I wanted to put this scene in Ten Seconds to Midnight after everyone was freaking out about Mike’s scarf, but I totally forgot about it! I planned to draw it and integrate it into the old chapter, but now I guess it ends up here. I like Tess and Mike’s relationship, it’s kind of an amicable one that hasn’t been explored very much in the comic. They’re good friends.
Where the hell is Nickita?
HIC July 25, 2013, 1:00 PM EST.
The last three panels of these past few pages have had exactly the same pacing. It’s uncanny.

Why haven’t we had more Tess lately? She makes everything better. Also, scared Mike is adorable and I hope to see much more of him in the future.

Don’t want this one to be ruined too
Don’t worry Mike, this time when the crazy feminists come for you, your scarf will be fine!

Sylvia July 25, 2013, 1:05 PM EST.
I have to say Mike is correct this time. And of course that scarf is of nice quality, Err… Sandy gave it to him (I am not quite sure).
Sue is not “reckless”. Or Mike may be going be with Lucy.
HongKat July 25, 2013, 1:06 PM EST.
Mike screwed everything up and now everyone’s okay with him? Wackey changes in the script, TAKE TWO:
JIMMYJON July 25, 2013, 1:07 PM EST.
Yeah, Sandy gets quality scarves. She can do that because she’s AWESOME.
…wait, I thought that other scarf from Tess was just a scarf she happened to have around…when did she go out and get him one? Or am I thinking of the wrong thing here?
Anyways, LOVE this page. It’s just kinda silly, what with Tess’ ‘I am upset’ face in the second to last panel, and Mike’s whole ‘oh god why is this happening’ and…EAHGH!
Even better is that you just KNOW Tess is messing with him here in that last panel. It’s just like ‘Imma murder you! LOL just kidding!’ This whole thing’s just both adorable and hilarious!
Oceanus92 July 25, 2013, 1:08 PM EST.
The Harry Potter scarf is the one she is mentioning or am I thinking wrong?

HongKat July 25, 2013, 1:09 PM EST.
At first I was like, “Oh my god,Tess! I can’t believe it!”. She looked so hurt it was scary, because she never seemed that sensitive. But the she’s just like, “♥”. And I’m like,”AHAHAHAHAHA, Tess you funny little rasdf;^gho&k!!”. I missed Tess, she’s a good character and I like her. Is there going to be a story of her graduation in the future?
Meow July 25, 2013, 1:10 PM EST.
@hongkat if i recall right it was indeed sandy who gave him it.
nightarix July 25, 2013, 1:11 PM EST.
Sue looks quite confused in the last panel.
Chrisd765 July 25, 2013, 1:12 PM EST.
Sandy got a lucky find on that scarf. Sue’s face is just… I mean look at her….
Anyway, I know one reason why girls are picking on him but Tess’ is… I can’t say….
Keyblade Dragon July 25, 2013, 1:12 PM EST.
Aaaah I love you Tess
Gasz July 25, 2013, 1:14 PM EST.
@smegirl and @sammy:
it seems you didn’t read my comment in the previous page. it would have probably changed your reply to Commander_Zero. here it is:
yay finally mike gets some suffering. lol (and he’s actually ok with it. he finally understood it’s his fault, so stop complaining please) edit, since in this page he actually complains: he would be angry if he wasn’t ok with it. he just knows they don’t exactly know what he did, so he still wonders why they treat him this way (and we know why: they are practically certain that what happened to lucy is his fault).
also sue is neither adult nor a psychiatrist. why would people expect her to act as if she was one, I do not know.
sue never said anything about lucy hurting mike because to them (their friends) it ALWAYS appeared obvious that mike was ok with it. hell, he even said “I like your punches in my face” once.
also sue and the others were disappointed when mike said no to lucy because, again, to them he ALWAYS seemed interested in lucy (and he was). they weren’t used to the existence of sandy as his girlfriend, yet. in fact, if you go read the chapter again, they stop blaming him IMMEDIATELY as soon as he gives proof of her existence (only daisy had no doubts, obv) and finally makes them understand it’s something serious.
don’t read only comments in response to yours.
also sammy, go to see in december how much we talked about that “mike is an “abusive relationship victim”“. but my comment above should be enough to make you change idea.
boh... July 25, 2013, 1:18 PM EST.
oh you guys
But be careful Tess, I think you almost broke Mike
SIGxMUNDx808 July 25, 2013, 1:21 PM EST.
I demand more Tess. Miss her so.
Dudeler July 25, 2013, 1:25 PM EST.
The thing I love the most about this is that when Tess gives Mike the scarf she’s just like “ah, yeah, you can keep it, I don’t need that one.”
Idastar July 25, 2013, 1:39 PM EST.
@Boh it doesn’t change my mind. It just makes me think you’re kinda condescending and dont understand how abuse works.
1 - it doesn’t matter whether the victim complains or not - abuse is abuse. Most people who have actually been abused dont complain because they begin to see it as normal. I know because I have a friend who has been there.
2 - You don’t have to be an adult or a psychiatrist to understand that strangling your friend and punching him on a regular basis is wrong. Mike made it clear he wanted nothing more to do with Lucy. So Sue goes out of her way to force them together in the play. They all know he is going out with Sandy. They call him a jerk for essentially not cheating on her.
Now, I know Mikes behaviour in December went too far. I’m not saying he didn’t, but what I’m saying is his friends treat him like crap. They treat Lucy like this delicate, wonderful snowflake who is just misunderstood, but they don’t ever stand up for him when he’s being beaten up. BOTH characters were wrong, but if Lucy hadn’t abused him for 10 years, or maybe one of the others had actually called her out on it I doubt December would have even happend.
This page makes me dislike them even more. Tess just walks past after seeing Mike get strangled and doesn’t even respond. Sue isn’t angry or anything, she just seems calm after seriously hurting him (considering she choked him so hard she was surprised at the strength of the scarf).
It genuinely worries me that the commenters are so cool with this. if mike and Sues genders were reversed there would be an outcry.
Smegirl July 25, 2013, 1:41 PM EST.
Haha, I like Tess. We have similar ways of messing with our friends .
Trubeque July 25, 2013, 1:43 PM EST.
For me it was something like a sad story (to me, of course).
as it is the first time I see the comic.
I have seen many comic: Bionicle, Sonic, marvel, etc.
only to tell the creator or creators of comic BCB is …
Nice-Hero July 25, 2013, 1:51 PM EST.
This is when Tess gave him the “Harry potter” scarf http://www.bittersweetcandybowl.com/c25/p1.html It sorta just appears when he goes to Tess’ to get out of the cold. It was used to replace the one that got covered with blood and what not when Paulo made the girls think that Mike was a cheater and beat him up
bunnyclub July 25, 2013, 1:53 PM EST.
Oh! and other things …
look what i found this video to be seen.
Nice-Hero July 25, 2013, 1:54 PM EST.
Did you know a person with depression can appear perfectly fine and still be deeply depressed? The same holds true for an abuse victim. They can appear fine on the outside and can even convince themselves they like a certain type of treatment even though they’re being harmed. Just because Mike said he liked Lucy punching him once does not make him any less an abuse victim.
(Mind you, I view both Lucy and Mike victims of each other’s actions, and see both of them roughly equally at fault for this fine mess they made.)
Chronos July 25, 2013, 1:56 PM EST.
Mike’s all sad. It could be a lot worse for him though.

