Aww, poor Abbey. For how long will he be plagued by the shadows of his Father and the past that comes with it? Hopefully, after this chapter, he’ll feel a little better about everything :D

A bit of closure really helps when it comes to stuff like this. Just really hope his mother is okay. Starting to doubt it though. D:

Jeez… So, just to recap: Abby told his mom that his dad was cheating on her. Abby’s mom confronts his dad over it, and then abbys dad starts to beat Abby’s mom, and in this first instance it appears to be implied that he hit her over the head with a lamp. The abuse continues, and all the while, Abby blames himself for his mom being abused, because he alerted her to the fact that his dad was cheating on her?
Is this correct?
Because if it is, I consider that one focked up childhood.

Well, I see where Abby got his awesome, huge, flat ears from.

Sorta sad that he looks so much like his dad. He must hate that as much as he hates being named after him. ._.

Eemia February 24, 2012, 12:12 AM EST.

Comment ID #210297

Alright, well the beatings and constant disrespect were tolerable because she had some good memories of him. But when you add CHEATING to the mix…Well all those black eyes and broken wrists suddenly carry a bit more weight don’t they? She’s gonna get hurt more too. Not happy about that. At least she stood up to him in the end. Though a more roundabout approach may have ended a bit better for her…
And damn it kills me to see how much this affected Abbey. He’s a good kid. Has strong morals, convictions, and a damn decent attitude. Just inherited a lot of problems that he may not have been ready to shoulder. Especially with having to care for his sister so much over the years. I have every hope that he’ll be ok in the long run though, even if the one thing he got from his father was his temper.

I get that the mom can tolerate being beat but cheating ya she’s going to confront him. I just hope she is alive in the end. I mean there in the car driving home. Something is up. I nv liked abby but i guess u gotta get to know someone before u can like them. I get him, he just wasn’t my favorite by far. That and i found him entering the gang completly out of nowhere. Well good luck kiddo. 4 the love of teshie don’t let abby ever beat up on my Daisy ;_;

Comment ID #210330

I had a feeling Abbey’s statement proving Abe is a cheater ended in violence due to a certain manchild’s incapacity or unwillingness to answer for himself. I bet he didn’t think his wife “deserved” to justifiably call him out about the affair. If their kitchen was like mine, there were many stabbing implements to use. She would know exactly what cut best as the cook. Illegal? Yes. Deserved? Oh yeah. Might qualify merely as self-defense, by a battered wife in a moment of being pushed too far. Correct me if I’m wrong, but even if she was doing time, it wouldn’t be a lot of it.

Comment ID #210337

I’ve known some amazing people that have come from horrible situations, some so much worse than this even.. Funny part is, they’re the ones who, even among the rest of everyone with the perfect lives, became the people to look up to, the people to admire, the people with general goodness and love in their hearts, even though life, from a young age, showed them nothing but hate and cruelty. If they could make it, I have every confidence in Abbey.

Rii February 24, 2012, 3:07 AM EST.

Comment ID #210338

@elinn: We all tolerate someone who has major bad qualities because their good usually outnumber the bad e.g. one of my friends repeatedly tells me the same things for a few days which irritates me and I tolerate it because I know he is a loyal friend (unlike my friends for most of high school that just up and left suddenly as one went to Drama Group, one went to another group of friends and one just left because we aren’t that close), always willing to talk about anything and he came to sit with me when no one else would. However if I found out he tortured animals (he doesn’t) then it would be like all of those disappeared and I would confront him. Seriously bad events let anger take over and pushes the common sense to the back of your mind.

Moogle February 24, 2012, 3:14 AM EST.

Comment ID #210339

What I don’t get is how a person as sweet as Abbey’s mum could put up with such torture. What does Abbey’s dad even think of himself?! Because a lamp to the head solves everything? -_-
Poor Abbey, he had a lot of growing up to do at his age.
Luckily he came out a better person (inheriting the temper, but it’s much more rational than his dad’s).
It’s a good thing people like Daisy and Janet are there for him and Molly.
Hope his mum’s alright : /

Meiko February 24, 2012, 3:16 AM EST.

Comment ID #210340

…Did she find his mom’s grave?

No, that doesn’t make much sense in the context…but that’s where I went. :D

Regardless, still hoping for a happy ending. I’m not sure why I bother, considering the comic I’ve come to love has very few of those, yet I still keep hoping.

Comment ID #210350

Abbey played a part in that incident, however, this is not entirely his fault.

Summarising the past:
Abbey sees his father’s car in front of Cynthia’s house, is that correct?
Abbey answers his mother’s question at home by vaguely telling her that his father was cheating on his mother.
She then confronted her husband and he then, out of anger and due to him being impatient, hits her on the head with a lamp. Poor la- I mean, Abbey’s mom ._.

