This kind of loss, most people are forced to go through eventually. It’s one of the hardest things to ever experience… it’s a tax of being alive….

Still, that he hasn’t snapped yet is remarkable… I’d be broken already… poor Abbey… Remember all the people around you that do love you, kid. Try to feel… something that resembles feeling better soon.

Thanks for all of the work, Taeshi. It’s been a fun ride, even, if not especially, through the ups and downs you throw us through.

I just realised. It is Christmas, isn’t it…

okay, I understand she’s dead.
but in that case—- Taeshi, dude ( female dude, I know she’s a girl x.x ) , what the hell. way to be unrealistic with Janet O.o; I guess you wanted to give the impression that she could still be alive….. but was there no other way to do that? D:
there is no way any sensible, caring adult ( which Janet seemed to be ), would EVER act like that in a case like this.

but seriously D|

edit: also, I don’t mean that I’m surprised she’s dead, I knew this was a possibility. I’m just surprised at how Janet went about it all. it doesn’t seem in her character…..
I can’t tell if she warned him before they came, or if she just told him they were going to see his mom, and then brought him to a graveyard….. ( and oh my s***, I really hope it’s not the latter…… )
I’m also confused as to why she acted so happy during the trip…. even if I wanted to help lighten the mood, I’m not sure I’d do so by singing loudly to awkward pop songs…… maybe I was taught odd funeral/death etiquette? ;^;

Chose to disappear? Does this mean she commited suidcide, or possibly euthanized?

I’m wondering how Abbey isn’t dying of a broken heart right now. Sometimes I wish I could reach through the screen a hug him. I mean. Daisy and Janet are there for him, but…Christ. This must be harsh for him.

Randommoron5 April 4, 2012, 12:08 AM America/New_York.

I expected this. Poor Abbey, I lost a family member and it was so hard, I don’t know how Abbey’s going to deal with that, or even how Molly will. Luckily he’s got Daisy, but that was a little insensitive on Janet’s part. Maybe she did that to hide her own sadness???? Still, I love how you developed Abbey so much Taeshi. He and Augustus are my favorite characters. Good job on giving him some depth! (However, I can’t shake the feeling that the grave Abbey’s staring at isn’t ACTUALLY Abbey’s mum. Anyone else thinking this????)

I might be hibernating for a few more months. D:

In all seriousness, I don’t think I like what this chapter might be hinting at. But, it seems she cared, at least in this point of the flashback. I suppose that will have to do; I shall get my heartwarming where I can get it.

And, I don’t know what it is, but I’ve always found graveyards to be rather peaceful; maybe some of the characters need to visit in the hopes that, via magical osmosis, some inner-peace’ll be instilled in them too.

Comment ID #213545

as for the disappearing…… I think she means how the mom never came back, contacted, etc….. she just sortof faded into the background untill she “disappeared”. I wonder if she was sick?
she also looked a little pregnant to me, so maybe she was pregnant and the child didn’t make it, and she didn’t want to have to explain?
I’m not sure about that one though, she may have just not been as skinny as most of the characters. which is fine, because it always made her seem motherly and kind to me ^-^;;;; <3

or I suppose she could have been somehow disabled by the fight??
it sounded like Janet was hinting at some specific change or secret…..

I believe I speak for all of us when I say this.
BCB isn’t what it used to be. This used to be an engrossing comic, with realistic characters dealing with, realistic, everyday scenarios in a funny fashion.
What it is today is just pointless angst and depression.
First, we came for the lulz, as in the comics beginning it was nothing but low-brow, juvenile humor with a little plot thrown in.
And that was actually pretty good.
Then, came the glory days; engrossing characters and story, unique situations, with all the right balance of humor, drama, story, suspense, and yes, angst. I’m talking about around that time in the [unspellable] mountains. You introduced some incredibly dramatic, sad situations, but managed to keep it lighthearted with cleverly placed humor and the introduction of that awkward 20-something who’s name I can’t remember.
Those were the good days of the comic.
And now we have today’s BCB. Vomit from sadness and hurt. Cheating and wife beating. Childhood mental scarring. Dead mothers. This isn’t what BCB is.
But, honestly, I’m more worried about the driving force behind the comic. When you only know someone through the most superficial sense -pictures and text, completely unrelated to the person themselves- and said pictures and text suddenly become depressing and angry, what do you assume has happen to the author? Something that makes them depressed and angry.
Veronica, we understand. Something horrible has happened to you. We would all like to know what it is, so we can help.
The Internet is an open forum, for better or for worse. I believe the BCB community is a fairly tight-knit little family, with the regular stereotypes: the stupid little brother, the supportive, intelegent father. We all know who I’m talking about, and who you are in the relationship. So, Veronica, just let it out. We all want to help you get over whatever it is that’s got you upset. You’ve created a wonderful thing, with a powerful, living community.
And if I’ve been reading into nothing, and this is just how the story has turned, don’t be angry, please. I mean the best. And if I am entirely wrong, well… you know the proverb.