your right, Chronos.

Interesting how no one seems to have noticed how Sue was just strangling Mike.
Were they really all THAT occupied that they saw nothing?
ravengal July 25, 2013, 2:18 PM EST.
Hahaha awww poor Mike. Tess come on now that was a little mean.
Lizzie July 25, 2013, 2:18 PM EST.
Man, I really have to say this chapter has some of the best expressions I’ve seen since this comic began with Lucy and Mike playing “Sonic Rider”.
Tess’s face on panel 7 seems to convey pain, as well as anger, judging by the way her face kind of pinches up. Then on panel 9 there is no color and Tess is giving him that thousand-mile-cold-as-the-artic stare, all of which is great.
Then on the last panel we see that Tess was just messing around with Mike. I am really enjoying this chapter so far, it has a fine balance between the heavy and the light stuff. I also enjoy how when things start to become really serious, it transitions to a nice light tone very smoothly.
Keep up the great work, Tae. Your ability to draw and script have come a long, good ways.
Blank On Purpose July 25, 2013, 2:33 PM EST.
Give this man a cookies, I’ve been saying this for to long. Thank
mister o July 25, 2013, 2:41 PM EST.
Not trying to imply that Mike deserves to be picked on, but… one of the reasons he’s picked on is that he’s easy to pick on.
darklion July 25, 2013, 2:45 PM EST.
Occupied? Probably not. I’m sure they noticed. But…
Did they care? Probably not. I mean, c’mon. Sue strangling Mike? Not like she’s going to kill him or anything.
Anyway, I’m happy to see the lightheartedness bleeding back into the comic after all that dark and depressing stuff earlier. Obviously, we’ve still got some HUGE problems to resolve, but taking a break is good. And in other news…Go Tess!
Keep up the fantastic work Taeshi!

