Why is she so spiteful towards him? She did what any decent person would have done, as evidenced by Paulo doing it. Also, how could Paulo carry something around 130 lbs. of dead weight, in a quickly flowing river and make it out. Also, I she uses the words ‘stupid’, ‘idiot’ and ‘jerkface’ so many times, it’s getting annoying. One more thing, why did no one else respond, it seems like it took people like a minute to realize what was happening.
Lastly, Grammar Nazi time. When you use an ellipsis, it is a continuation of a sentence unless it has four dots in it. With this in mind, the preceding word should not be capitalized. Irregardless, such is besides the point, however.

Paulo to the rescue! If only he arrived a little sooner then Lucy wouldn’t have her hydrophobia ;-;. Also that look of fear she had while she was taking what could have been her last breath made me wonder what could she have been thinking putting herself in this situation? Love can make people do crazy thing is the only response I can think of.

We have our own style rules for ellipses that we’re pleased by, but even if we didn’t I am pretty certain your post is false. I’ve never seen a style guide that doesn’t prescribe three dots for an ellipsis.

Obviously she jumped in because she didn’t want to die alone, not knowing Paulo would show up., and now that he did the blame must be laid else where.

@ Suitcase
No, no, no, no, no. You see, if you are ending the sentence, you are supposed to use four periods in order to distinguish the termination of the sentence. The first period represents the end of the sentence and is completely separated from the ellipsis.
Also, my last sentence denotes that what I said didn’t matter.
@ Blank_on_Purpose

Well, this seems to solidify the idea that Lucy is literally willing to “die” for Mike. Despite being unable to swim or lift Mike out of the river, she still goes in after him nonetheless (very selfless, reckless, courageous, and foolish on Lucy’s part). It would seem she’s the kind of person that doesn’t respond much to “regular” situations, but in an emergency (especially in life-or-death scenarios. Let’s recall who stood up to the “alleyway bullies” and gave them a good tussle for the sake of her friends) she’s one of the first to react.
I’m guessing that Lucy feels like she deserves some compensation for being there for Mike when it counted and feels like her actions are overlooked by him. She was there for him when Sandy left and when he nearly drowned (even if Paulo was the one who saved both of their tails in the end). I guess what she’s really frustrated about and wants to tell Mike, but would rather have him come to an understanding on his own, is that she really cares for him.
However, there’s a piece of this puzzle that doesn’t seem to fit in place at first. I think it was in the “December” chapter that there was a flashback of a young Mike making an advance on a young Lucy, only to be turned down. Is it possible that the older Lucy (whose feelings for Mike are now a bit more “mature”) regrets turning away Mike at that point and could Mike still be a little sore about the rejection?
As a speculation, only time and Taeshi could possibly tell.

I recall that chapter… x:
I’m not sure whether we ever got official timing on it or not, but I always assumed it was shortly after the loss of Sandy, during the period when he was using Lucy as a substitute or just after he had begun truly caring for her.
I find it hard to blame her for being too afraid to allow him to go through with it…. :\

Based upon what I can see, this is either a recap to solidify a central idea that was placed prior to this sequence, such as that she’s actually not over him, or that she is; or this is sequence has the purpose of introducing a new perspective that Lucy has now accepted, such that she either still likes him, or now hates him. We shall have to wait and see how this turns out…

Nikita, I think you’re misunderstanding the rule on quoted blocks which omit a sentence, as per the examples on this page. It appears to be a Chicago Manual of Style idea, but I don’t think it’s required of all writing. (For what it’s worth, that’s not my preferred style, I’d write […] because I don’t value the information the fourth dot provides.)

A more standard grammarian take on this page would be to correct it to say “And to think…” “…I could have drowned…” “…for a stupid idiot like you.” But as I said, we do not abide by typical rules for ellipses in this comic (or our writing…)

btw while I hate big swinging dick grammar contests i should point out that you said “irregardless” a scant few words after declaring yourself a grammar nazi

Unlike what most people are suggesting, I don’t think she’s mad at him because he almost drowned, I think she’s mad at him because he’s been giving her the cold shoulder when she clearly cared and continues to care very deeply for him. The whole drowning thing is coming into play because she’s basically saying “I would die for you and this is what I get?”

