Everyone has felt that way before it seems. Abbey really is a good and true person. Passion is something that takes time to be tamed. He is probably the most dynamic and interesting characters you have. He really fees real and the phrasing you use with the way he talks really feels real. Currently the most tragic, and my favorite, character that you have.

Man, it must be pretty darn difficult for Abbey. He probably thought he would be more or less okay with seeing his mom, but as she draws ever closer, so does his guilt. The closer he gets to potentially tying up loose ends, the more guilt he feels about the entirety of the situation, especially because of what his father said. People keep telling him to get over it, but come on, it’s difficult to get over something that has been tormenting you for a good chunk of your life just like that.

Again, Abbey, you need to realize that you’re getting better than you used to be. I know it’s hard to move on from past problems with yourself, but fixing those flaws take time. Janet is right, and the fact that you notice this problem already goes to show that you are a far better man than your father simply by knowing it’s wrong. Just hang in there, it may be a difficult task, but I believe you have the strength to commit to fixing these flaws. So stop being so hard on yourself about it. You will become a far greater man than your father EVER was.

Too bad he can’t hear me…. :(

As much as I hate to use this quote, mainly because of where it came from, knowing is indeed half the battle. One cannot truly be dynamic without knowing what needs to change. One needs to see one’s faults if one is to truly change. Abbey is learning, but he needs to see forward as well as back, as hindsight is always 20/20.

Renadt March 30, 2012, 12:49 AM EST.

Comment ID #213030

Awww. Abbey’s main problem is he likes to blame himself. Usually when he finds a problem (something like the bullying situation in the flashback) he most certainly is in the right, he just has a tendency to “get passionate” and take it too far, which likely stems from his abusive father.

It’s really good that he’s getting help and he’s willing to admit that he does have issues that he needs to work out. It’s probably something his father never did :)

Also, I really like hoodie Abbey. Not sure why, seeing as ANGST ANGST ANGST ANGST ANGST.

Oi, as much as I love the story… It feels so unnecessarily dragged out sometimes.

Mew March 30, 2012, 1:03 AM EST.

Comment ID #213034

I understand what Abby is going through.
To stop being angry for “no reason” you first need to identify what, exactly, you’re angry about. Noone, unless they’re emotionally unstable, just gets mad for “no reason”. It may be something insignificant and childish. You may not even realize that it’s what made you angry. But anger always has a trigger.
And once you get through your anger, there’s the balancing act of deciding when it’s ok to be angry. Sometimes you’re undeniably in the right. In cases such as those, it’s ok the be assertive and angry, sometimes. however, it’s impossible to know. No matter how in the right you were, in how yin thought or in reality, you will always think that you were too mean. That you did something wrong.
Abby just needs to stop trying. If he gets mad, fine. Get mad. We all have our own feelings, and people will respect you for expressing them honestly, no matter how nasty it may sound. The only reason Abby would have to try and rein in his anger is if, whenever he got angry, he wanted to hurt someone. Not hurt at in “ooow, you kick me!”, hurt as in broken arm hurt. That’s when you need a psychiatrist, medicine, or both. And Abby just isn’t that kind of kid. Angry violent jerkass isn’t a gene, it’s a mental state, which Abby clearly isn’t in.
Also, abby, along with all the other characters, looks positively dapper in clothing.

Curtisimo March 30, 2012, 1:09 AM EST.

Awww, Abbey probably never confides in anyone and keeps all the emotions bottled up. ._. I’m glad Abbey has a supportive family and friends :]

I really like Abbey and Molly’s brother and sister relationship. :] It kind of seems like they keep each other in check/balanced… It kindof like my brother and me. He usually gets me to think about stuff or tells me if I do something wrong… And I used to be kind of violent too. >.> I guess most people who are bullied/abused become abusive themselves. ._.

And if Molly’s late all the time, is that dude bothering her all the time? It’s nice she’s being strong and independent, but I wonder if she’s really getting help…

aaah, so she woke up abbey with the radio and her voice! I didn’t understand that he was sleeping.
I hope daisy is sleeping too, huddled up behind one of the two seats.

… but I think we should have been able to see her in these panels, anyway.

edit: just noticed Taeshi’s comment for the previous page:

Janet is rockin beats right now while everyone else sleeps

was it there from the beginning? I usually read her comment soon after reading the comic…

I’ve been where he is.
My father was also a very violent man and it was years later, when I grew up a bit more, before I learnt about his actions in detail.
But I always feared I’d become him, I used to get angry for no reason, I worried that I couldn’t become somebody better than him. Everything Abbey is saying and going through… I can connect with entirely.

It takes a while to get control of it, I still struggle at times. But yes! if you can see your own faults, you are already half way to winning the battle :)

Abbey’s gonna be okay. And he’ll grow up to a great person too~
His heart’s in the right place.

LOVE this story arc by the way :D

I feel you, Abbey. Though it was never to the extreme you and other people have experienced, I grew up in an emotionally abusive household. I didn’t realize it until a few years ago; I thought everyone’s house was like that. My dad had physical tendencies, but he aware enough of them to stop himself from hurting us (most of the time). Usually he would break things to take out his anger - a can opener, a printer, a window - but I grew up seeing that explosive rage and I adopted it myself. I get really angry and until I started teaching I didn’t realize how desperately I needed to get control of it. I learned to rein in my anger and control my actions, but I still feel it, and I know from other people’s expressions that they see the crazy gleam in my eyes and the flush in my face when I’m trying to control my anger. Many times I force myself to walk away and either write until I no longer feel angry, exercise, or work on something that requires a ton of energy.

To sum up, Abbey, you might or might not be able to control how angry you get, but you can absolutely control your reactions. It takes time, and you’re still very young.

Am I the only one who doesn’t think Abbi has a problem? He’s got a lot to be angry about, and that incident with the bully was totally justified. He wouldn’t listen when asked nicely, so he had to speak the bully’s own language. Not a lot of force, just enough to get him to give back the ribbon. The problem is that today everyone is sure that pacifism is the answer to everything. Getting angry, and even occasionally using force, does NOT make Abbi the same as his father.

Being aware of your faults is very different from undue self blame. The hard part is keeping one from blaming his or her self for what wasn’t one’s fault. The learning of the proper balance is just another piece of maturity. Not giving up helps and there we are.