For a sec I thought she really was freaked over the scarf thing!
I wish Tess didn’t’ have to leave at the end of this school year, she’s so awesome.
P.S. seriously Mike, man up a bit.
Death of Ink July 25, 2013, 3:04 PM EST.
Good god guys, why is everyone still talking about the whole Lucy/Mike treatment thing when it’s obvious that Taeshi is trying to make this more lighthearted for once? The reactions I’ve seen here is essentially “Since the drama’s not really being played up for now, we’ll insert the drama into comments section instead”.
It’s rather obvious that Tess did it just to tease him in a friendly way. Also, given how Sue seems to have backed off right after the choking, she was essentially “scolding” Mike in a way a friend would; her scarf-choke was essentially the same thing as telling Mike “Geez Mike, you’re a twit sometimes” but leaving it at that because she probably could tell that Mike was feeling bad about everything too. Smegirl’s comment makes no sense, because the scarf strangle was obviously something that didnt actually hurt Mike and had no malicious intent behind it; it was just a goofy action which would’ve been similar to a guy giving a girl a comedic clonk on the head (the Bokke/Sukke routine). They’re showing that they’re Mike’s friends, willing to friendly tease him and scold him, but not so much as to make him miserable for things he already feels bad about.
Is there no way that people here could just appreciate the light-heartedness of these past few pages, especially after how depressing the past few chapters ended up?
Edit: Just to make sure: I know that not everyone is acting like that, but it’s still surprising just how many people are not willing to let the whole Lucy/Mike friend-drama-thingamajig rest.
Deiser July 25, 2013, 3:06 PM EST.
i think….. mike… you should run… before everyone star killing you
maybe you shoul escape jumping out of the windows…. because………just because ….. awesome
the lord inquisitor bob July 25, 2013, 3:17 PM EST.
My god, Tess’ face in the second to last panel… Freaking priceless.
I’m glad the story’s gotten a bit lighter recently, though… and then there’s the AbbeyxDaisyxPaulo triangle-thing that I totally saw coming. But whatevs, Daisy deserves to have boys fight over her.
Tess and Sue are great at messing with Mikey… though I’m pretty sure Sue was aiming to strangle him for realsies. I mean, her face in the last panel screams, “WTF are you doing I need answers not head rubs.”
Thanks for being so awesome, Taeshi! You rock!
Sashimi July 25, 2013, 3:17 PM EST.
I think there’s drama in the comments. I don’t know though because I don’t read the comments anymore xD anyways, does anyone else feel that the girls are a tag team and ganging up on Mike? This is funny xD
Gabria93 July 25, 2013, 3:21 PM EST.
Well, Mike just wanted to match Sandy. But, he could swap his scarf now and then and alternate. Or… he could have a blue scarf with green stripes!