I speak and type with accents when I say certain things. For example, whenever I say something with the word People’s in it, I speak and type with a Slavic accent. Whenever I make a pledge or oath, I do it in a German accent. Whenever I make a threat, I do it in a Chinese accent. Whenever I act all snooty and uptight, I do it in a French accent. Whenever I talk about Jesus, I say it in a hick accent and when I use an intransitive sentence in reply to what someone said (eg. I don’t understand, Nobody has time for that, etc.), I usually do it in a black accent.
In case you ask, the way I type here is the way I talk in real life. Not sure why, just do.
Also, I still don’t understand what you meant in your first comment.

To be honest I can see this from three different views:

Outsider looking in: She is justified by being upset for doing something that scared her so much for him who she loves, and yet he ignores her and can be mean. BUT he is justified in being upset with her because he had put his heart out their saying he loves her and she pulled into herself, but their is probably something more in depth between them for why he puts up with her ackwarness.

Family side: this could be seen as they all should go to counseling and receive help, and be told that their are ways to handle your feelings.

Third from if I was in the group: each needs to sit down with their friends (including sandy) and talk about what’s going on, and at least realize what mike is going to end up doing is being a bully and they don’t like bullies cause of their friend who graduated who got bullied for a misunderstanding.

With that out of the way I probably over thought it, but over all it’s a great comic to show the life and struggles of what modethrough. Keep up the great work! =^w^=

I think I know why she is so verbally abusive towards Mike. (unless I’m reading too deeply into it). Think of this from a psychological pov. I believe it’s a combination of the “Guilty accuser” and “repeat it ‘till it’s true” mindsets.

I believe, subconsciously, she is trying to belittle him so that his worth to her diminishes. What she REALLY thinks is stupid is her feelings for him. and as time goes on and her feelings grow, causing her to lash out more in an attempt to make him worthless to her so she can justify her feelings as being “stupid”. At least until more recently when she could no longer deal with it in that manner. I also believe that the same holds true for her actions towards Paulo, but to a lesser extent.

Take it for what you will. *shrugs* I’m no expert in psychology. They’re just my observations.

Gosh you all really are overthinking this xD It seems blatantly obvious to me that Lucy is still in denial over her feelings for Mike, and will continue to be until she admits she loves him later on. If I’m not mistaken, this particular chapter takes place before that happens.

She’s reflecting on their relationship and thinking about it aggressively, obviously, she’s trying to convince herself it really doesn’t mean anything when in reality, it’s everything to her. HE is everything to her, and his words hurt her.

I know it’s slightly off the comic topic but I’ve been wondering what others have been thinking about a past foe whom may be showing up again shortly. mainly the foe from comic chapter moving on page one of six, I know I’ve been reading threw a lot of the older comics and have been wondering what people think about it?

As too Lucy to each there own, I think she should probably think about finding someone she could talk to and maybe open up too as it’s obvious that there is some kind of mental problem there that might be able to be helped with and I’m slightly wondering what more of a key cause for it was cause I don’t think it’s just Mike and the stuff shrouding him. I know I’ve been trying to find something to link as a core problem but the only thing I found was that she was a tom boy (and as such an outcast) from a rather young age and that her mother was always trying to make sure people were not confused on Lucy’s gender.

Ya know maybe that’s just her problem she’s really should of been a born a boy and she’s just gender confused so she’s taking it out on a guy that she’s fallen for because she wants to be ‘that guy’ cause he’s always the center of attention for the lady’s and even the guys.(speaking of Mike at least up to the point where he got together with Sandy)

That’s rather childish.

But screw this. Let’s talk about important stuff, and by that I mean crazy *** cat drama. So yeah, Lucy’s complaining about saving Mike. That’s low. But I bet everyone was in that sort of situation at least once. You have a friend, you’re doing tons of stuff for that friend, and suddenly friend is all like: “Yeah, now gtfo my life”. And suddenly all that stuff you did and felt so right feeks wrong. You think: “What an donkey *** I were to be so naive, and stupid, to sacrifice myself so much”. Lucy is also having that moment. Well yeah I guess right thing for her is leaving Mike alone, just because he’s not megusta anymore. You know, after she saved his life few times, and spend a ton of time together, and I bet even after retcon they did have some good time with videogames and ****. So yeah, in the end she babysitted Mike for years, oblivious, that Sandy will come back, and not even thank her for keeping her seat warm. Maybe I’m wrong but it feels kinda unfair, and so I understand why Lucy is ******.

