What’s weird is that I’m only recently learning and adjusting to the fact that these characters live in the States. I always thought they were Australian! They don’t talk like Americans. Except for, like, Katie. So when Mike says something like that it briefly throws me for a loop.

Americans do speak English you know… Katie has just a VERY stereotypical “Valley Girl” accent. I’ve probably only met a less than a handful of people that actually talk that way… all younger than 18. Maybe it depends on where you go/live?

Auuugh Mike!

If you didn’t have a girlfriend, and you didn’t berate Lucy for flirting with you while you had a girlfriend, then I wouldn’t give 2 cents about you flirting with your study partner.

But you do. And you did. So what are you doing? How is this morally acceptable behavior in your mind?

I don’t think he’s flirting, he is just trying to convince Stacey that she shouldn’t be so embarrassed about liking stuff others don’t like. Admittedly he does suck at it though.

Edit: I suck at typing on a touch screen.

__noname__ April 23, 2014, 1:34 PM EST.

Comment ID #279867

@Fish: Because he isn’t flirting? He is simply trying to make her feel less alone, and he is failing. From some guys this would be flirting but from Mike? No, he is too obsessed with Sandy for that.

And mike is flirting with her… Trying to be nice with a girl is flirting… If she were just a friend. I would say: “Yes, you are a losser ngga… Now… shall we study or what?”
^That is a friend reaction…

Comment ID #279876

Aw man, Mike is as smooth as a bull in a china shop there :D

“So she is a gamer? big deal?”

It is a big deal for her, because most people in her friends circle propably think that only “idiotic nerds” would play it and/or hate gamers. So she is scared of being exposed as a gamer and getting thrown out of her friends circle because of that.

“Trying to be nice with a girl is flirting…”
Uhm what? o.O

Tails April 23, 2014, 1:53 PM EST.

Comment ID #279877

So being nice to a girl is flirting. So I should not be nice to a girl. Check.

Dude/dudett? Do you hear your self. You’re basically saying that boys and girls can’t be friends.

“Yes, you are a losser ngga… Now… shall we study or what?”

Some might see it to be friendly but I find the ”Now… shall we study or what?” not to be friendly since it shows lack of interest/attention.

Boys and girls can just be friends. This is definitely not flirting. But hey. If that is your opinion on the world then so be it. I aint going to change it :/

Jonas97face April 23, 2014, 1:59 PM EST.

Comment ID #279878

Yeah. Stacy has placed her self in a friend circle that doesn’t value (like) what Stacy likes. She doesn’t know any one else, she doesn’t know who else to hang out with so she keeps it a secret (I’m just guessing now, I don’t know if Stacy has any more friends that wouldn’t mind her gaming).

Pretty hard for her. It can be hard for people to separate from the only friend circle one knows about.

Jonas97face April 23, 2014, 2:02 PM EST.

Comment ID #279879

“From some guys this would be flirting but from Mike? No, he is too obsessed with Sandy for that.”

He’s still flirting then, except unintentionally.

Doesn’t excuse him though, especially considering this chapter most likely is about how Mike leads girls on and then disappointing them, subconsciously.

Much like how Lucy were defensively acting rough unintentionally.

Carlton April 23, 2014, 2:10 PM EST.

Comment ID #279880

Yeah exactly, also propably all the years (at least i guess so) of hearing “gamers are total stupid and losers and we would not be friends with them” from the people in this friend circle made her very ashamed of her hobby and left its mark on her psyche. And you are propably right, she seems to do not really have other friends out of her friends circle (in which she most likely just got dragged in by her “best friend” Katie)

Also, you are right, it is not friendly at all.

I’m American… I’ve never once thought that the characters in the comic talk Austrailian haha. They just sound like normal human beings for the most part. Which is probably we each imagine them living in our own home settings, right?

I mean, there are quirky little differences in word meanings for different states and different countries. In the northern american states, we say “Soda is good, but coke is my favorite brand.” In various other states, it’s the norm to say “soda-pop” or just “pop,” some just call all soda “coke.”
And some Irish people I know will say “wee” instead of “small.”
People from england say “bollocks” instead of balls.

I’ve never really spoken to an Aussie for very long, but I have English and Irish pen pals. I’m sure you guys have a different way of saying certain things as well.

However, I have never met another American who actually speaks like a “valley girl,” lol. I guess movies are somewhat misleading when it comes to things like that :) But honestly, not many Americans speak in that manner.