EDIT: We were not.
EvilCoffeeInc July 25, 2013, 4:25 PM EST.
@Smegirl and @Chronos:
guys he said “I like your punches in my face” when he was DRUNK!!!! people don’t lie when they are drunk!!!!!!
you are making a fuss about something that never hurt mike (emotionally, that is the most important thing), because it doesn’t matter how you put it, but lucy’s beatings were there FOR COMIC PURPOSES. if taeshi wants from us to take them seriously now, well we just can’t (not pretending to talk for everyone, just those that agree with this). she would better have to rewrite the story. it’s actually not a bad idea, the story right now has nothing of the initial very humoristic tone, that simply makes this “lucy always abused mike” thing inconsistent to say the least (in fact now, whenever she puts in that type of humor, everybody cries “the abuse!!!!!!!!! omgggg!!!”). she could even take the chance to remove the pets from the beginning.
anyway, the thing that you don’t get is that mike doesn’t actually care much for the physical injuries lucy gave him, but for not being honest with him from the beginning. he felt “used” by her as a, I don’t even know how to call it, “not-boyfriend” or something, practically leaving him there to wait for her for eternity. and the thing that made him snap (at first he was only sad, then he started hating her), is the fact that she confessed to him when it was too late. it sounded like “it happens I always loved you, but I tell you only now that you are with another girl”. “well thank you very much for having “wasted” so many years of my life, lucy” I would think. and yeah, the fact that the others blamed him for saying “no” didn’t help him to not hate her. fortunately they stopped soon, or else he would have left the table way earlier.
boh... July 25, 2013, 4:34 PM EST.
she’s such a troll it’s wonderful
Vega July 25, 2013, 4:38 PM EST.
@Smegirl: Well that depends… is the person a friend that you trust or just some random person you just met? Mike didn’t really think she was going to do anything too harsh or he would have done something about it like resist and kick her away. Now if some stranger started doing that to him, then somebody would be getting their butt whooped.
It is true that this isn’t exactly socially acceptable behavior and I would prefer that it stops happening. However, I can still understand that these are teenage friends and they like to mess with each other. Maybe you should take a moment to try understanding that yourself?
I know, I know. This is a ‘pot calling the kettle black’ moment since I often take these situations a bit too seriously myself. It’s just that this situation could have been a lot worse… actually it still could. You are probably wondering what could be worse than being fake-strangled by a friend. Well, how about being ganged up by them for doing something that you felt needed to be done. Mike severed ties with Lucy a bit harshly and now he’s just sitting there and taking his punishment as he feels that he should.
Is it right for him to let others punish him like this for something they don’t even know about? Most likely not, but he is feeling guilty and he feels that he deserves it. I think it is wrong for him to feel this way, but who am I to judge an emotional teenager for his actions or even for his inaction?
Now about Sue… If she had wished Mike severe harm, then she could have told the others about her suspicions and let the fireworks commence or she could have applied more pressure and used her leg on him for leverage or simply she could have continued with her strangling until Mike ended up unconscious(or worse). She could have made the situation worse for Mike in so many ways, but she would inevitably draw attention to herself and it would not have ended well. Luckily, Sue doesn’t have enough evidence about Lucy’s disappearance to want to kill Mike even if she wanted to(she doesn’t want to kill him just to make it clear to you).
supertails19 July 25, 2013, 4:48 PM EST.
So after nearly choking Mike to death, Sue can only comment on the quality of the scarf.
Then Tess decides it’s time to screw with Mike’s head. honestly I liked Tess better with long hair, the short hair just looks a little rough, like the scissors were dull.
Anon-Anon July 25, 2013, 4:50 PM EST.
sometimes when somebody loves somebody who hurts them, their brain makes them think they like it. it makes them think the deserve it.
It doesn’t matter what Mike said, abuse towards anyone is wrong. As for “It never hurt him emotionally” - He genuinely believed she didn’t care about him, and that he was just a security blanket for her to use. He believed if he died, she would just find somebody else.
As for “TAESHI INTENDS FOR IT TO BE FUNNY LOL1!1!!!!1” The story has changed. Taeshi is deconstructing the tsundere - she is showing us the actual reaction to treating to somebody that way.
Now listen - you are entitled to your opinion about the characters. That is fine. but what isn’t fine is excusing the actions of an abusive partner because “He likes it really” - no. It sounds to me like you are lucky enough to have never been abused, which is good, but take it from me - abuse of any kind, physical or emotional, especially if it began in childhood and has been going on for a long time changes the way peoples brains work.
Saying Mike said “I like your punches” when he was drunk once does not excuse her beating him up all the time. and FYI - people do lie when they are drunk. I got drunk once and told dad I’d bought an elephant.
Smegirl July 25, 2013, 4:54 PM EST.
Ehhh I’m not liking how the characters are acting at the moment. there’s a lot of meanness.
the Art is beautiful as always though.
Ramona July 25, 2013, 4:56 PM EST.
=/ well that was a total let down.
I really got my hopes up that everyone would finally find out what happened to Lucy, but nope.
I just hope Sue brings up the topic again now that Tess is done messing around with Mike.
Lunacy July 25, 2013, 4:58 PM EST.
People are so worked up about whole Mike supporters versus Lucy supporters that pointing out comical nature of said abuse seems like getting atop the fourth wall and ******* on everyone.
Anyway your theory seems legit. Though I would say that Mike felt Lucy endangered his current relationship. And to be honest I think he still “likes” her. Probably likes her to much, and he doesn’t want to admit it, even though he’s aware of his feelings. And his December rant was his way of saving his current relationship. If he can’t control his own feelings he can at least make it imposible for him and Lucy to be together.
Why do I think so? In December Mike wasn’t hostile towards Lucy all the time. He seemed to cheer up when she invited him to play videogames with her. Remember his troubled expression when he looked on both videogame controller and his cell phone?
NO! WE WILL BATHE IN DRAMA! DRINK IT! RUB IT ALL OVER OUR NAKED BODIE… Ok now that’s just gross. Anyway yeah, Mike looked totally abused on that panel when Sue started strangling him.
Though I must admit it is confusing. Lucy’s previous actions were also depicted in light - hearted manner. And now suddenly due to few flashbacks we’re supposed to take those fun moments seriously.
- cut, cut cut -
I wrote a lenghty answer to your post, but I removed it. You’re posts are ridiculous. And you’re getting all Oprah about antropomorphic cats.
Commander_Zero July 25, 2013, 5:13 PM EST.
I am late.
Nikita July 25, 2013, 5:22 PM EST.
Tess!! I’ve missed her :3. Good to see that she’s not giving Mike too much hell; same goes with Sue, though maybe the strangling was a bit much o.O
Chocothunda July 25, 2013, 5:38 PM EST.
@commander Zero - it’s not the comic that bothers me - its how female abuse on male is treated like something that is funny or isn’t serious whereas male on female is serious business.
My posts aren’t ridiculous - they’re completely true. Most abuse victims internalise the blame on themselves and make themselves feel like they deserve it - that is the point I’m trying to make.
If you have a legitimate argument against that then actually let me know - I only know one person who has been abused so maybe it varies from victim to victim.
Smegirl July 25, 2013, 5:50 PM EST.
Also you used the wrong “your”. “Your posts are rediculous”.
You’re means “you are”. Your means belonging to or coming from
Smegirl July 25, 2013, 5:52 PM EST.
@Smegirl - I agree with you but also think you need to calm down.
Seriously, I know male abuse victims are seriously under supported, but by getting angry and argumentative you’re only hurting your own cause.
One of the things I’ve found on the comments is when people have a favourite character, they will whitewash everything bad they do. It’s the same the other way, hence why Mike is suddenly an unrelenting jerkass who has never done anything right - it’s just how fans work. We all do it, to different degrees.
Hence why I try not to look at the comments - maybe try the forums instead? x
Ramona July 25, 2013, 5:55 PM EST.
yeah I remember about that subject, I agree with you. I’m not so sure he actually still loves her right now, though.
“it was just a goofy action which would’ve been similar to a guy giving a girl a comedic clonk on the head (the Bokke/Sukke routine)”
EXACLTYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY @Smegirl why don’t you understand it for god’s sake
that’s also the way lucy has ALWAYS acted with mike. your replies show that you don’t want to accept it. but it’s a fact.
sometimes when somebody loves somebody who hurts them, their brain makes them think they like it. it makes them think the deserve it. “
you are making a fuss about something that never hurt mike (emotionally, that is the most important thing), because it doesn’t matter how you put it, but lucy’s beatings were there FOR COMIC PURPOSES.
“It doesn’t matter what Mike said, abuse towards anyone is wrong. As for “It never hurt him emotionally” - He genuinely believed she didn’t care about him, and that he was just a security blanket for her to use. He believed if he died, she would just find somebody else.”
he actually started believing so not for the beatings but for her general attitude. and you know why? because LUCY’S BEATINGS WERE THERE FOR FRIGGIN’ COMIC PURPOSES FOR GOD’S SAKE
“The story has changed. Taeshi is deconstructing the tsundere - she is showing us the actual reaction to treating to somebody that way.”
just no. it simply won’t work. it’s illogical (even for their world, since the only differences are actually the species of the most intelligent animals and the fact that pets are as intelligent as their owners) and I can’t rationally accept that certain past actions that are in a certain way don’t count anymore as they should, giving incoherent “outputs”.
“people do lie when they are drunk.”
ok then. ask Taeshi (with “Veronica’s Formspring”) if mike was sincere. if you don’t want to, I’ll do it.
boh... July 25, 2013, 6:04 PM EST.
Heh, english is my second language, so yeah, grammar errors are rather common in my posts.
You said you’re against female abuse on male treated like something funny. Well that’s part of the comic. And yeah, this was portrayed as comical. It takes more than few flashbacks to change that. And now Mike is yet again “abused” yet it looks like a cartoon.
You ever watched Tom and Jerry? Full of abuse. Though it never bothered me that mouse was violent towards the cat and vice versa. Only thing that bothered me about this cartoon was a fact that said mouse was a real douche yet somehow he was portrayed as a good guy.
We have same situation with Mike. He’s a good guy since he’s cute, smart, and polite. Unless he’s acting like mother of all d-bags.
And I agree that abuse is not oh-kay. Still boys and girls are different. I know that nowadays media are claiming that it doesn’t matter what you have between your legs. You can have sex with anything you want (unless its a toaster, that is plugged), you can go to a clinic and change your tool to something else, hell women can even pee while standing! Of course most likely they’ll have to go wash their legs afterwards but no one will dare to say they can’t do what they want to do! Still boys and girls ARE different. World in the eyes of a dude is not the same world that is being seen by a chick. If a girl is abused and she thinks it is okay what does it mean? That she’s stupid? No. Mostly there are many reasons. Fear of being alone for example. Girls are more sensitive. Males on the other hand are mostly strong. While it’s rather easy to make a girl cry, telling exact same thing to a guy will most likely cause him to hit you. This is why female abuse and male abuse are very different. I’m not saying it’s alright, but males are mostly less dependant which means they’re more likely to leave abusive partner, and more likely to handle situation themselves.
BUT all this doesn’t matter. Because we’re discussing a COMIC STRIP SITUATION now. And you’re getting worked up about COMIC STRIP SITUATION, because we weren’t discussing real life situation before. We discussed MIKE and LUCY, both COMIC STRIP CHARACTERS.
Woah, woah, woah, before doing anything reckless like calling Taeshi, we should as ourselves one, very important question:
If a snake would swallow a spider, would said spider bite snake while being inside of him?
Stop acting sane. You’re ruining the mood…
Your posts is short! It really is!

