I mean… sort of right.

Paulo’s face at the end is a very appropriate expression considering.

Lowkey is David wrong tho 🤔

Zambies

Comment ID #117669

Kinda, definitely not the whole truth

Mike was never that needy of Lucy, not untill after she started weaponising her suicide attempt to guildtrip him

Just one example early on Mike was trying to catch a bus to find Sandy, Lucy saw him and followed him even after he explicitly told her to leave him alone

Calling Mike the needy one is delusional at best and manipulative at worst

Besides the point, but I really like the shapes of David’s legs on this page. Loving the fresh art direction for this chapter!

What do y’all think Paulo’s more put off by — what David said or how he said it?

PAM

Comment ID #117675

Hard to say. Paulo is use to what and how David says things.

Relathain

Comment ID #117676

I think this is classic Paulo/David interaction. Paulo is trying to figure out what David is trying to say because he’s so weird 😅 Paulo wants a straight answer and he won’t ever get that from David lol

Nev Ravenoak

Comment ID #117677

Wow, I’m amazed that the most accurate analysis of Mike’s behavior would come from David??? But also, thank god Paulo is being given a deeper look into the issues Mike is going through; he can’t help if Mike doesn’t admit his issues.

Also: I love the new art style!! <3

How is it accurate? Since when has Mike shown that he doesn’t care about Paulo and Daisy?

Alex Covey

Comment ID #117679

@ Alex He isn’t hovering around them anymore since the two started dating because they aren’t pining after him

Nev Ravenoak

Comment ID #117680

I don’t think it’saccurate at all, it is accurate to what Lucy believes of Mike but not what actually happened.

Mike was never needy for Lucy. He approached her when she couldn’t make any friends and felt responsible for her. He barrely tolerated her untill her behaviour turned in abuse. There are times where he literally tells her to not follow him and she does anyway. How is he the needy one?

Mike leading Lucy on is a story fabricated unconciously by Lucy so she could have someone to blame other then herself for how low she had gotten and Mike has been too guildtripped and gaslighted to deny it anymore

Kiall Vun Myeret

Comment ID #117681

no, Mike’s definitely needy. he’s constantly shown negative reaction to people getting over him (or just trying to) and has been looking for ways to compensate for how he’s no longer fulfilled by his relationship with Sandy.

what is definitely wrong is that he hasn’t stopped caring about people. despite having conflicting feelings about Paulo and Daisy getting together, he did not up and abandon them over it. Mike did develop an unhealthy obsession with James, and he was starting to shut others out in favour of him… but that started when James kissed him, before he pre-emptively rejected Paulo. there was a change in his routine, and nobody changed to compensate because, hey, it looked like he was fine! it wasn’t, but nobody ever communicates their problems here until they have a mental breakdown over it

SomeColourMage

Comment ID #117682

I think a large part of the issue between Lucy and Mike is that while he did put up with a lot of abuse from Lucy, he never felt like it was bad enough that he needed to cut her off. I believe it’s because he also enjoyed how obsessed Lucy was with him, and he could use Lucy as reassurance that he’s a good person for being nice to her.

Then, when Sandy pointed out that Lucy was being abusive to him, he didn’t say anything until finally blowing up and laying it all out in the worst possible way. I imagine he was conflicted internally, but a simple conversation where he told Lucy how she was hurting him would have made a big difference to how things turned out.

Elizabeth Hunter

Comment ID #117683

if we can take Another Flame as any indication, it wasn’t even pointing out the abuse, but Sandy insinuating that the only reason he’d put up with it is if he has feelings for her

which was pretty accurate

SomeColourMage

Comment ID #117684

Also true; it’s exactly what Daisy said in the library a few chapters ago: Mike needs to learn to stand up for himself BEFORE it gets so bad that he explodes; he has a very hard time standing up to people he cares about because he’s afraid it’ll be too much and they’ll abandon him.

Maybe tied into how his mom treats him? She constantly praises him for being ‘perfect’ and ‘never difficult’, so maybe he’s learned to never speak up for himself for fear of being an ‘inconvenience’?

Elizabeth Hunter

Comment ID #117685

I would definitely consider that a strong possibility. not only did it teach him the wrong way to deal with conflict, with his parents’ relationship currently strained that’s one less avenue of help even if he could tame his flaws long enough to seek it

SomeColourMage

Comment ID #117686

If victims of abuse could cut their abuser of so easily there would be a whole lot less abuse happening.

Whenever Lucy’s abuse came up before Sandy noticed it the common response was “That’s just how Lucy is”

How do you expect someone to suddenly stand up for themself if everyone arounds you thinks it’s fine and you’ve known nothing else

Also Mike having a calm convertation wouldn’t have changed a thing. Lucy was told why Mike hated her and all she did with that information was sulk about it or try to force their friendship anyway. She has not once apologised for it

Kiall Vun Myeret

Comment ID #117687

Oh, absolutely! All of the outside contributing factors are the reasons why Mike was never sure of himself enough to speak up!

