First-Degree Burn — Page 14

Author commentary

Veronica: Mike and David seem to have this mutual “I don’t give a shit about you" shtick going on, it’s all about James’ interests here, baby.

Well, David doesn’t necessarily care about James, either. He’s enjoying the attention, but most of all he enjoys running!

.. I guess because it gets him attention. Attention sure is nice!

Cock block averted, David and James get their alone time, all is well in the world.

Oh, and Mike is there too, Poor guy. Hopefully he can have an enjoyable lunch with his other friends…

It is a little harder for me to feel bad for him after going back to reread previous chapters. Im really curious what is going on with sandy though, i find it strange we haven’t seen them texting in a while.

I think despite him taking Sandy back, their relationship is still likely fatally wounded, and Mike probably knows it on some level.

Edit: And despite probably knowing it should be over, he likely feels he has given up too much just to end their relationship.

Considering he was near perpetually on his phone in the past compared to now, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s the one rarely texting back now. I doubt he’d ghost her entirely like she did to him, but yeah, he’s likely not putting anywhere near as much effort into it anymore. Which, while bad for their relationship, is probably healthier for Mike. Or at least, it would be, were it not for this omnipresent sense of everyone he knows and cares about drifting away from him.

it’s okay Mike, I’m sure one day someone in your group will figure out how to say something directly

Like I said, Mike is finally feeling how Lucy felt. He is feeling the heat of what she went through/is going through. I know a lot of people are taking up for Mike right now as readers and while I also feel bad for him- I also don’t in some ways. He did this to Lucy originally and he is now seeing how that feels like. It’s a result of his actions. I do hope one day they can make amends but right now Mike is learning some tough to swallow life lessons.

Yeah. Definitely something he likely needed to experience to really understand what Lucy went through. Unfortunately, we know where it led Lucy, and important as the lesson is for Mike to internalize, the end result isn’t something I would wish on anyone, even Mike.

I think alot of people have forgotten about the chapter 110 eternal flame. Mike essentially pushed himself onto lucy and used her as a rebound. He built her up only to knock her down all over again while she was actively trying to heal from what he had done previously.

Brittany ann

Comment ID #29701

I’m sorry, are you all forgetting that Mike had a damn good reason to do what he did to Lucy.

Lucy never had people treatening her from staying away from her friends, she pushed them away herself

Mike isn’t suffering from his actions, he is still suffering from Lucy’s

Reply to Kiall,

I understand that you are incredibly biased towards Mike and against Lucy, but you can’t blame every single little thing on her. Mike has his faults, too, and his mistakes are coming to bite him right now. It’s not all on Lucy. That’s a pretty black and white view on things. Neither of them is perfect, or innocent, not even Mike.

I get some of your statements, but then the others are pretty wild. Lucy is a child who tried to end herself partly because of Mike, and to say that she deserved that/Mike’s behavior was entirely justifiable is.. something.

I kind of had David pegged out as Asexual and still kind of do. Mike you have other friends, why won’t you sit at the table? Did something happen with the rest of the group or what’s going on?

I think he still feels guilty about how he treated them when he was having problems with sandy. Im pretty sure everyone has forgiven him but im not sure he see it that way.

You’re probably right, he’s on terms with Daisy and Paulo which got the worst of it so let’s hope he sees reason and makes things right with the others.

Mike if you were seeing James as your ‘last ticket out’ of your bad relationship left, you really have to get it together. Trying to keep him from moving onto someone else after turning him down isn’t gonna help either of you…

David is best boy 🤷🏻‍♀️ Mike only liked James because he was (previously) so amazed and inspired by Mike’s running abilities

Do you guys think Mike actually is going to attempt suicide later on in the story? Since he’s been going down the same path Lucy did with no true equivalent to Augustus to help him out.

starblandd

Comment ID #29710

Most likely. I think that will be the incident that causes Mike and Lucy to finally reconnect one again as they both can relate to what it feels like to be at your absolute lowest with no light in sight. I imagine a Mike suicide attempt where he realises how badly he’s burnt so many bridges throughout the story will be the pentiultimate arc and a final confrontation with Alejandro will be the final arc in the story.