lol mike shes just messing with you.
RylanWearingABowtie July 25, 2013, 6:11 PM EST.
finally someone had the guts to say the truth, and you managed to make an unattackable comment, too.
because, @all_the_wannabe-commander_zero-attackers: notice he used the words “mostly” and “more likely”, so yeah, he’s unattackable since he’s just right and didn’t use any generalization.
don’t worry, the formspring is open to any question (for what I understood) and it’s up to Taeshi wether to reply or not. I’m not trying to drag her into the discussion.
boh... July 25, 2013, 6:18 PM EST.
Smegirl is more entertaining than this comic strip itself.
contradictions and exaggerations makes it impossible to take already ****** arguments seriously.
Nax July 25, 2013, 6:18 PM EST.
I do kinda agree with Smegirl on something guys - the way Lucy’s abuse has changed in context because the tone of the comic has changed. It’s kinda shifted from being funny to being a full on drama with occasional fun. I also do agree that Mike wasn’t being sincere with enjoying the punches.
What I don’t agree with is Smegirl getting so worked up. This comic is for fun, please don’t get upset.
Ramona July 25, 2013, 6:27 PM EST.
I’m hardly worried. And I don’t think she’ll answer. She rarely does when it has anything to do with important plot details, and I do believe Mike feelings towards Lucy will play important role in the future. Be that friendship, or love.
Commander_Zero July 25, 2013, 6:29 PM EST.
Also I don’t think Smegirl was attacking anyone @Boh
Ramona July 25, 2013, 6:32 PM EST.
mmh, you’re right, but it’s worth trying… I always used it as a valid point to say that mike didn’t dislike the hits, and a reply from Taeshi would be very useful for this cause.
are you talking about my comment directed at commander_zero? in the second part I wasn’t talking only to him* but to the probably-a-lot of people that usually attack anyone who says “there are differences between males and females”.
boh... July 25, 2013, 6:34 PM EST.
@commander Zero - you speak English very well - it’s not my first language either and you’re and your confused me for a while too. I hope that helps to remember what the words stand for.
I’m not trying to attack anyone, I just dislike how commenters view violence against Mike as funny when it’s considered serious against anyone else. I have watched Tom and Jerry - but Tom and jerry is purely comedy, it’s not a drama comic with developing characters and themes.
I know what I said about Violence is true because one of my best friends ended up being severely hurt by his partner. We tried to get him to leave her, but he loved her and would always make excuses for her behaviour. It was only after she put him in hospital he tried to leave her and even then he went back in the end.
It jut worries me seeing how people think its okay. I’m not trying to attack anyone, and I’m not looking to fight. I just don’t think the way these characters are treating Mike is right. And I don’t think the thing about telling the truth when drunk is right either - there’s a reason consent isn’t legal if the person is drunk for sex.
PS I’m not a she. I’m a he, my name is a nickname
Smegirl July 25, 2013, 6:35 PM EST.
Please don’t bother Taeshi about this. I think I just won’t comment here anymore. I don’t want my comments to be seen as attacks.
Smegirl July 25, 2013, 6:36 PM EST.
Of course, everyone is a dude on the internet. Anyway you need to understand one thing: said abuse was depicted as comedic. The fact that Taeshi decided to turn it into serious business is acceptable, but she really shoud rewrite the comic, since previous events are in mess now.
As Boh… pointed out: right now all we have is Mike being beat up in two flashbacks. We don’t know if he was abused on daily basis. To be honest we don’t know much about how bad the situation was. That’s why taking Mike own words into account seems most reasonable. And Mike isn’t a person that defends Lucy all the time. He complained, he ranted, and then he scolded her violently. But he wasn’t angry about violence. He was angry that she used him. That she only needed someone to be her emotional support.
Situation shown in december was rather clear. Mike yelled at lucy, she puked, and now she’s being taken away to the funny house. We still don’t have full info on that, but it’s far more clear situation than whole Mike being abused business.
Commander_Zero July 25, 2013, 6:43 PM EST.
I can’t remember what I was gonna put, my brains kinda just gave up haha
But what I think is
1 - abuse is abuse and is wrong regardless of size, gender, etc
2 - The comic has changed tone, it’s more serious now
3 - commenters need to chill
Ramona July 25, 2013, 6:47 PM EST.
it’s true that sometimes people tell the truth when drunk, though. the alcohol weakens our inhibitions (I don’t know the right term) and we just say whatever comes to our mind.
also if Taeshi put that scene in the comic, it must mean something, don’t you think?
I’m not saying abuse is not wrong, I would be stupid to say that. I’m saying that mike was not seriously (with two different meanings) abused. he actually didn’t say anything about the physical violence when ranting at lucy in december.
for the “now the comic is serious” part: read my third comment, second to last part.