“LIKE OH EM GEE DID YOU GUYS HEAR WHAT SPINELLI SAID TO JACK ELOHEL like what a dumb biatch! Ohemgee ohemgee like, eww!”
It takes too much effort to always be at that level of excitement, and Americans are lazy. xD

PS: Mike. You. I can’t. If it were me instead ot Stacy, I’d be laughing. I’m sorry, bro.

Silveryogurt April 23, 2014, 2:47 PM EST.

Comment ID #279886

Stacy is basically just the “better side” of Lucy. She likes gaming, likes Mike, and isn’t that close to her “friends”. She also gets REALLY defensive when she’s flustered or embarrassed. However, she doesn’t take a sadistic pleasure in hurting Mike(yelling in his ears).

I found a word that describes Lucy:Schadenfreude.

Comment ID #279893

@Silveryogurt&Termania I’m Canadian, actually. The characters all have very “commonwealth” speech patterns though. Like how on this page, Mike says “meant to be you.” While an American would be more likely to say “supposed,” “meant to” is more commonwealth and would turn up in Australia and occasionally here in Canada. There’s also a bit where Mike texts Sandy, “Do you want me turning up early?” That is VERY telling. :P This is just my personal experiences talking of course, but that, coupled with author heritage, lead me to believe the BCB crowd were Aussies.

Heheh. Heheheh. Heheheheh. Yup. Ima add this right now, i think Mike is an awesome character. I relate to him cause there are few guys who actually know or care about loyalty and morals nowadays. Its all about being all for one. (Of course, i dont agree with that crap he pulled between him and lucy, he was an ******* and everyone knows it, but any other time hes been doin good) now whats goin on here is clearly not mike flirting. If some girl asks to be a study partner to a good guy, the guy would be like sure, and try to make her feel comfortable rather than let her think shes a loser for playing games. They clearly arent close enough for mike to joke around and call her a loser and get to work. Im liking how Mikes handling this, even if he is being hilariously awkward. But if Stacy gets anywhere with Mike kiss or beyond, thatll be a twist and a half cause mikes whole character of loyalty will get thrown in the trash, and he’d look even more of a douche than ppl think of him now. I doubt that’ll happen. But still… where is this going? Maybe some weird complicated stuff is about to happen? Or will this finally bring up Lucy is some way?

Okay, that was pretty lame mike. But seriously, I’m assuming that was supposed to be an MMORPG that popped up on screen. That’s not really loser level anymore with it becoming more mainstream. So that seems a pretty extreme freak out over something trivial. At least to me.

Now, I may have missed some British/Australian/other “specific” words (i.e. rubbish), but even then I would just think a British person in America because that’s just the mindset I have.

WellAlright April 23, 2014, 6:10 PM EST.

Comment ID #279923

@thedrpalmer I think most Americans would assume this story was in America from the getgo, but that’s a whole other issue that makes people cranky to talk about. Still, it’s not as if there’s one “normal” form of English surrounded by raging stereotypes and extremes. The difference in speech pattern is definitely subtle; given that Taeshi chose to set this story in the USA it’s most likely that the flat, new-world English was deliberate and the few cues I picked up on were just author influence.

If we are going to go by author heritage (and I might be wrong so do correct me); I believe when Veronica started the comic she was still in the states, and therefore made the characters and the environment based on her present geographical location. (i.e. it was snowing in “December”; for the Southern hemisphere aka Australia that would be the summer months, so it wouldn’t make sense to see snow.) Even something like the school buses; it is very stereotypically a “North American” school bus (They are rarely yellow in Australia). When she moved however probably some terminology changed and it reflected itself in the comic… but there are just too many other more telling signs that this takes place in the USA. At Rachel’s birthday for example they were all “underage” when drinking whereas in Australia depending on the where the legal drinking age varies between 16 and 18 (so at least the older classmates wouldn’t be classified as underaged.) and in the USA it’s strictly 21…

Those are just my observations.

@Carlton: He isn’t flirting if his intent isn’t actually to get her attention that way. A key point of flirting is that you have to be trying to get the person’s attention that way. If that is not your intent, then you aren’t flirting. Mike isn’t flirting because he is just trying to be silly to cheer her up - however, he is leading her on accidentally by bringing up those letters on the bus ride, then doing this.

@Termania Those are all… really good points, actually. I started reading quite late in the comic’s run and wasn’t fully aware of the author’s history, but I’m not sure how I missed things as obvious as snow in December. I think I put too much weight in the verbal cues because I place so much emphasis on character dialogue in fiction. Talkin’s where it’s at, yo.
But yeah, when you add it all up, it makes way more sense that they’d be in the States whether explicitly stated or not. Well played.