Taeshi herself has stated, via twitter and what not, that this is all stuff she has had planned for years. And has also stated in the past that BCB above all things is a Drama comic with some comedy tossed in.

Please don’t say things like ‘speak for all of us’, cause I have my own voice and views that differ greatly.

I can appreciate chapters like these. I can appreciate characters like Abbey. Not all the characters of BCB go through horrible things, or have pain ridden lives. it adds for a great diversity to show that things arent always sunshine and sparkles for everyone. But it does yes make you wish for happier days and makes ya appreciate the better days.

Its a look from the outside in on many different types of people and many different walks of life.

Truth be told Taeshi, I envy your story telling skills and the ability to create characters that can incite such emotions in your readers. Be it simple joy to down right loathing hate.

sometimes scary how much some of em hate so hard on certain characters….

I honestly almost cried when reading this page…..cause I genuinely like Abbey, I know what it’s like to see through the eyes of someone who has been hurt and marred by the ones your supposed to be able to trust.
And to see where this is headed, 0i… D:

Hm… Everyone’s saying “suicide”, but this seems more like a case of “kill the abusive ******* to keep her kids from ending up with him when she runs off”. I think the freedom she finally got was by getting away, but she couldn’t take her children with her. She knew that eventually her husband would get out and might even get custody of the children, so she probably offed him then headed to fur-person Mexico.

I don’t know. I want to just imagine Janet pulling her face off, and yelling SURPRISE! I’m your mom!

But that probably wouldn’t happen.

Seriously though, we don’t even know who’s name is on the gravestone. I know it kind of points to Abbey’s mom, but I don’t want to give up hope. Maybe it was Abbey’s dad there, and Abbey’s mom is visiting?

Cyaniede April 4, 2012, 1:23 AM America/New_York.

Comment ID #213566

Everyone’s saying his mom died, but there are a few things thay don’t quite fit:

1. Unless I’m misreading his expression (which would be entirely my fault), Abbey is smiling in panel two, so either he’s relieved/happy about what he sees or he’s one of those people who laugh at horrendously serious things to feel better, which he’s not.

2. If she’s dead, Janet did some things that don’t seem quite like her - she didn’t tell him that she was dead, which doesn’t seem quite in-character, and she sung along to pop music on the trip there, something which is inappropriate given the assumed context.

3. This arc has been dragged on for a fairly long time, building up an enormous amount of suspense which is all the better for surprising people who expect one thing with something completely different.

4. The wording Janet is using - she didn’t say she DIED, she said she DISAPPEARED. While it could be a strange euphemism, given the other stuff that seems less likely.

5. If it was a suicide (which seems the most likely if she’s dead), that means that Taeshi will have to show it, or even just imply it like the lamp incident, which would be pretty morbid, even for a drama comic like BCB.

All this plus I’m still hopeful that Abbey will get at least one break in his whirlwind of horrendous childhood memories 8-D

Although I will admit that being in a graveyard for this is awfully suspicious… Unless maybe she’s a graveyard keeper or something?

Where are your angels in the verge of death? In even the most seemingly innocent life, one is to be judged based on their background. The majority of people would think that this would possibly soften or sink his heart… I’m not one to think of such depressing ideas. If I were Taeshi, I would make Abbey turn into an insane madman. After all, something as such would make a comic all the mortem dramatic, or depressing..

TraceLegacySSOF April 4, 2012, 1:57 AM America/New_York.

Comment ID #213573

You know, it’s strange how many people want to talk around in circles and deny that she’s dead, that she did some vigilante justice crap and jumped the border or something. Apparently a surprising amount of people would just love to think “oh, he abused her, someone please kill him” as if abuse is pretty much equal in degree of evil to murder, as if action that brings a little misery is the same thing as action that brings an end to a lifetime of all emotions possible to feel.