@boh @Comander-Zero @Ramona @Smegirl: Taeshi has already answered multiple questions about Mike and Lucy so you really don’t need to bother her for this. Also, no one here is saying that violence is okay. Abuse of any kind is generally not cool in real life(apparently some people are not okay with it in a comic about cartoon cat’s either ).
“You assume that only one of them is at fault.”
“… Hitting is really not a good thing to do at all whichever way you slice it.”
“Basically both are ******.”
“Being young and emotionally immature, he’s unsure of how to react to a complex situation.”
“He was still mistrusting of her, but he wanted to at least talk about it and see if it was worth continuing.”
Here’s my opinion on Mike and Lucy: You can try blaming one or the other, but just know that they are teenagers and they each made mistakes just like any other teenager would. People can keep on hating them or we could try coming up with a possible solution/future path to make the future better or just enjoy this wonderful comic. It’s your choice.
supertails19 July 25, 2013, 7:26 PM EST.
@Smegirl (regarding the response to me):
No, but in real life getting strangled to the poitn where you can’t breath doesn’t make your head grow comically big or end with you just having dizzy-eyes. You need to learn to see the difference between real life and comic logic.
You’re applying real life logic to a situation in a comic that’s obviously implied to be taken in a cartoony way, much like how some of the Ask Roseville High pics have things that would hurt and be uncalled for in real life but are played for cartoony violence-style laughs here. You need to learn to differentiate when its appropriate to use real life logic and when is appropriate not to; in this case, it’s VERY obvious that it was designed to be a cartoony situation because Mike was not hurt from it AT ALL.

