BCBCon 2011 Event Planning Thread
We have THURSDAY through SUNDAY. Realistically SUNDAY EVENING and THURSDAY MORNING are out, as people will be going/leaving during that time. This leaves us 3 evenings, 3 mornings, and 4 afternoons. i know some people are showing up on wednesday and crashing at my place! ace and i will be playing warhammer 40k and there will be misc video games / card games, etc.
one morning/afternoon combo can be dedicated to the MUSEUM OF SCIENCE / DUCK BOAT TOURS. the duck boats leave from the MOS, so it makes sense to combine them. the visiting exhibit for july is "DINOSAURS: ANCIENT FOSSILS, NEW DISCOVERIES". there is also the lightning show for free. a small extra fee opens up the IMAX theatre, the most advanced planetarium on the east coast, and the butterfly garden. keep in mind the planetarium also has music and laser shows in evenings! we may want to go to the planetarium then instead.
people expressed interest in a RED SOX GAME. they are playing against baltimore every day during that time, and that will probably take up the whole afternoon.
those 21 AND UP have expressed a desire to go BAR-HOPPING one evening. sorry kids, adults only in america.
i am currently looking into possible CONCERTS for the evening one night. This is still up in the air. LASER TAG was also suggested.
Boston has a lot of HISTORY and is a very good WALKING TOWN. Keep in mind the temperature will be around the mid-80s during the summer. there are both free and paid tours of boston you can do walking around.
I know some people wanted to possibily go to some kind of paranormal thing! the trains ($5 a way, about) go to SALEM, the site of the SALEM WITCH TRIALS. there is paranormal and history stuff there, but it's mostly a tourist attraction (oooh! get your photo taken with a GHOST), but there's also the PEABODY-ESSEX MUSEUM there, which has some nifty arty things. back in boston there's the MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS.
FOR THOSE WHO ARE ACTUALLY GOING, what do you want to do? ideas? opinions?
(please don't use this thread to bitch about how you can't go or ask what BCBcon is, there's a stickied thread for that. this is for event planning only.)

Laser tag is also a great idea and I will slaughter you all to death and stuff. Meanwhile, on the subject of bar hopping, I certainly hope you will not get yourselves absolutely wasted because I will laugh so very hard in your faces and do all in my power to get you to vomit because alcohol is poison. Also, art is boring as fuck.
I've also planned for a friend and I (Gamey~) to go out around town by ourselves or with the group say if we go shopping, because Gameking and I will be searching for a CD store or the equivalent and will be shopping for the great sounds of the times past, maybe even look for a vintage item store or something. It would be nice for us to plan a group shopping trip or something, otherwise the two of us will simply spend the afternoon together shopping for Oldies and other vintage items.

Also seeing museums and historical sights like Salem sounds like a blast, although I'm not a huge art guy personally. I just get impressed and then pfft. No massive interest. Same with a concert, unless I knew the group well enough.
I don't have any interest in seeing a baseball game, at all. I mean, I'll go and probably enjoy myself, but honestly? There are other things to do in Boston.
Also hells yea, oldies shopping! The only store I could spend more time in is most likely a video game place, for obvious reasons. But more realistically, spending an afternoon just kind of walking around a market of somekind would be nice.

fuck d&b.
funspot has kind of fallen into disrepair the last time i saw it, but it's relatively easy to get to, provided we had enough cars. it's about a 45 minute drive.
for those that don't know, it's basically a 3-story chuck-e-cheese kind of place. they used to have one of the two ridge racer cars, and they may still have the big 8-player space shooter. dunno. it's been many moons since i've been there. they have a lot of ddr/beatmania/etc machines.

I was talking about the fact that it is the largest collection of classic arcade machines available for public use in America, and also the American Classic Arcade Museum. That made me excited. Also the fact that it was the place where Billy Mitchell set the first recorded perfect score at Pacman in 1999 on July 3rd, taking just over 6 hours! Also goddamn that's a lot of nerd in the preceding block of text!
But really, I'd be more than willing to take a 45 minute car ride over to play there. Well worth it for anyone who loves classic arcade cabinets.

Anyways, I like the plan, Space. I'd like to get a chance to do some shopping, though. Is there some huge mall we could go to maybe?

depends on what kind of shopping you want!
for all-around mall, there's burlington, but that's a drive, maybe a bus?
in-boston there's kind of open-air malls of all sorts of stores, from chains to local flavor kind of clothing stores. that would all be at the fanuel hall marketplace.

I feel like the science museums should be a must, they seem pretty 'interactive' and interesting. I'm also quite interested in walking around and taking in the history of Boston and such, whether that be casual walking around with the group or going on tours and such. If we could so to Salem or do some type of paranormal/ghost hunt I would die of happiness because that is where it is at for me, haha. Shopping around and just finding interesting places, like I said, I am content with as long as we are out and about and we can all easily interact. I'm less interested in the baseball game, but not opposed at all if the majority want to go. Concerts I'm not leaning towards to at all since they seem like something that can really happen anywhere and don't seem like it'd be an enjoyable large group experience?
If we go to an arcade I will be lost haha HOW DO I PLAY THIS YOU GUYS :-[[[?!?!