Commander_Zero November 16, 2012, 4:04 AM EST.

@Commander_Zero

Ya Lucy may of saved his life a few times but she’s also generally been a bit of a bully towards him, at the same time he’s saved her once or twice as well so it’s all about even there I believe.

I know Mike mainly relised this when Abby was giving his anti bully speech to the school I believe that’s what started the hole snow ball, hearing Sandy crying/being sad about his pain also helped give him a push need to try and stand up/break away from her and her bulling.

In general she makes him do something by edging him on and or taunting him until he submits to her, if that doesn’t work she hits him and beats him both physically/verbally until he dose what she wants.

He has also for the most part watched out for her though that could mainly be because she generally sticks to him like super glue when she could.

Edit: I’m not saying that it’s one sided but a lot of problems have been caused by the way Lucy treats him and has treated him in the past and Lucy dose have a tendency to act violent towards people, I’m actually slightly surprised no ones called her out on that though.

I’m also getting a little mad at some of the comments on here, she isn’t being spiteful…she’s just upset. She is recalling one of the most disturbing moments for her and saying if she’d never cared about mike, maybe she wouldn’t have experienced it. Of course she doesn’t mean it that way, but she is in a lot of pain right now, and regret. All we can hope for is that she realizes what she is doing to both herself and mike, and keep away for a while.

Consider the fact that Mike repaid the favour by saving Lucy during chapter 44, by sacrificing himself to be able to throw Lucy back onto the partially collapsed rock bridge.
I can’t believe everyone seem to simply have forgotten about that. Saying that Mike should be thankful toward Lucy because of that she tried to save him during this moment isn’t entirely logical when he has done the same thing for her. I’m just a little bit tired of hearing (reading) that it’s just Mike who should apologize, better up and all that.
And at this point I noticed that @acessssssss have already brought this up, although in a shorter manner. Oh well.

@ All the people saying Lucy was pulled in-

Lucy was NOT pulled in by holding the branch! Lucy ended up letting go when she almost fell in. She then watched Mike hit a rock that knocked him out after he screamed her name. She went to the bottom of the waterfall and after Yashy pointed out his body floating out of the waterfall she was telling herself she didn’t know how to swim but Mike was going to drown and die and she needed to save him! Go back and read “Troubled Waters”! Seriously! She even tried to tell herself over and over that she didn’t know how to swim and she could drown and be rational but she felt she had to save his life.

At this point Lucy is not being resentful, she’s honestly trying to make herself not care. She’s trying to give herself back some independence and tell herself she doesn’t need him to be happy. It’s a part of her own defense mechanism, if she doesn’t care she can’t be hurt, right? At least that is what she is trying to tell herself right now. If she doesn’t care, it won’t hurt so much when Mike does pull away.

She was there for Mike when Mike lost Sandy, but Mike abused that, rather drastically abused that. He kept trying to pretend that Lucy was Sandy. How do you think you would feel if the person you care about is pretending you are someone else? I would be pretty damn ******, and depressed, and I bet for Lucy it just further implies that she will never be good enough for Mike compared to Sandy.

For those who think Lucy was a bitch for pushing Mike away in “December” when he came onto her? Did you consider the fact he had pretended she was Sandy before? Why wouldn’t she push him away if she is afraid that she is once again just the second-best closest replacement for Sandy?

Food for Thought.

@Everyone who is a Mike or Lucy supporter
Can they both be in the wrong? Mike is being crule to Lucy, and has been for a while. He could have handled the situation better, but can’t/ won’t because he thinks he’s the victim. He thinks Lucy just wants someone as a “security blanket”, while never trying to/ not understanding her thoughts on their relationship.
The same can be said for Lucy (except for the last part). She didn’t realise Mike was being hurt by her. More over, it’s plain to see she has some serious emotion problems. shes either 100% shut down, or lets them pile up untill she lashes out. She needs to deal with that herself. I think both are in the wrong. Your opinion depends on if your looking at all the comics, the more recent updates (which favor Lucy), or the old ones (which favored Mike).