Watchu talkin’ ‘bout Tess
She never picked out a scarf for him, she just lent him one because he was cold and then said she could keep it! She is such a troll hah!

Sambo July 25, 2013, 7:35 PM EST.
Tess’ face in the second last frame is so funny yet intimidating. She’s like “I’m going to punch you so hard—-“
Christen July 25, 2013, 7:35 PM EST.
I agree with Dieser’s recent point. We all need to learn to tell the difference between serious and comical. Taeshi told us that this chapter was going to be more lighthearted and yet there are people that are still taking everything very seriously(I think I might be one of them).
@Smegirl: Sorry if it seemed like I was trying to attack you earlier. I was just voicing my opinion in the best way that I could. I didn’t mean to hurt anyone’s feelings.
supertails19 July 25, 2013, 7:41 PM EST.
You read all that @Taeshi ? How about you put in some “boy abuses girl” in comedy like way to lighten up the atmosphere around these boys so they stop being so serious with the whole “girl abuses boy” issue?
Dk3 July 25, 2013, 7:45 PM EST.
@Dk3: We already have Augustus nearly raping Daisy, Tess being cornered continuously from the other students that hate her, we saw molly getting teased/bullied by a boy when she was younger, Abbey’s mom was a victim in an abusive relationship that did not end well for anyone involved, there is the speech Mike gave Lucy back in December, and Paulo yelling at Daisy twice… do you need any more examples of “boy abuses girl” or is this enough?
They are widely varied… some unintentional and others intentional. Some did major emotional damage, physical damage, or both to varying degrees of intensity.
Obviously none of these were okay situations, but I would rather see something like Paulo yelling at Daisy and then apologizing later on than go through what happened to Abbey’s mom again. That’s what I meant by varying intensity.
supertails19 July 25, 2013, 8:25 PM EST.
@supertails19 Forgive me for doubting your logic but Augustus wasn’t going to rape Daisy. He was just tring to shield her from a plot of revenge set up by Alejandro

JustSomeCritic July 25, 2013, 8:33 PM EST.
Huh, looks like a battle has been going on in the comments section.
Usually my common sense says “stay out of it”, but then there’s the other side that says “wade into it” and I often do—CUZ I AM CRAY!
Anyways, enough about me.
First of all this is a comic…about talking bipedal cats! (WTF!?)
Did I mention that this was a comic and like, none of this is real or actually happened at all?
I did mention this was a comic, right?
Second, any feelings or ideas you get from reading this comic is purely a representation of yourself…not of these characters. Hell, for all we know Mike might actually be a closet masochist or maybe he doesn’t like it at all…we’ll never really know!
Third and most importantly, this comic started out using violence in a comical way, because you know this is kind of like a comic. However, the artist decided to flip the violence in a realistic, thus more dramatic and in turn more emotional way.
The key here: the violence or rough-housing if you want to call it that was first used as a comical expression. Bear this in mind when you start flying off your chair about stuff like abuse.
Another thing to bear in mind is when you bring up sensitive subjects like abuse, everyone will split hairs about it and no one will agree completely about it, because everyone will have their own little set of detailed ideas about it (like they do with everything, this includes ice cream flavors and if the moon is really made of cheese) and more than not they will stick with the sinking ship, so to speak.
Lastly and I agree with the comments before me, abuse is abuse. It doesn’t matter if it’s a girl abusing a guy, a guy abusing a girl, or a turtle abusing a seagull…that’s just the fluff. Fact is, abuse is abuse. Period.

