there's a short story I read in... grade 8? can't remember what is was called, but it was about a lumberjack (you're right Anon 1) who had a really bad temper (like Abby) and would hit anybody or anything around him (including his wife, who he promised NEVER to harm). One day he did hit her (not on purpose, it was on the back-swing) so he promised he would never hurt her and in doing so, cut off his own hand as a reminder.
... at least that's what I remember from it... not even sure if that was the reference(but it fits Ab's personality, does it not?)