Nikita: I find it ironic that you correct the use of ellipsis’ in the comic and then go on to use “irregardless” seriously. “Irregardless” is meaningless; it negates itself. I think you either meant “regardless” or “irrespective”.

As much as I think both of them were jerks, if Lucy did not know how to swim then it is in fact her that was the idiot for jumping in there in the first place. Yes, concern, spur of the moment, wanted to rescue someone she cared for, et cetera. There is a reason most people are taught to leave things like this to people who know what they are doing; she just exacerbated the issue.

But irregardless is fun to say. Incorrect capitalization is just a pain.

Oh gosh, what a lovely flashback chapter so far. This is such a good webcomic. And, everyone should really do their best to understand that at this point both Mike and Lucy have been in the wrong for a while. First it was Lucy, now it’s mostly Mike, but both of them really haven’t handled their situation well. Also, their friends haven’t been much help either. Ugh, the drama… Love it anyways, though. Wonderful, as always!

I really want to know what Mike thought at the time. He didn’t know Paulo saved him, I don’t think he knew Lucy did anything… what DID he think happened? Or did he just block out the whole experience without even seeing a blank span of memory?

Lovely page…I get a lot of emotion from this cause I know what it feels like to be drowning…it’s … so scary.. Thank goodness for Paulo <3 PAULO! ftw

I don’t think Lucy and Mike can rebuild the friendship they had before, something been lost and it won’t ever be quite the same…but maybe they can eventually understand eachothers perspectives and start something new.

I was a Mike X Lucy supporter as well. They key word being WAS. Now I’m just hoping they can scrape together some type of friendship without it being so awkward. Also hoping Mike can stay with Sandy and hopefully Lucy can still be friends with him at the same time.
And I hope Yashi will be alright, ‘cause if you remember in [insert chapter name here] (Can’t remember it DX) Lucy came out and said that Mike wasn’t her ‘Father’ or that he was seeng someone else. And she just flat out broken down in tears.

You need to understand that some people are alergic about any sort of critique. Faster you accept that fact, less likely you end up banned.

@StraightFace
He probably thought Sandy saved him with power of their love, and then proceeded to shove his cell phone up his poo-hole.

@GracefulSerenity
Star well earned. You’ve got a huge point there. To be honest, not only Mike has a problem with “replacement relationship”. Daisy is pretty much doing same thing with Abbey. Probably Paulo sooner or else will start comparing his current girlfriend with Lucy, which will make three of those.

Why I do have the feeling next is the alley way with drunk Mike? This chapter still puzzles me as to why in the chapters after the timeline of this flash back she is still hurting over Mike’s rejection? She it showing sighs that she has gotten over Mike. Something tells me after this digging in Lucy’s memory something, something bad is going to between Mike and Lucy by the end of this flashback.

I also I NOTICED you people are mistaking some chapters: “December” is Mike’s ultimate rejection of Lucy, you people are thinking of the flashback in “Pillow Talk”. Besides it does snow in months other than December.

To be honest when I heard there was more intermission the 1st thought was in my mind was “see you in 11 weeks -_-” but now I am actually interested in this chapter.

@ Someone

You are correct, I did put “December” when I meant “Pillow Talk”, but people still understood what I meant so that is what really matters. I was under the impression that the incident probably happened around Christmas break before they entered high school, hence the association with the month December. Thank you for pointing that out though can’t believe I missed that mistake! :D

@ Commander_Zero

Thank you! You are spot on as well, Daisy really is using Abbey as a surrogate for Mike. I think the reason why Lucy got so snippy with Daisy during “Pillow Talk” when Daisy was dreaming about Mike is because she knows how much it would hurt Abbey to know he is just a replacement for Mike. Abbey is pretty much the closest to being like Mike out of the group, so he is the prefect replacement for Mike, to Daisy. Daisy really needs to work on getting over Mike though, her feelings for him will break apart her relationship with Abbey if she’s not careful. She also needs to get over Augustus, as much as I like Augustus he really was a bad influence on her, and brought out that darker side of her that probably should stay in the shadows.

