I’m hoping Abbey wins this; nothing against Sue, I just like Abbey better. Also, I disagree with Paulo, because then Abbey would be expelled due to him winning (like I said).

I find i sorta agree with abbey. As some one who was bullied through out primary and high school i can see where he is coming from. If i were to address the issue correctly tho i would have a 3 strikes no tolerance system. You mess up 3 times your out, but not loosely, i was at a school that had a similar system but to get a strike you basically had to kill some one(not really but you get the point) That way you can make a mistake or 2 and still be around as well as feel mounting pressure not to bully people as you can see your own doom incoming with the loss of strikes.

Mind you the bullying has done some good for me, im tough as nails now, no one can fluster me or upset me. But i think i would have preferred happy and safe formative years as apposed to growing up to be an angry tank.

Awww poor Abbey, he obviously still has some deep physiological issues going on here. But I respect what he’s trying to do, he’s just going at it all wrong. He’s just trying to rid the world of bullies, but doesn’t realize/care how complicated it is. I feel so bad for him now

Abbeys first mistake was his reaction too paulos question. He could have instead emberassed Paulo by asking him a series of questions starting with somthing like “care to Elaborate?” his second was loseing his calm. By responding to each of sues questions with a calm voice he could have easily made her look like a raving idiot he instead ended up killing any chance of winning due to poor presentation

First rule of debate is to stick to your guns. If your opposition successfully plays to your emotions the debate derails far off track and your entire argument is moot. If Abbey were to go back to the original question with a cooler head and derail Sue subtly, he’d be back on the right track.

Won’t happen though. :B

Edit: Hell, if he kept cool after his first melt down he could put it back on track and redeemed himself and made Sue look like a mudslinger in one fell swoop. Right now he just looks like a child who isn’t getting his own way. I could go on all day. Debate drama!

The hyperbole is no more ridiculous than Abbey’s view of the issue (not to suggest that two wrongs make a right, here). However, we’ve also just been given keen insight into why Abbey doesn’t see anything necessarily wrong with his use of violence against bullies in the past, and it has everything to do with the fact that he couches the entire situation in terms of Good Guys and Bad Guys with no Greys. Bad Guys attack innocents, and Good Guys protect innocents. Because bullies are clearly the bad guys here, and Abbey fights against, them, then he is a Good Guy. The ends justify the means; it doesn’t matter how he defends the innocents, it only matters that he does.

I still hope that Sue beats him in the race, but less because I disagree with his policies and more because I don’t think holding the position, even just in student government, would be good for his mental health.

Personally I cannot agree that the end justifies the means and that power should be concentrated in Abbey’s hands as sole arbiter as it brings up a whole new debate. “Who guards the guards?” Inherently Abbey may be doing the right thing but he has already proven himself to be no better than what he claims to be fighting against, using people as political props; scare tactics to silence dissent; failing to remain collected. Absolutist statements also do not help Abbey’s case.

That aside what is so wrong with bullies? Are people so weak-minded that they believe that there is no such thing as life after high school; that the hierarchies that are built in high school will just crumble upon graduation?

This is where the debate should end, in a situation like this.

And Abbey looks like he’s relapsing. Poor guy. It’s not that all that therapy didn’t help him - it did- but he’s going to need more than just a summer’s worth of therapy. Traumatic experiences may take longer to get through for some people. Plus, let’s face it, Abbey has a temper. When you’re really passionate about something, it can boil your blood. I know from personal experiences because Italians are that way. You see it as either passion or a really nasty temper.

But Sue has made some good points. Some bullies, like Tess, don’t deserve expulsion. Tess is one of those that is repenting for what she did, even if most of the school still doesn’t like her. That alone is punishment enough, but to expell her would be overkill. In fact, I’m sure a good portion of the school would be missing.

I’d be scared if I were Tess too. Completely unable to do anything in the face of this verbal violence, because it is scary. But it would be kudos to her if she did stand up and say something to dispel the situation.

I understand what abby is coming from. I too was bullied from 1st grade to the first part of high school. Lickly it ended at high school. i was alone and none cared. but i made great friends in high school and that changed alot.

But i agree with sue. that not all bullies cannot change. some or little can.

but there should be a no tolerance policy towards bullying. it really must end the bullying now.

I think they are both right to a degree, the school does need to up its policies if random people are wandering in and harassing students, and we have seen a significant lack of any teacher intervention. Have we even seen any teachers who aren’t disembodied voices in front of classrooms? In high school many students do form influential mentor relationships to teachers and this comic hasn’t shown that.
The school needs to protect students, from themselves and each other. However expulsion won’t help reform any bullies, won’t help them, after all bullies in this case are kids too, not adult convicts, they should be separated from their victims, but kids can change, like Tess, if someone tries to understand why they lash out. I agree with Sue, but her name calling reflects poorly on debating skills, but many adult politicians are much, much worse.