I hope not. Not every teen needs to go for the suicide road, at this point it will be overused. There’s being deep in depression and also self harming….,so no need to go with the suicide again.

The Chosen Revolutionary

Mike, This is the point where you need to turn this fruatration and helplessness into anger, go to the trackfield with David and James and tell Augustus in his face that you can go wherever you damn well please.

And if Lucy has a problem with that then she should have thought about that before she abused you for years. You need to realise it’s not your fault that she couldn’t live with herself after realising what a horrible person she was

Kiall Vun Myeret

Comment ID #29716

Lucy didnt ask for this, Augustus did, and thats a fucked up thing to say about a child who tried to kill themself, even fictional. 🤷

theoktony

Comment ID #29717

And it was Lucy’s narcicistic way of thinking that she was somehow the victim of Mike standing up to her abuse that spurred Augustus to do it.

It’s also a fucked up thing to say that Mike, a victim of abuse and also a child btw in any way deserves what’s happening to him right now but here we are.

Kiall Vun Myeret

Kiall - what is your interpretation of last chapter (Second String) and what’s causing Mike to be so unhappy lately? Ignore this current chapter, Mike has obviously been feeling wretched well before this one and hardly anyone is condoning Augustus’s behavior. What are Mike’s current problems and how did they come about in your opinion?

AlisterTX

I think you’ve misunderstood why Lucy is upset, Mike screwed her over, read Eternal Flame

Peligrin

Comment ID #29720

I think that chapter mostly points to what Mike told Paulo in the new year chapter

How people only seem to be able to see him in a romantic way and never as anything else.

James went from being all over Mike to saying he wasn’t needed anymore pretty much the moment Mike rejected his offer.

He put his trust in James that they could be friends only for James to be another person that didn’t really care for Mike as a person, only for a potential partner

The episode also hinted at their being family troubles, the one person he trusted more then anyone else cheated on him ,

The false guild Lucy unfairly dropped on him causing his selfesteem to plummit…

It isn’t really surprising he isn’t doing well right now

Kiall Vun Myeret

Comment ID #29721

I did read “Eternal Flame”. And if that chapter existed in a vaccuum i would have been on Lucy’s side. It doesn’t though

Setting aside how suspicious it is that Lucy’s behaviour towards Mike changes on a dime depending on if Sandy is an obstacle or not and that the “What-If” chapter revealed that it was Lucy that kissed Mike

That Lucy thinks Mike as this big monster cause he chose Sandy over her while she had a past of abusing him for years is a big sign of narcacistic behaviour. For her she is always the victim and how she hurts others is mostly an aftertought

Mike’s unhealthy obsession with Lucy also has a name

Stockholm syndrome

The reason why so many abuse victims have trouble leaving their abuser and often think they are to blame. I could write an entire essay over this but pretty much all of Mike’s bad behaviours can be linked to Lucy’s abuse of him

I feel that people really need to put in perspective that if these children did what they did as adults Mike at most would be a jerk

Lucy would have a prison sentence

My two cents on Lucy and Mike.

.

.

.

.

.

Both, Mike and Lucy had a play in how their relationship ended up. Lucy was an awful , physical bully to Mike. Isolated herself and tried to end her life because of “one boy” . Mike on the other hand didn’t tell Lucy that he didn’t like the treatment she was giving him. Abandoned and ignored Lucy for Sandy for over a year. Pretended Lucy was Sandy when he did hangout with her. Blew up at her. Said awful things…. That he needed to say though regretted it later. They both have issues. They both deserve better.

Lucy is the one who is mostly in her own way…. Isolating herself . Mike is in his own way too being a people pleaser. Mike doesn’t need to listen or do what August says. But he will because of his guilt. That is on him (Mike).

To me “Eternal flame” showed that Lucy and Mike are not ready to be friends. They had went back to their old ways. Lucy being someone Mike could dump on about Sandy. Lucy taking things in a romantic way after trying to leave.