I keep thinking back after I read that comment saying they thought Abbey’s mom was pregnant and how usually beat children and wives are really skinny, and I highly doubt she was just fat…

Since I’m starting to think she IS pregnant, I’m going to go out on a limb here and take a guess that she IS pregnant, and maybe had a miss-carriage after the beating in this page’s flash back.

Maybe that’s why Abbey is very protective of his sister..?

I think it’s more along the lines of: Abbey’s dad was already abusing his mom. Abbey tells his mom about the cheating, and Abbey’s mom confronts her husband over it. I assume then would be what we saw earlier “She’s still breathing, let’s leave the kids with her and go” or something like that. And that’s why Abbey blames himself for everything.

And, I agree… She does seem pregnant…

Paw February 24, 2012, 11:29 AM EST.

Comment ID #210373

So that’s what happened. I think a better approach would have been to gather up the kids and her belongings and just left while he was away. Would have been better for everyone. I just hope that the wife beater got what he deserved. Arrested by the police, the media covering the trail (so that everyone knows about him and he feels ashamed) flowed by jail time.. >:C
I hope Abbi Gets some closure in this chapter. :(

Considering this, the only thing I wonder is why don’t they get a divorce? I never really liked the Dad; But this takes it way too far. First of all, (by my assumption), he’s obviously going to hit her somewhere with the lamp. I say it’s either going to be the arm or the belly, because in previous terms of the chapter, she has a bandage wrapped around her elbow. The belly isn’t so reasonable, saying that I think she looks pregnant..

Wonder if Abe permanently hurt her, Wonder if she is dead. If she isn’t, wonder if she’s a vegetable. Wonder why Jessica isn’t comforting a broken Lucy, winning her over sincerely while getting Lucy time. Delicious , delicious Lucy time. :P

*pats on head* there, there, it’s okay man.

Jesus christ taeshi, i’m sorry, but i can’t keep silent on this one and it’s going to be a long one. Curtisimo is die hard fan, to the point of getting excited when his favorite writer/artist recognizes one of his comments (whether or not you actually picked his comment is besides the point, it’s what he percieved). But you bash him and tear him down when he gets a bit excited about something, you even threaten to ban him for his excitement. That’s messed up.

Posters and commenters like him are what make posting media online worthwhile. Why, because (and you should know this well) you spend 90% of the time sorting through homicidally annoying trolls and sometimes downright idiotic comments to find those few gems that either help you or just outright make you feel good about what you are doing.

i know this from personal experience, i post multiple forms of media online and honestly i get infuriated to the point of wanting to quit when i have to read through the trolls and immature kids, but then i find that one commenter or poster whom my work has given them a bit of joy and it helps me to perservere and keep writing/drawing/filming.

Bash the trolls all you want, but don’t attack a guy just because he likes your comic to the point of manic excitment if he/she (from his/her perception) is recognized by you. Also since i know you will probably ban me for this tirade, i will still close with this. if you keep attacking your true/die hard fans, just because they “annoy” you, you’re going to lose readers.

Strider and Derp: I have expressed multiple times how irritating it is when people make new posts to make a big deal about getting first, or make a post saying “FIRST” and not getting first and making a second comment all “whoops!!!”, which is why this starred section was implemented.

And Strider, I have had conflicts with Curtisimo before. I have told him in the past that he has been irritating for the most part and I have gotten plenty of complaints about him from other fans. Nonetheless, I don’t ban if someone is “annoying” or “outspoken.” So thanks for the wild assumption that I would ban based on getting excited over a comment.

What is wrong with being silently happy about getting starred? You didn’t see the other starred people make a big deal about it and **** up the comment thread. Die-hard fan or not, it ***** up the comments and is incredibly irritating. I’ve gotten complaints about the comments section being a cesspool, and I think up until now I have been very forgiving over shitposts. I’m over it. Deal with it.

The original comment was fine and I think it woulda been worth getting starred, adding another comment to make note of it is just going to encourage other people doing the same. When people shouldn’t be putting attention to it. It’s the same desire as getting first. It’s annoying, people should just talk about the comic.

If he wants to be social and fool around and do whatever he wants, he should join the IRC. Different mediums for different things. This is about commenting on the page. It’s always been that way.

Derp: I wish you read my initial post, because I did heavily explain what is wrong with making a response to getting starred. It’s the same as people who try to get first, instead of encouraging comments with actual quality to it, it encourages “Oh hey i got starred!”, “Oh great, I got first!” “Oh no I didn’t get first!” and that is a load of nonsense and craps up the comments section.