Hey Veronica, I finally got myself a copy of BCB Vol. 3, and I gotta say—the colored pages are gorgeous! You’ve really outdone yourself this time. The only minor problem I see is the dark color printing. It’s really difficult to see certain pages when there are tons of dark hues involved. An example would be this page in the book: http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/c63/p57.html

If you haven’t looked into this already, I suggest you do for the next volume. Just some color adjustments are needed—everything else is perfect! Thanks so much for making these comics. Gives me something to look forward to every week :D

Migbird et al,

They’re located in the northeast US, and despite my effort to keep everything American it looks like some of my Australian voice seeps through. “Meant to” is something I think I wrote, and I wasn’t aware it was a British English sort of thing at all. I’m sure we’ve made similar slips in the past and I might try to revise them where I can. Still, I do hope things like that are exceptions! To my ear, I think they sound genuinely American, and not only superficially.

Dark colours like that are incredibly hard to print. I tried hard to make them work but it didn’t pan out.. I’m a little mad with the printer for not checking my colour tweaks like I asked, but hey. I’m glad you like the book otherwise.

@Boh “anyway, who would play a game in the morning bef0re going to school? there’s no time. ”

You obviously neither are nor live near a gamer, especially a young one. 30 minutes is more then enough time. That is the rule for gamers. Is the world exploding? No? Enough time for a quick stab at something.

Charles April 24, 2014, 11:35 AM EST.

Comment ID #279976

@ Charles, lol you’re words strike true about gamers.
Fifteen minutes before the school bus shows up and only half a mile walk? Think I can get in about thirteen minutes of game time and still make it to the bus in two minutes and if I have to, I’ll run to the bus stop.
Anyways, thirteen minutes is about enough time to get that next level up and level five gear unlocked, which I would’ve unlocked last night, if I didn’t pass out at 5 am in the morning.
Food is ready to eat, but in the middle of a huge boss fight? No problem, just put the plate on my lap and I’ll spoon the food into my face every now and then while still handling the keyboard and mouse like a pro.
Like, I understand if you come from the era of Pac-Man and Pong, and if that’s all you played as a gamer I can say my soul mourns for you, but games have come a long, LONG way since Mr. Pac-Man. Like a long freakin’ ways.
You don’t just bounce a 2D ball back and forth on 2D sticks anymore. For some playing games is recreational. For others, it’s a dedication.

EDIT: Oh and @ FVK, you’re right. This is the 21th century and people are still squeamish about playing games? Like, lol, I can understand in my father’s gen and especially my grandfather’s gen how playing video games and working on computers would seem nerdy and unmanly. However in this century, video games and computers are like sodas: you can’t walk a freakin’ mile without running into one, hearing someone talk about them, or using them.

Mig has no idea what he’s talking about. There is no sign of any kind of “british” english, hes full of it. I had a few people look at this comic, and 2 people from texas, myself form california, and a person from the eastern U.S(I think new york but dont quote me) all agree, the english here is perfect, ti sounds like its from the U.S. No one could identify the dialect but thats a -good- unless you want to do that specifically.

Michael April 24, 2014, 12:31 PM EST.

Comment ID #279979

Actually it takes someone with experience in all types of English and their variations to spot the differences.

And Mig is correct, and you are funny enough wrong for basing it only on subjects who are used to only U.S. English.

Someone only used to U.S. English will just find it a little bit odd unless words not in their normal vocabulary is being used.

While someone who has been exposed to all the variations extensively can easily point out the differences.

Besides, what’s most trustworthy? someone like you pulling a claim out of their *** or using their friends? or someone who can document and point out the differences and even properly name them?

Kit April 24, 2014, 12:47 PM EST.

Comment ID #279980

MigBird’s point makes sense, so I believe it. I just hope it’s not a common thing in the comic. I’d be inclined to say it isn’t, but there are examples laying around. Kind of like how we had to round up all the words spelled in the British way and “correct” them to suit the American audience.

I had people from four dialects read the pages mig ‘pointed out’(he argued just as well as anyone else here.) And every single dang one of them says they either can’t tell what part of the U.S they are from, or its clearly in the western U.S somewhere.
If your different dialects can’t spot the difference, then you’re nitpicking. and ask yourself this, would someone like me, an aspiring writer, and every single other person who reads BBC have gone this long not noticing if what mig claims is correct? No, perhaps it be more fair to say hes pulling hypoboles but he by no longic correct.