Museum= Good times for nerds
Bar Hopping= We will have plasmids
Okay! So Thursday evening could be a good day for meet and greet and have a great dinner and congeal etc. etc. Friday would be a good day for the museum I bet. That evening has many many many choices afterwards, I'd suggest barhopping then, but that means that saturday some people may be incapacitated. So, I'd suggest saturday evening for that although I am loathe to say so because I'll have to leave early sunday morning
Oh, yeah, saturday morning/afternoon... yeah I don't know at the moment

i'm pretty much intent on us going to the MOS. I believe everyone will find something they like there.
the concert is still very much nebulous; it's not at all a definite thing right now, but assuming certain things fall into place, i believe everyone will want to go.
something to keep in mind is a lot less trains run on the weekend! if we wanted to go to salem, Friday may be the best day. shopping/general walking around i think is a great thing for thursday.

warhammer is wednesday, ace :3
i don't know when people will be coming in thursday! i think plans for thursday should remain fluid until we know more definite flight plans.
i figure laser tag is a great thing because it will allow everyone to get their passive forum rage out of the way.

Going to actually see one in person involves sitting in uncomfortable seats, in the heat, and unable to really see very well what's going on.
There is really no problem with people splitting up. Perhaps while one group goes to see the Sox the other goes up to the arcade?

I once saw the Boston Symphony Orchestra a little while back, impressive performance (but I was too young to appreciate it at all). You guys should look into things that you normally wouldn't go to in your respective hometowns/countries. You can go anywhere to play in an arcade, but you can only go to one place to see the Boston Red Sox (albeit I hate baseball, but I still enjoy being at a stadium for any sport).
You guys should check to see if there is a native Bostonian here, because like Chicago and any other major city, there is much more to be done (and done for free!). Hell, I went on a road trip with 4 other people to New York City and spent only around $300ish for an entire half-month (half of it was spent on food/gas).
Edit: oops, one thing I can remember about boston: faneuil hall marketplace/mall/tourist trap. For when you guys end up shopping. I can only remember the buskers that played music outside, but w/e.

I'm really just trying to toss out ideas. The arcade was suggested because it does have some unique stuff there. From someone who's been to a Sox game, trust me. They're a lot better at home.
In response to "things you can do anywhere", you're still interacting with people whatever you're doing! I personally believe we'd all have more fun with some beanbags, and all head to my place, and I just show the sox game on my projector. But if people want to go sit in the heat and pay for overexpensive beer and hot dogs, we can. We'll all be tired and leave during the 7th inning anyway. Baseball will also probably be the most expensive part of the trip! Looking at which tickets are available RIGHT NOW, the cheapest section that has tickets available for everyone is $50 a ticket. The cheapest. If we miss out on that, the next up available section is $54/each, and so on.
Baseball will be expensive, and I honestly believe most people won't enjoy it.
I have been getting restaurant recommendations! Expect some of the cooler stuff. I'd like everyone to go to Hilltop Steakhouse (it used to be the most popular restaurant in the US), but that would require cars. Once the numbers are more final, I'll be getting dietary restrictions from folks, so I can plan.

i think it is fair for people to not want to attend events due to money expenditure. in that case, it would fall to either allowing them to not go (technically no one has jurisdiction over what anyone does or doesn't do), or help fund their activity.

For the plans in general, if you could try to get a cost for each venue/idea in Boston Space, and any potential group discounts we can possibly get it will be easier to figure out a general idea of whats preferred. Personally costs isn't an issue, but we do want to have a rough idea so were not forced to make decisions on the spot due to monetary reasons.
As for what I'd like to do, Giant group of people chilling at a park eating some lunch with some ultimate frisbee / other random games during one of the days. Gotta enjoy the weather while were all together.
Oh, and if we can figure out exactly how many people will be arriving on Wednesday as opposed to Thursday, we can try to plan something out for the night / see if any extra arrangements can be made for an extra day at the hotel with 2 groups. I know Ace and one other will be in early and crashing at Spacey's, and myself and Susan will most likely have a hotel room for Wednesday.

the problem is once you break up groups, you also break up responsibility - you have to make sure someone in each group at least knows how to get back to the hotel, for example.
costs - i can try to get some estimates. i believe a friend of mine has a MoS membership, so that should help with getting a discount on the tickets.
boston does have parks, right on the bay! these will be easy to get to from where we are staying.
keep in mind i live at the end of the subway. my current understanding is there will be about 3 people at my place - this maximizes my ability to drive anyone around.