Unfortunately for you, this isn’t your comment section to manage. It’s mine, and I find that kind of behaviour irritating. Sorry, but them’s the breaks. This might be open to fans to comment, but it is ultimately my site and I am giving you guys this opportunity to comment. I could very well just disable comments and not allow anyone to give feedback, but I choose not to. So don’t act like I’m not catering to you guys.

People have complained about Curtisimo in the past, I have gotten messages on other formats like IRC or Skype telling me how he’s not funny and is trying to act like an internet comedian and failing miserably in the comments section. And I have warned him in the past due to his antics during the time BCB was updating maybe an hour or so late. I apologise if you have a poor sense of humour to find him hilarious, but other people don’t, including myself, and it would be better if the comments section had more quality post than nonsense and distractors.

Taeshi February 26, 2012, 8:07 AM EST.

I try to word things like the comment guidelines carefully, Derp. The word “interesting” in “Be interesting” is designed to get people thinking about whether or not what they are saying is interesting to anybody but themselves.

Curtiswhatevermo has had a consistent habit of being self-absorbed and boring. From the one-man-internet-standup routines to the unnecessary attempts to write a signature to the “woohoo I got a star” post, he has sucked up attention for no other reason than to please himself.

Veronica has the right to say “this is my comment section so **** off”, but it doesn’t even have to get to that point. He posted against the guidelines, and he was warned for that reason.

Wow. Just wow. I really apreciate what you guys are doing, but it’s unwanted. I’ve already apologised in a previous comment, and I’ve sent a multi-paragraph apology Email to @taeshi. I can’t believe you guys are sticking up for me like this, (and I mean that in the good way) but just stop. I was acting stupid, and I’ll stop.
@taeshi and suitcase
However, I want to get some points straight. I never tryed to grab attention, and I certainly didn’t want to try and shyt up the comments section. Enough people do that already, with the (for example) ‘poor Abby!!1!’ posts. I say a good portion of the things I do because I’m trying to make people’s day. I’ve been diagnosed with depression, and something I did to cheer myself up when I’m down was go look at the comments section on BCB (or other online places, but in my opinion BCB has the best community) and laugh at/with people. Then I figured “hey, I could do this!” and so I did. Or rather, tryed to. I know for a fact I’m not that funny, but meh. But all I try to do is make people’s day.
But the point is, I’m sorry. I’ll go be stupid elsewhere on the Internet. That dosent mean I won’t comment, but I won’t be stupid.

Derp: I did read your circus/monkey comments. And I didn’t acknowledge it because it’s basically boiling down to:

“Hey you can manage the comic how you want, but I don’t like it”
“Well I am managing the comic how I want”
“Well I just don’t like it”
“Okay that’s not going to change anything though”

I’d rather scare away bad comments if it means people are going to be saying quality things, even if it bores you. Because at the end of this day, it really is a privilege to have this comments section. So deal with my decisions!

Also you’re implying funny =/= quality. And that’s not true, people can be funny without making annoying signatures and pointing out getting firsts or getting starred or continually posting when I’m an hour or so late in the comic, that kind of thing, funny commentary to the comic is welcome. Because it’s commentary to the comic. Everything else is off-topic and not quality.

If you don’t like how the comments section is managed, it’s a lot more casual in the forums, and even more so in the IRC. Pick a card!

Taeshi February 26, 2012, 11:03 AM EST.

Comment ID #210460

You fail to realise the starred comments are not dumb ones with one-liners. At the end of the day, it’s difficult to manage the one-liners, but the one-liners are also relevant to the chapter. And that’s what I’m arguing about: If it’s about the page.

“I got first!”, “I got starred!”, “I didn’t get first!”, ” Why do all these people try to get first?”, “Why wasn’t I starred”, “where’s the new page?”, “ughh i’m waiting for the new page!!” are not.

Why don’t you get it through your head?

If you don’t want to step further into the community, then I’m sorry, it’s your own damn fault and don’t be surprised if you see me calling out/deleting comments that are talking about getting first/starred/etc. I have done it before, it is not new.

Taeshi February 26, 2012, 11:31 AM EST.

I called Curtisimo out on making a comment about getting starred.

Therefore I am perfectly valid, according to you.

Intent doesn’t matter, it’s still a comment making note about getting starred, which invites that kind of future behaviour. I’m biting at it before it becomes out of hand like first-comments. The difference is that I’ve called Curtisimo out on his behaviour before, so it was like a “strike two” message. I would have still bitten down on someone who wasn’t Curtisimo, only not made reference to past history.

