day In Paradise is by Phil Vassar. Marty Dread's version is a cover. Though, why you'd want to use a song that's about how awesome it is that Phil Vassar lives on a paradise island for a BCB song is somewhat beyond me.

Clean up the intro quality, don't make it so boring to watch, and try and find some gems, not copy/paste alternative blech.

Other than that, it's hilarious. You sir have balls of copper.

Thanks.... THANKS FOR NOT SINGING!!!!

It Amazil, few things:

1st) put a pause in the change of chapters. It has to be evident that you changed chapter, if not it gets confused.

2nd) You have done one of the most difficult: The videos. I really, REALLY recommend you to start over again. Although you put a lot of effort in the videos (what it's worth of mention),the voices really, REALLY suck. If I was you, I will do a serious research for voiceactors and start over again the audiocomic.

3rd) The intro still... stinks. I'm sorry, but a nice song and a few draws made by you will not improve it.

THere is a great difference between doing the voiceacting you alone, or with more people. Look at that video, hear to the voices, and enjoy a well done audiocomic.

Really, I watched some of your videos coz I respect what you are trying to do. But they are really bad. Search more voiceactors, and start the audiocomic again from the start. THEN it will be a little better.

If you try to do all in a hurry, you will do something really bad. It's not the same, but, How many times you think I wrote, erased, and wrote again each chapter of my fanfict? Or each page of the novel I am writing?

Anyway, do as you want.