Poor guy. In the past few comics he’s been punched by Paulo, strangled by Sue, and now teased by Tess. Mike’s going to be a mess soon.
aPersonWhoPosts July 25, 2013, 9:03 PM EST.
@supertails19 I ment in a comedy way, not dramatic way. You remember the old chapters where the likeable version of Mike even kept punishing yashi. Yashi didn’t get trauma from it and still loves Mike as flea/dad despite the “abuse”. That’s the type of comedy hitting that Lucy was doing to Mike that many readers go so serious about and claim it to be one sided in gender lately as I read above. I think for this comic its fitting comedy and shouldn’t be replaced with serious drama only. Its a cat and dog comic
Dk3 July 25, 2013, 9:10 PM EST.
Oh that is so mean! xD
TarriPup July 25, 2013, 9:22 PM EST.
@Rocky: It’s perfectly fine.
I’m okay with people breaking down what I say and finding holes in them. I also try to think about what could be said against me and try to prepare for it like when I added this line: “They are widely varied… some unintentional and others intentional.”
What you said was completely true. Augustus never intended to rape Daisy and he was just trying to protect her from becoming part of Alejandro’s plot just like you said. However, the methods he used such as manipulating her into becoming something that she’s not was more of what I was thinking about. He essentially set her up to fail and made sure he was there to be the one to hold her and make the tears go away. I kind of count that as a form of psychological abuse. Which is actually not cool, but was played off as being somewhat okay since he loves her and was just trying to protect her.
I’m not sure how I feel about Augustus… he’s offered advice that I think was pretty cool and helpful, but then he has the whole shady background with Alejandro as a boss. Hmm, he’s probably saved Lucy from doing something really stupid on several occasions which I think is awesome, but then again he does insult her repeatedly.
I think I digressed from the point of what I was saying. Oh, well. Nice job, being attentive, Rocky.

@Dk3: Well Kevin tried giving a little comedic bop to Janet, but Molly didn’t respond well to that. Kevin and Janet are Abbey and Molly’s foster parents.
Hmm, I wonder if you can count what David did to Daisy?
… probably not.
Huh, I can’t think of anything recent that seemed like boy on girl abuse with a comedic twist.
I can think of more cases where a girl hits another girl for comedic reasons than a boy hitting a girl for comedic reasons… well at least after Volume 1.

Oh comedy I missed you so. honestly as much as I like the drama the thing that got me hocked on BCB in the first place was the humor. I love comedy and that is why I stuck with BCB as long as I did. Take a chill pill, people.
@Smegirl, yes, abuse is a terrible, terrible thing, no matter who is abusing or being abused. But frankly, this is a (mostly) humorous web comic, and it helps no one when you get up in arms about comic humor.
@boh, yes, drunkenness leads to candidness (in general). You were right in many things you said. But (surprise) so was Smegirl.
Now honestly, this is not the place for campaigning a cause or squabbling like angry cats (pun unintended). Free speech is encouraged, of course, but can we avoid taking pot shots at each other, please?
I doubt anyone will read this, seeing as it’s buried in the comments, but I thought I might as well try to settle it. Although it looks like a few other folks have taken the neutral field in this as well. Thank goodness for common sense.
Fangskin July 26, 2013, 3:07 AM EST.
yes, taking the neutral field to “calm everybody” when there’s no need at all anymore. we were all more than calm like 10 hours ago even before we finished writing all that stuff.
also many things you guys wrote makes it seem to me like you didn’t read our comments carefully.
smegirl (he’s a male) was saying abuse is wrong and it’s ok. me, commander_zero and some others were only (“only” at least on my part, I can’t talk for others) trying to make him understand that all the “abuse” he was talking about were only beatings put for comic purposes. there’s no one here saying that abuse is not wrong, or saying smegirl was wrong in saying it. he was simply applying his rightful arguments to the wrong situation.
boh... July 26, 2013, 5:49 AM EST.
p.s. this is the kind of hits that always appeared in bcb before the characters really started developing:
