Look closely. The drawing at the top shows them really happy as kids, the middle shows them somewhat happy with each other in middle school,(hence the solid color scarf) and the bottom has them separated as high schoolers.(hence the striped scarf to show that it happens later.) the whole thing is surrounded by a rope, which intertwines in the middle, and has them holding the ends. It shows how they've grown together and then apart again, but their destiny continues to be intertwined.