She died of cancer. She died of some sort of brain damage from that blow to the head. She died of something that first required a hospital visit, and gave her at least a little time to think about the matter. There are plenty of such things.

Death happens, and what most people would call “justice” usually doesn’t. For those who would still advocate this “Mother killed father and went to Mexico” crap, is it so very easy to kill a man who is in jail that the details can remain both unspoken and obvious?

Abbey’s mother is dead, and Abbey’s father… we don’t have a clue what happened to him. Maybe he’s out on parole already. Maybe he’s in the can gett’n raped. Maybe he’s dead. That’s for Taeshi to figure out whether or not to tell us. From what she said it’s a good assumption that he’s in prison for domestic violence.

Now can we stop kidding ourselves? There are several rational reasons that Abbey might smile. Disbelief, shock, onset of madness. This is but one moment after this aweful truth revealed itself to Abbey. A lot happens when the mind is under tremendous stress. I’ve seen someone do this same thing after being told her uncle was dead, laugh a little and then calmly walk over to the wall, lean her back against it, slide to the floor, put her forehead on her knees, and cry for almost a half hour straight. The human mind is a fragile thing, and famously hard to predict.

That’s including Taeshi’s. What the hell is gonna happen in seven pages?

Abbey has snapped. The fact he hasn’t spoken yet may not be a physical snap but it is a mental snap. He’s been broken…Janet should have told him before they left in private. Showing him his mothers tombstone and where she’s buried is similar to shoving his face in an opinion that he’s just like daddy.

Also what Biblioholic said about that person he/she saw that lost her uncle, her reaction is not out of the ordinary. Inappropriate laughter is usually accompanied by intense anger or grief and no mental instability or illness needs to be involved.
It’s a good thing that Molly didn’t go with Abbey to visit their mother, but she’ll know about this sooner or later. It will be heartbreaking for sure.

Poor little tyke, it really is surprising how, even after his mom _____________ (insert hurtful action), he still tries to be strong, reliable and a source of protection and comfort to his sister. THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is called being resilient. Look it up in the dictionary.

It takes a lot of self-control to be like that, especially in THIS kinda situation…

there’s a reason why people are denying the death of abbey’s mom. it’s because, narratively, Abbey’s mom being dead MAKES NO SENSE. None of the clues lead up to that conclusion, don’t believe me let’s look at the clues.

the revelation: Janet tells him something thus revealing the mother’s location. it shocked abbey thus, back then, you could draw the idea of the mother’s death and some possibilities of denial however…

the trip: Janet’s attitude is way to fluffy and happy for a trip to abbey’s mother’s grave and he’s having a sort of cause and effect flashback with parallels to the abbey sr. situation. thus his mind still in fact registers interpretations about that situation; thus his mind is not in total denial about the situation as he registers the effect of extreme violence in his mind. So….

the arrival: he’s in complete shock again, but wait, he shouldn’t be shocked to an extent of an psychotic episode. it’s almost as if he hasn’t been told his mom is dead. “but wait, he’s in denial.” okay, for his reaction to be this extreme he had to have completely blocked out what he was told, but we just saw his mind is still registering the effects of extreme violence and making parallels to his mom’s situation. So that means his mind is still acknowledging a fact about his mom’s situation. So why is his reaction so extreme at the graveyard, he obviously acknowledges the facts to some level. his reaction, however, is parallel to a NEW revelation.

But wait, Janet told him something about his mother at the party, his mind has been processing something the whole time. So did Janet not tell him that his momma was dead, apparently not if he’s freaking out like he is.

and that, biblio, is why everyone is saying that the mother can’t be dead. they’re not in denial, it’s the fact that the party revelation and the plot from there on hasn’t been matching a story line about the death of the mother. If abbey was in complete denial why was he still drawing parallels to his mother’s situation, if he was drawing parallels why was he showing signs of complete denial of the situation. The only possible answer to this is that Janet didn’t tell him about the mother’s death, but why would she do something like not tell and still drive him there unless she was some cold hearted bi-atch, which she’s not obviously.

So far, this is the most strangely worded couple pages I’ve seen in the entire comic. I can’t tell if she’s trying to make the readers think.. Or is slacking slightly on making the last couple pages comprehensible and coherent. Is anyone else getting this vibe?

I think it’s obvious to see, to me at least.

She’s dead. Cancer, a broken heart, etc. Something that will be explained in the next page or two, but I am now going to say, she’s dead.