At first he was just saying “that’s who she is” as a way of apologizing for her to other people, when he really should have been calling her out. He’s just constantly “too nice” as a reaction to a lot of influences, and thinks that setting boundaries and correcting someone’s bad behavior will make them leave you (mostly because I don’t think he has any close examples of another way to be…)

There was no other way this could have gone, but I think if someone like Sue (or even Jess) had been the one to point out how abusive Lucy was being, it would have gone much better. Sue would have emphasized Lucy’s good qualities while still laying out that her treatment of Mike is unacceptable, and he would have been in a better headspace to confront Lucy in December.

I’m sure Vero and Oliver have the story already laid out, but that’s just my two cents!

He did kill him though, that did happen.

Yeah David and Paulo aren’t gonna be friends anymore I can feel it, David is omitting how he said everyone prefers Lucy over Mike and that he’s half responsible along with Augustus for Mike being all alone now.

AlienSpawn

Comment ID #117693

Be wild if that were the case. David and Paulo are like two peas in a pod, so their friendship ending would require some sort of nuclear level event for that to be possible. We will just have to see how things play out though.

Relathain

Comment ID #117694

Would be interesting to see, finally give David some character development instead of being some sidekick clown archetype.

AlienSpawn

Comment ID #117695

think it just kinda needs to happen. want a bigger role in the plot, David? well better take a heaping helping of damaged friendships and trauma because that’s most of what goes on here!

SomeColourMage

Comment ID #117696

Seeing this sort of sudden group “realization” about Mike’s needy behavior from Augustus, David, James, and it feels very final season. It’s not like Lucy didn’t say it often but that she came off the same way (Paulo is the main example, plus her clinging *back* to Mike), so this is new from others. Is it accurate? I think it’s complicated! Is this the explanation the narrative resolves on? Maybe, but that would be reducing Mike down to one explanation imo; he is built of contradictions and that’s what makes him so interesting as a character.

Hazel

Comment ID #117697

Agreed! I’m hoping Paulo and Daisy act as the bridge between Mike and the rest of the group. Augustus, David, James, and Lucy all have their reasons for viewing Mike in a mostly negative light at this point. But Paulo (and Daisy, to a lesser extent) have seen more of Mike’s struggles so they’re able to better sympathize with him

Ah, I would guess this is playing into the “Mike spiraling” arc - his friends might end up misinterpreting this as Mike engaging in his signature behavior of being weird around people who have moved on after crushing on him… Not realizing that he’s withdrawing this time because of depression instead.

Kind of giving a narrative reason for his friends, who do care about him, to not be as aware of his mental health decline.

Yessss, David, good read! I don’t think this is a bad take, just a very simplified one, haha, but very David. I’d be so quietly mad at Mike for trying to take my cute spunky cat boy from me when all he wanted James for was to keep him pining after him. :Y Mike you always get all the attention stop being a baby jeez (EDIT: still love u mike hope u grow and get better you beautiful mess)

Also I am absolutely in love with the new colors/style hoo boy I’d frame that it’s so pretty

Comacoma

Comment ID #117706

A pretty accurate summation all things considered. He even did Mike a favor by leaving out the part where Mike threw a tantrum, screamed at Lucy, & assaulted Augustus 👍

Machias

Comment ID #117707

You mean where Augustus pushed and pushed untill Mike snapped.

That’s called reactive abuse.

Where the abuser keeps pushing the victim to try to get an outburst so they can dehumanise them and point out to the world how bad the victim is and how right the abuser is.

Augustus is a master at thid. He did the same thing to Abbey too when he brought up his father

Mike was the victim in that scenario

Kiall Vun Myeret

Comment ID #117708

I mean it’s technical not wrong, Mike is a ghost right now after getting murdered by 4 people. My question is that why did Paulo go to David for a straight, unbiased answer?

Btw I am loving the new style! It’s gives a emotional vibe.

Tyzel

Comment ID #117709

well, who else can he ask?

- Lucy will invoke the “promise”

- James has made it pretty clear he’s not going to give a straight answer

- Augustus would be stupid to answer, Paulo still hates him and that will make it worse

- he’s already tried talking to Mike and that didn’t help at all

SomeColourMage

Comment ID #117710

Mm…fair point. This is the last resort in a sense.

Tyzel

Comment ID #117711

The new style reminds me of the earlier Volume 2 colouring and its so pleasing to the eye 😩😩

Candyboi6576

He’s not technically wrong but he’s leaving out a LOT. God, did he never really like Mike?

Steven Pope

Comment ID #117713

The new style is looking good, not sure about teal David though.

Russell Nils

Comment ID #117714

Pretty sure that David doesnt know that Mike craved death earlier and thinks that Mike is going to try to kill himself… EVERYBODY knows that Mike seriously does not understand how friendships work and thinks that he cannot be an inconvenience or people will leave him.