I agree. “first!” and “I got first!” comments are stupid. In sorry I did the equivilant with the new starring system.

Curtisimo February 26, 2012, 1:05 PM EST.

Comment ID #210474

As you said it’s your site, right? Then why put in the star system then, you of all people should know it’ll only encourage digital ego stroking. While i disagree with trolling/ego stroking/firsting, it’s a dual responsibilty, Taeshi.
you have a responsibility as the site admin to create a system that discourages ego stroking just as it’s the users responsibility to not be asshats (not saying that curtisimo was).

Yes you are right that the comments section is a privilege, but you have to remember that it’s a comment section on the internet. People are going to speak their minds on it, the only way to prevent that is either A: no comment section or B: make it a member only comment section so you can have more control over the content within. You however made a free access comment section with little to no rules on it, so it is you and/or your staffs fault as well as the commenters fault.

As for your earlier statement about people complaining about curtisimo, IT’S THE INTERNET. There’s always going to be someone complaining about something/someone. Now if he did something racist/sexist/offensive then, yeah, i’d have your back. but this is because (as i understand the situation) somebody, on the internet no less, complained about him. It just seems like a bit of an extreme reaction to me.

To be clear, my earlier statement was aimed at the way you handled the situation. Second warning or not, you were overly aggressive in the comment. It didn’t come off as scolding or warning, it was just an outright attack. Cussing someone out is never necessary to let someone know they violated your rules. that’s all i meant by it.

strider February 26, 2012, 1:25 PM EST.

Comment ID #210475

Strider: The other choice is to call them out on their behaviour and hope that they change for the better. I guess you don’t believe in middle-ground???

I was harsher because the last time I warned him, he made a big deal about how I must not really care about the comments section and that I secretly like him just because I didn’t ban him. So he completely ignored what I said and was all “Hey if you don’t ban me then that means what I’m doing is perfectly fine!”

I was letting him know it wasn’t. In a much harsher way.

Taeshi February 26, 2012, 1:54 PM EST.

Comment ID #210476

The new system kind of accepts the idea that the comments are always going to be pretty ******, and covers it up for 90% of people by hiding the bad stuff behind a “Show More” button. I agree that the stars add problems in that they invite “YAY! I WAS STARRED” posts, and that they don’t do anything much to stop people from screaming about being first, but they do at least sweep them under the rug so we don’t have to care so much about them.

Hoheh February 26, 2012, 2:09 PM EST.

Comment ID #210479

No, i believe in being tactful, I had to undergo management training while i was in the service. One of the things they expressly forbid was chewing people out in public, you take them to the side and tell them face to face. In this case you could’ve handled the situation differently instead of embarrasing him in public. According to him he sent you emails to apologize right? So couldn’t you have sent him an email telling him he screwed up again?

And for the record, cussing at people who offend isn’t the middle ground, you are applying another extreme to a simple problem. The ideas i pointed out are more towards middle ground than how you handled it. Regardless of what you believe it was a bad way to handle a simple problem. Sorry for the criticism but it just looks bad, it makes you look bad, it makes the site look bad, and it makes your product (the comic) look bad.

Finally, If you don’t take an affirmative action then you are making idle threats. that’s what he was pointing out back then. If you are going to ban someone, ban them, if not then don’t make the threat. there are ways to handle the situation without applying threats, just saying.

Hmmm, you have a point. i’m not saying it’s a god awful idea, in fact it’s a good idea and i do like it. i just meant that a person shouldn’t be punished or publicly humiliated for sharing their joy that they were recognized by a system that boosts commenter egos

You are the creator of this comic and the overall rights holder of the site right? the way you act, even in the comments, can effect how people perceive your product. It can have detrimental effects. i’ll use an example, you go to buy a new car, who are you gonna buy from, someone who’s well spoken and polite or someone who’s cussing people out when they decide not to buy? it’s the same thing, You’re product (the comic) suffers in sales (readership and book sales) if you as the salesman (creator and admin) show poor judgement in handling situations. But, i guess, if you don’t care how many people read your comic or buy your books then i guess it doesn’t matter so yeah your idea works.

Wait, if they were talking about brushing his hair and if that man on the second panel is Abbey’s father…

does that mean any cover of fur over one’s hair count as hair? Maybe the brushing of the hair is perhaps an act that symbolifies trust and tenderness and its mysterious absence in such panel actually symbolizes its loss after such painful revelation.

If such subtle nuances and symbolism are present in this comic, then i must applaud the author, for there are few out there that manage to be as emotionally riveting while being sober enough to add such multiple layers of meaning.

This shows a lot about how abbey was living with them and Janet had took Abbey and Molly into their hands.
