HECK. YES.

A dedicated server would be the best thing ever!
  • #2

I would love this! Except the grievers would eventually take over....
  • #3

Well you see, that's why I would implement WorldGuard, and a few other plugins, to keep those nasty greifers away ;)
  • #4

Perfect!
  • #5

I do like this idea very much.
  • #6

This would be my salvation. Are you suggesting that it's you who will run it?
  • #7

oh god this would be epiiccccccccc...
  • #8

If it's going to be a private server I don't think it would need very many admin mods/plugins.
  • #9

So did this ever take off?

  • #12

I'm just jestin. I don't play minecraft.
Not paying money for that game.
If it was free, I'd probably play. :O
Anyone got a beta/demo link?
  • #13

You can play .30 for free. Keep in mind though, the beta (that you pay for) is at 1.5

I think this is a good idea, considering that half the IRC play's minecraft
  • #15

I haven't played in about 2 months, so if this happens it will convince me to play again.

Well that's a bit harsh.

I think he's well within his rights to ask for a demo before he commits to paying for it. (The SP demo is terrible though, it is nothing like the current game)

Myself, I didn't even remotely get interested in it until I saw a YouTube video of how the mining works, and thought "That's pretty cool" to myself.

So, I'd suggest watching videos on YouTube of people just playing, or better yet, watch some Livestreams.

If you do choose to pay, it is 15 Euros atm, with the 25% discount. That equals $21.76 USD.

Also, when in case you didn't get it when I said you asking for a link to beta made me smile, it's because the entire game, the entire time it's been out, has been in alpha or beta. It's not finished yet. And the programmer even added a clause when you buy it saying he many never finish it.

Any regular PC Gamer readers should find a demo version of the 'proper' game attached to the latest cover. Complete with PC-Gamer branded cows.

The 'demo'-ness comes from the fact that each created world locks itself after 90 minutes, but that's still a nice long time to find out whether the adventure/creation blend works for you. :)

You know, there WAS a dedicated server run by Susan when this board first started. And before that, SpaceMouse ran a free Minecraft server (the shitty version). Don't really know what happened to Susan's, but Spacey these days runs a private server for friends, so I don't think he'll be running another BCB one due to the strain on his net.

Moving this to Recess as it doesn't really belong in Creative Arts.
  • #22

Would've this ever happen? If not I'm thinking on repairing my old computer to use it as a dedicated server 24h. But I don't really know how.to run a server.

I have several friends who regularly run dedicated servers for TF2 and other things. I'll ask them to tech me how to run a one, I have two extra computers that I could use as servers. Course this is all speculative, but if enough people are ACTUALLY willing on playing and modulating to keep the server(s) populated this theory could get off the ground.

  • #25

Yah i just noticed that... WEIRD
  • #26

Forgot to look this back up after I got it. I would be all kinds of interested in this.

@ Draix - You can play Creative mode for free. You have unlimited materials to do whatever you want. But Survival is way better. It makes the completion of your giant golden penis so much more meaningful.
  • #27

I agree, I also prefer a survival server. Creative server is simply too easy.

  • #29

Creative is boring to me.
  • #30

apparently, we need both!

jsut a thought
  • #31

Good News Everybody, my friends are currently teaching me the technical side of server maintenance and programing... but atm I'm strapped for cash so upgrading my extra pc's to handle the extra traffic is a no go, atm.
  • #32

Why do you need to know programming if you want to host a server?

This.

1. Buy a dedicated server.
2. Install Minecraft_server.exe on it.
3. Configure it a bit in the server_PROPERTIES file.
4. Pick which mods (if any) you want, decide on whitelist or not, and pick a few people to be ops (Basically, admins) so they can help watch over the server.
5. Pick a server administration program for extra help (and various goodies, like IRC integration, like Zicore's Minecraft Administration [ZMA]) if you want to. No real need to though, as you can pretty much do all the basic required stuff via the default console.

Total programming/coding language required for all that? 0.

If my ISP didn't have a laughable upload bandwidth, I could host a server immediately, either via Hamachi or just direct IP. (Direct IP would take more work for me, the way I have my laptop set up :/)

Not sure why.

.exe = application.

You get it from minecraft.net

So. Enlighten me.

EDIT: Okay, so there's .jar too. But I use an .exe file.

Because anything with the extension .exe is likely to be a Windows PE binary.

Deduce further.

I wonder what upload speed is needed... I have 600/300 KBs worldwide, 1700/1000 KBs within the country.

I'm going to assume something to do with a dedicated server's OS.

I would not know, as I've never paid for/used one.

Would one use Linux on it?

Keep in mind, my entire post was used in reference to him hosting from his own PC, and I just made the assumption that there are servers out there that use Windows.

Or, you could continue to be a bit of an ass about it.

That too.
  • #39

Windows Server isn't exactly something you'd find in your local computer equipment store. Or whatever. Linux is nice, stable and doesn't need a GUI, all of which are advantages, at least on computers underpowered to be proper servers. Not to say Windows isn't stable, but I've had it crash more than any Linux ever.

Apart from that one computer that crashed at random on any OS I ever put on it. I think it might've been the GPU overheating, though.

ohh, DO I have some stories on GPU and CPU overheating fiascos, haha oh how I love my current heatsink(s).
  • #41

I'm not sure if this is what was being implied, but you don't need server OS software to run a Minecraft server. WindowsXP or Windows 7 works just fine. An on-board graphics card in the host machine is all you need, as there is no world-rendering taking place. A simple desktop PC with enough RAM and CPU speed could serve as a MC server.

My roommates and I are fixing to take the PC we have downstairs and throw another mobo in it, another stick of RAM, and then set it up as a private MC server.
  • #42

Yeah, resurrection and all that but:

Also make sure you have a good upload speed. I can't host purely because of upload speed. (Unless it's 1 or 2 people, MAX)

I like the sound of this, if only we could do this for games like l4d and tf2.
  • #44

Hey everyone, sorry about not posting for a while, I've been busy, and to be honest, i kinda forgot about this thread. But anyway, I've been thinking about this, and I'm going to try taking my old computer, stripping it down to the essentials, and setting that up as the server. How does that sound?
  • #45

I would totally play on this. World guard is a must. City, modern, Maybe an econ mod. and strict build rules. probably turn off the monsters.
  • #46

If I did this, I'd want it to be at least a bit survival, but World Guard is a good idea for a spawn area. I would definitely want to have a collaboritive build of a city.
  • #47

I only play Vanilla unless there's a good reason not to.
(Admin mods I tolerate to some extent, the server I usually play on only uses VanillaWrapper to show a MOTD and expose /list to all players and such)
  • #48

Well I'd keep it pretty vanilla, I'd just have at the most a few admin tools, and a small safe area for new spawners. Other than that, it'll be completely normal.
  • #49

On the other hand a server with an economy mod of sorts and maybe some class system would be awesome.

But I can't be bothered to check how bukkit mods work and see if I could do that myself.