I applaud suitcase for looking out for these things, I really do, its hard work. But don’t tell anyone he’s failing because him and taishi are doing an amazing job at it. If they weren’t, it wouldn’t take until now to see this argument come up.

@thanatos is there anyone you don’t hate? Literally -every- time you post its calling someone a curse for overeacting or not following your personal ethics. I’ve written by the book soldiers less spiteful.

ah, right, the shops.

not for me. if I know I won’t be able to play with a game for at least one hour, I don’t even bother doing it (unless the only alternative is sitting there staring at the wall, but it’s very rare). it’s because I hate leaving things unfinished and in less than an hour I usually can’t do many things (it depends on the game, too). for example, now I’m playing dark souls. if one day there’s a boss I can’t defeat yet because I tried too few times and I have to stop playing, if the next time I only have half an hour I don’t try to defeat it (unless I feel very confident), because I don’t want to risk to learn how to fight it but not have the time to finish the job, and therefore have to lose other time the next time I play.

boh... April 24, 2014, 7:39 PM EST.

Comment ID #279999

Jeez, guys, you’re acting like I was making a personal attack on the writers.
My point was this and only this: I didn’t know where the characters lived, and assumed it was Australia. Not just because of the characters’ dialect, which is mostly normal for American speech, but also because of what I knew of the authors.
Yes, the bits of “commonwealth English” ARE the exception. NO, I wasn’t trying to start an argument or criticize anything. I was just mentioning it because Mike said “Loserville, USA,” and it reminded me of what I used to think and thought it would be interesting and WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME.
Note to self: Stay away from BCB comments from now on. Nothing is safe.

MigBird April 24, 2014, 9:10 PM EST.

Comment ID #280000

Oh man, I feel like I’ve come to this English dialect party late. Anyways, time to dive in!
@Tails Well, importance is really subjective. If you’re referencing suitcase’s comment about changing British spellings into more Americanized spellings, than that is about making the reading experience comfortable for the majority of their readers. I am not an expert, but I’d wager that when constructing the dialog for a comic such as this, you’d refrain from using spellings and terminology that is foreign to the majority of your readers. In addition, as mig mentioned, in a written/drawn piece of work the language can give as much of a sense of place as the actual environment can. Thus, an American environment with British English could be a very confusing experience to a reader. Though, that would be a very interesting experiment.
Now, if you are referencing the difference in frequency of use of certain phrases or words, such as mig pointed out, it isn’t as important. There is no glaring difference in sentence structure, spelling, or definition; simply a shift in frequency of use. In fact, it would take someone who’s been accustomed to such shifts in frequency to even notice that there is a difference.

@Michael Kit, and to a greater extent Mig, were not nitpicking the piece. I read no negativity towards the writers in any way. Mig has stated that he was merely pointing out a phrase that is used more in the commonwealth (I call British) English more frequently than in American English. There was then backup evidence that it could be an artifact from suit’s own language background. Also, just to clarify, these subtle differences in frequency could mostly only be picked up by those that understand what the differences are. If you didn’t know that more BE speakers say “meant to” when an AE speaker would say “supposed to” then you wouldn’t know it was even different. I didn’t know until today, then I looked it up, and it’s true! Anyways, my point is that you can’t use the excuse that “if no one else has noticed then it must not be true.” I’d guess a very small minority of BCB readers could recognize the difference. I know that only a minority of readers comment. So two sets of minorities, and you are looking for the intersection of the two sets. I am actually surprised that intersection isn’t a null set. Anyways, I guess my point is to give mig (and kit, being his defender), a bit of slack. No one is trying to be harmful or anything. Just some good ol’ linguistic fun.

@MigBird I’m not gonna lie, if you’ve been on any part of the internet you should know that no comment section is ever safe! Ha, but seriously don’t stay away entirely, it’s actually a pretty cool place. I mean, once you get past all the angst and Mike hate. Hope to see your name pop up again sometime.

AH…I do apologize migbird, I though you were starting some crap on the dialect or speech of the characters and attacking the dialogue. If were talking about weird comments we do have what I think is a fonz reference, something not really popular anymore. Either way sorry for misunderstanding, I was a total jerk.

@ Ramzin
As I said above my main comment was toward full on dialect attacks. The dialogue is what it should be, heck if anything it’s a bit -too- global. And yes, if ti was unnatural people would have spoken out before now. Just because it’s hard to detail doesn’t mean we don’t notice. But I digress, it was still me being a jerk over a misconception.

But yah migbird, don’t leave us, as much as I argue I have nothing against you personally, the only people I have anything against are the character bashers. Seriously. I have to wonder if these people like anyone at all.