Mike and Liam both used Lucy as a surrogate for the girls they were in love with. If I were Lucy that would give me some serious issues with being able to trust a guy. Not one, but two different guys were using her as a replacement for the girls they loved. Lucy might be one of the more coveted girls based off of appearance but in her own mind she probably feels she will always but be second best and a replacement, which is very sad.

Out of all of them I think Paulo is probably the least likely to compare the girl he is with against another girl, or use another girl as a surrogate or replacement. Even when David had him compare Tess and Daisy he never really used one as a basis to compare the other. He treats each girl differently based on their personality and their needs. Even if he does find himself attracted to the girls with more curvy figures he still would pick Daisy because of her personality and how much he cares about her. He has made it apparent he feels she deserves the world and would pick her over pretty much all the others. He picked her over Tess and if you look at the Ask Roseville High he would pick to save Daisy if he could only save one of the girls. Even if Lucy is his first romantic pick, Daisy would still be on the top of his list. Even if he is a jerk he treats each girl as their own person, with their own traits instead of just comparing them.

So Mike goes and is all like “Oh I can’t ignore her like I did in 1st grade” Then he goes and breaks that promise anyway. Then Lucy is now calling mike an idiot and moron blah blah blardy blah covering up the fact she told him she liked him? :/ sometimes I get so frusterated with this comic I just can’t stop reading it cause its so awesome and that made no sense….. Lets try again- It frusterates me that the characters can’t make up there minds and cause so much drama that I just have to keep reading to find out what they do next. (There we go!) Which makes this internet comic so freakishly amazing!! 8-D

@A man with a paperbag To be honest, I think Sandy has kind of poisoned Mike’s mind against Lucy. I mean, he clearly wouldn’t have saved her if he really hated her. It’s not fair to just stab her back like that. Ok, so they were even after they saved each other’s lives. Mike could have been the good guy of the situation just like he used to, and continued to tollerate her. That’s what made him so noble, but now… You have to admit, ending your own friendship is hard, but trying to take away your other friends too? That’s just cruel, almost evil. Go back to the “december” chapter (I think). It’s all there. He’s being so cruel as to threaten to take her friends from her. What kind of decent person does that?

True, but when you actually (at least believe you) hate someone after a series of traumatic events and a long time with what you considered to be bullying, wouldn’t you too be able to forget rationality?
I might not look enough into all of this to see the whole picture, but all I want is that people DO and see that Mike isn’t the only one to blame for the current situation Lucy has found herself in (that is the chapter where Lucy tells Yashi Mike isn’t Yashi’s dad).

It’s so sad that the situation is taking Lucy through such a self-depricating period. She is even coming to doubt her decisions on that fateful day.

@A man with a paperbag I agree, they are both in the wrong, and it of course isn’t all Lucy’s fault. She was a bit rough with him, but that’s just the way she is. She’s kinda guyish, if you consider it in those terms. Guys who are friends beat each other up all the time over simple stuff (jokingly of course), and Lucy isn’t really entitled to that for any reason. But once again, I’ll return to what I said about Mike. Being as spiteful as he was, and promising to take away HER friends? That is on a level of bullying that a person does not deserve to be a victim of. The fact that Mike, who was so hoborable and noble before, has descended BEYOND the level of scum that is Paulo, makes me really… disappointed. Mike is much more in the wrong than Lucy. I just hope in the end they make up. You know, at least become friends again. I wouldn’t mind them being a couple either.

well, mike is a total stupid or what lucy have said about him. he would really do anything JUST for sandy. But he really didn’t do. and if Lucy didn’t saved mike, he would die. He should be thankful to her. Since Mike don’t understand what sandy mean, since he knows that sandy says that Lucy just have to treat him right. I’m not sure if Mike would do what sandy will say…

@Wr3h: Mike and Paulo getting hit by a surprise snowball to the back of their heads as they were walking away from Lucy’s house in winter at 2 separate occasions. Do you think someone else had something to do with these very similar events? Other than Chirpy, Yashy and Lily(Yashy, Chirpy and Blur have emoticons why not have one for Lily too?) or maybe I completely missed the point again. 8-)

I don’t really understand, I know this is after summer vacation correct? If so has Lucy told Mike she “loves” him? I still I am really confused how we go from “I can’t stand you” kind of Lucy to a “I can’t live without you” kind of Lucy.
