I agree! Like i understand that lucy doesn’t want to be around mike but it doesn’t seem like he is encroaching her space on purpose. I feel like it would just be easier for lucy and auggy to find a different spot.

That’s why I brought up dramatic irony on the last page. It’s really becoming more and more prevalent in the story, where there’s a serious disconnect between the audience’s knowledge and the characters. Vero does it so well~

I love Augustus. Given the amount of information he’s working with, and that he’s seen how affected Lucy has been and still is by Mike’s actions, he’s doing what little he can to be a good friend. He wants to try and help her from falling back into a dark place despite her not opening up to him: trying to reduce her triggers (and given they share classes, that’s probably the only time she has during the school day where she’s not listening to a teacher and/or with him near her, and the reason she exiled herself in the first place was to have space from him)

Yeah I feel like people are forgetting that it’s only been a few weeks since Mike was egregiously shitty to Lucy in Eternal Flame. Like SO bad. Forcing her (physically!) to have to stay so he could trauma-dump about Sandy to her, deliberately taking advantage of the affection Lucy has for him, and then straight up blowing her off the next day because he was so hyper focused on Sandy. Again. Lunch is the only part of the day they’re not forced into each other’s proximity. Like have some decency to recognize that maybe you can concede to her this small concession given how shitty you were to her, ENTIRELY unprompted by her, and entirely of your own volition?

Right? Mike’s favorite people seem to be the ones who pine for him. I know it isn’t his fault people fall for him but— seriously. He HAS friends that aren’t unrequited crushes. But he seems only hyperfocused on chasing those friendships.

Right? He could literally even just ASK David and James if they can hang somewhere else but he’s immediately acting as though the only option is isolating himself and that’s what’s being demanded of him and it’s really not. It’s just ‘give the girl you mistreated recently a little more space’ but you’d think Augustus is telling him to go die from the responses. Mike DOES have a lot of friends, that’s literally true, whether or not he feels like he doesn’t right now because some of them moved on from him romantically instead of pining forever.

I find it strange, these comments down below are missing a very vital piece of all of this. How long does someone have to hold on to something before they must make the decision to heal? Are the decisions based off others the reason why you make a decision. Or, should someone change their life for somebody else? Since when do you become a source of happiness when you can’t even be happy yourself.
We can continue to use the past relationship between Mike and Lucy as a reason for his position and Lucy’s position the same. But what’s going to happen is the same thing. Lucy, even though she has her unlike when it comes to Mike, I don’t believe she hates him. I really don’t. Don’t get me wrong, we all have been hurt by someone, but we also don’t hate them. Mike, he’s a man of regrets, rather a boy of regrets. And they are all children, young and not really ready to face the weight of what they have placed upon each other and themselves.
Mike does need to develop a backbone, but at the same time he is always thinking about somebody else. Always thinking about how his life had turned out in the relationships that he’s in. And that echoed from how he was before with Lucy. I cannot blame him for becoming jaded for being who he was what he had to do at such a young age.
He has trauma just like Lucy…
I believe it is far better for him and Lucy to learn to amend what had been broken or, to let what did go. Because if you’re not happy now because of something in the past that is something they as individuals can choose to heal on their own.

I think you might be forgetting that even though irl it’s been a long time since eternal flame, in the timeline of the story it’s only been a few weeks. And that was a pretty terrible thing to do to someone. I think wanting to avoid him after that, this recently, is totally understandable

Yes of course, avoiding them in that way is a good idea however, he also has to live his own life. He’s in track he has friends he has gatherings he has things he wants to do or even needs to do.
And I do understand the want to want to protect someone too. But, it’s not like you can leave the classroom. It’s not like he will be able to avoid her every time they go down a hallway.
I haven’t forgotten anything. I understand it has been a few weeks.
However, there are lines that shouldn’t be crossed despite how we feel.

Might I also point out that as Lucy has stated earlier, we’ve seen what it looks like when Mike was actually actively avoiding Lucy and trying not to be around her and this ain’t it. He Eternal Flamed her just like a couple weeks ago! He could ASK his friends if they can hang somewhere else if he weren’t so guilty and terrified of people asking why.
