*A rooster stands on a rooftop.*
Rooster: Ki kiri kiriiiiiiii~!

*David is in his bedroom, snoring in bed.*

*The rooster peeks in through the window.*
Rooster: I said--
*David sits up, startled awake.*
David: WHOA!!

*David blinks and stares off into empty space.*
David: … Eh?

*David snaps to attention.*
David: Hey, wait.

*David jumps out of the covers and onto the bed, grinning.*
David: Today’s my BIRTHDAY!!

*David gleefully rushes down the stairs.*
David: WHOO!!

*David, with his tail wagging and a focused look on his face, pan-fries some eggs still in their shell. Behind him, a silhouette of his mom passes by in the hallway.*
David: Lessee, what kind of breakfast in bed should I make myself..
David’s mom: …!

*David’s mom, still in silhouette, turns to David, who grins at her.*
David’s mom: Ahh.. you’re up early, Davie!
David: ♥ Good morning, Mommy! ♥

David’s mom: Be sure to get to school on time! I love you, bye! ♥
*David’s mom walks away, waving a hand goodbye. David freezes in shock, his expression turning to dread. The eggs explode in the pan.*
David: WHA-AT?!

*David chases after his mom with tears in his eyes.*
David: But Mommy, it’s my birthday!
*David’s mom continues to walk away.*
David’s mom: And I’ll make you a BIG dinner tonight! Be good, I love you~! ♥

*David points to himself, looking defiant.*
David: HEY, I am a big boy now, and I deserve a day off today, y’hear?

*The door clicks closed in front of David as he smiles expectantly.*

*David continues to smile at the closed door.*
David: …

[Caption: And so]
*David lumbers towards school, pouting.*
David: …

*David looks up at the school’s clock.*
David: …

*He stands, staring up at it with a serious face.*
David: Hmm..

*Lucy appears behind him.*
Lucy: Stop being such a baby and skip school already.
*David jumps back, shocked.*
David: GACK!

Author commentary

Veronica: “Kikiri kikiii” is actually meant to be the spanish version of when a rooster does the “cockle-doodle-doo”.. but I always thought the Spanish version was better hence why I used it.

Wow, a birthday chapter that is.. full length? What an honour! David might as well be the main character of BCB, huh? Even Lucy only got a measly three pages!

Oliver: This page is a memorable one to me for a secret reason — it’s the sample page Veronica and I worked on when testing out production methods for the remaking of these chapters. It had a lot of background variety, it had captions, it had digital and hand-drawn text… it was perfect! So I salute you, page 1 of Onwards to Adventure. You walked so the Omnibus could run.