Where do you draw the line between bullying and just a minor argument or fall out?

After being through the entirety of Primary school and the first couple of years of Comprehensive (5 - 12/13) with bullying from several different people, one of them who I’m actually a good friend with, I can tell you absolute punishment doesn’t mean absolute saftey, it’s the same principle of the death penalty, except the addition of the fact it simply moves the problem somewhere else.

If someone constantly annoyed me for 3 days, then completley forgot about me, is that bullying?

No.

What about 4 days? 5 days? 6 days?

What behaviour counts as bullying, I mess around with freinds, and some pretty offensive banter gets thrown around most of the time, if there is a misunderstanding or series of misunderstandings, is that bullying.

Most ‘bullies’ don’t try to torture or abuse people, most don’t think it’s pleasurable or fun, I know many people who, in high school, claimed they were being bulled, when in actual fact they were just being rich kids with superiority complexes.

Whilst they got help, several others I knew who faced actual bullying for over a year received no support.

Bullying isn’t a single, definable thing, and it’s an overused term.

Anyone who uses ‘rot in hell’ obviously has some serious issues, most bullies don’t know any better, some do, it’s a situation-by-situation matter.

I’m going to go find something better to do with my time.

We know pretty much nothing about him ‘cause like Tess, he was introduced as a new character separate from all the old friends. I imagine he was put through hell something fierce.

That would explain a lot. Only a victim could perhaps really find it impossible to be objective.

Besides, who is to say what real bullying is? I imagine there are all types….

I think Abbey is rather biased, here. Considering his history, it is understandable, but I figure someone as smart as him should take that into account.
I’m leaning more towards Sue’s ideals, but I don’t think she shouldn’t approach them with complete ignorance in mind. Which I doubt she would, Abbey just seems to be taking it that way.

Though, we haven’t heard much of what Sue thinks, just that she thinks Abbey’s decisions are too extreme, so I guess I don’t actually know her true ideals for this topic.

I wouldn’t call his reaction so overly dramatic and say its more trauma or his overly passionate ideas. But I’m sure someone thought of this in the other 200+ comments, so I’m just tooting another persons horn at this point.

I get the feeling this won’t end well for our good friend, Abby. An outburst like that is the kind of thing a leader isn’t supposed to have. It at least gives the impression that personal beliefs are getting in the way of good decision making and no amount of words can justify that.

This story is getting very in-depth and very deep. I still remember when this comic was all about comedy, but now its got a beautiful and progressing story with wonderful character development, moments that would make even a hardened man tear up and it still keeps some comedy here and there; and on top of that, the comedy is placed far enough apart, that you get a good laugh every time.

I’ll applaud this comic. Its beautiful, well written and enjoyable. Here’s to you, Bittersweet Candy Bowl. Here’s to you.

@That Guy With No Name Sue’s issue is not that Abbey wants to punish bullies. Her issue is that Abbey is advocating immediate expulsion for bullying. He has presented his stance as being one that supports immediate expulsion of bullies regardless of the offence. Beating up on someone? Expulsion. Glaring at someone menacingly and making them afraid of you? Expulsion.

It’s akin to advocating for life imprisonment for shoplifting: It stops shoplifting, yes. But it will also drive some would-be shoplifters to show up with guns and clean out the tills. Zero-tolerance does not, never has, and never will work, unless your only goal is to take a larger number of minor offences and turn them into a fewer number of serious offences.

It was also a general comment about hierarchies in society that was phrased as sort of a snide remark on teenagers/iteration of my personal view. As it appears to me the prevalent view in high school is that it is the be all end all of one’s young life. I was merely commenting that the bullies don’t go away after high school but that’s a whole other vein of thought.

Reading through the comments section on this actually scares me.

Bullying is a complex issue and forcing a kid who has been bullying to leave the school and go somewhere else does not fix /anything/.

I have been bullied. I know what it’s like. None of the kids who bullied me even got punished at all. I asked people who knew them how they are several years later in high school. One was a very nice, supportive member of the basketball team, the other I personally began to become a friendly acquaintance of.

Bullies are people too, you know. If I heard someone suggest Abbey’s policy in my school, I would quite frankly want to go to a different high school if it passed. Plenty of people, including myself, have gone into the realm of bullying without even noticing. And a rule like that is too easy to twist to someone’s advantage.

Reminds me of an Ozy and Millie comic, where a bully kept pushing a girl over, but when she finally got the courage to defend herself and punch back, she got in trouble, and not the bully.

Reading this with Phoenix Wright corned music felt weird. Very weird.