@the messenger
Yeah, I feel you’re right. She might have believed the comic was mostly drama-angst from the start with a bit of humor, but looking at the archives that’s not how it played. Just like we all had a weird shock last chapter when we realized all the hitting in the beginning of the comic wasn’t Ranma 1/2 slapstick, it was supposed to be real hitting with real hurt. Didn’t come across that way because the comic was…not skillful back then. Very lacking, honestly. To be told something was “supposed to be” instead of us realizing it means that it was not conveyed properly. It came across as a joke because the comic looked and acted like a joke. So yeah, the tone has certainly changed through just the presentation of the art alone. It’s not scribbles anymore.

I don’t think Abbey’s expression is crazy or wrong or unusual. It’s not really a smile, if you look at all of his face.

It’s what your face does when you get very bad news and all of your throat and face muscles tighten up just before you start to cry. You see this expression on a child’s face when they hurt themselves on the playground and the pain is just starting.

I want to give Taeshi nothing but praise for creating and sharing a realistic, engaging, often sad, sometimes funny, clever slice-of-life graphic novel.
Especially the portrayal of school life: how teachers can be clueless and demented, how cruel the mainstream kids can be to those that don’t quite fit in, and how some fortunate oddballs manage to find each other and form a group of friends.

Bittersweet Candy Bowl deserves an Ursa Award.

I think I might cry… This comic addresses some very real, and sometimes very heavy things, but this is where it gets personal for me.

When I first started reading this comic I thought it was just going to be a funny comic about cutely drawn teenage animals picking on each other, but the more I read it the deeper it gets. Who’d have guessed it would turn out to be such a gem. Thank you for creating and sharing such a wonderful webcomic. I look forward to these updates more than any other.

Taeshi, im not trying to insult you, far from it, when i say that i have had to forcefully detach myself from your comic emotionally. Your storytelling and characters are so lifelike and real to me that a comic like this one would make me sad for days. Previously i had been so entranced, so enthralled by your characters and their story, that their feelings and pains quickly became my own. And with this, arc, it made me think about my life if this were to happen, and i realized how similar my reaction would be to Abbey’s. That realization caused any emotional stress Abbey went through to also go through me, I’m not as strong as you, Teashi. i can’t handle even the thought of this, so i will stay an avid reader, but i strongly guard my heart, lest you decide this pain isnt enough.

For everyone, here’s a pro-tip: All throughout this chapter, flashbacks have a brownish tint to the coloration… a sepia tone: Its meant to give you the illusion of age… aka: flashback… like an old video clip on a movie real.

NOTE: Not necessarily is this done throughout the entire comic, simply in this chapter. Its a nice bit of Artistry and a neat trick Vero.

As for anyone thinking Abbey is happy, you obviously have never felt overwhelming despair from a deep personal loss… This is perfectly normal for a person who is expecting to find someone they have lost, only to discover that before they could be reunited, the other has left this world.

First, there is the numbness… then the constricting of your expressions… perhaps laughter… followed by a deep wailing noise from inside as the despair washes over you…. then the sobbing.

I envy those who don’t understand the feeling. Your life must be bliss.

Way to go, strider and biblioholic. *clap, clap, clap* I find your testimonies amusing, taking the attention of almost everyone else who may seem insignificant, but could turn out to have a great influence on others. Everyone loves paying attention to the people who take consideration and thought in what is supposed to be a simple comment. I don’t find it amusing that you feel the need to answer to every insignificant annoyance and question that comes across you. Of course, replying to questions and statements with a thorough understanding of the concept is indeed helpful, but an excessive behavior to do so is, in my opinion, making you seem like you purposely strive towards making yourself mightier than everyone else.

in case you haven’t noticed that’s kind of our thing here. Do I over analyze? maybe, but that’s just my style (Biblio can explain his/her reasons if he/she feels like it). If you don’t like it, tough, until taeshi says we’re being an annoyance i see no reason to stop and for the record i was replying directly to biblio because i felt i could give him/her a bit of perspective on the other side of the board. Just like i did in the mike and lucy wars by taking mike’s side of the fight.

when i feel pain of any kind i do one of two things smile and laugh it off or for the more emotional kind keep quiet and put on a brave face. i do those things so i may be able to ignore the pain so it won’t affect me and keep me from doing what needs to be done. on the outside i may look fine but on the inside i just want to curl up into a ball and cry. abbey impresses me in a way i didn’t expect since he keeps going and i doubt that i with my ability to cope would survive what he has been through.
