Transcript

*Mike stands in his bedroom, looking at the bonsai tree sitting on his desk, forlorn.*

*Mike leans his elbow on the desk, resting his head on his hand. He looks thoughtfully at the tree.*
Mike: (sigh) Next time I’ll be there to thank her.. I hope.

*Mike notices the curtain swaying in the wind. He glumly walks toward the window with his arm outstretched.*
Mike: Sure is breezy tonight.

*Mike’s eyes widen as he notices a shadow outside the window.*
Mike: I-is that..?

*Mike hesitates, nervous.*
Mike: Is that moving..? Is somebody out there?

*Mike imagines leaning out the window towards the shadow, which resembles Sandy’s silhouette sitting in a tree.*
Mike (thinking): It couldn’t be..

*Mike looks up dreamily.*
Mike (thinking): It’s true! She must have.. It’s finally.. her!

*Mike pulls his curtain back, peering out the window with a wistful expression.*
Mike: Sandy..?

*Mike sees his scarf tangled in the branches of a tree outside his window, blowing in the wind.*

*Mike looks disappointed.*
Mike: …

*Mike reaches out and grabs his scarf, pulling it inside.*

*He looks down sadly at the scarf.*
Mike: Oh, I forgot about you.

*Mike carelessly throws the scarf on the desk, frowning.*
Mike: So ridiculous.

*Mike gets into bed and pulls the blanket over him, looking upset. He rolls around.*
Mike: Nnghh..

*Small figurines of Mike and Sandy sit together smiling beneath the bonsai tree.*
Mike: Goodnight, Sandy.
END

Author commentary

Veronica: How nice of that wind to blow the scarf all the way to the tree right next to Mike’s place! Imagine if it got blown to, like, a garbage bin. Mike would have had to go shopping again!

And that’s the end of that chapter! Tune in for high school, coming right up!

When you are in love, you don’t see other things around you. Sure, Mike ignored Lucy for all those years, but what did she expect? Things just happen. Mike wanted to devote his time and energy to the girl he truly loved. Simple as that.

Still…poor Lucy…

I just feel more sympathetic for Mike and Sandy, that’s all.

OOOOOOOH Second read-through and now I get the symbolism with his Scarf.. I guess it being a second read-through, and realizing why he got the scarf (and its particular colour) I can see its symbolism haha, from him loosing it earlier in the chapter (but not chasing it) and now this…. Although its a little sad in a way… If people don’t realize the symbolism then I may edit this with what I think is the answer. (Just ask if you don’t get it. I’ll check this page again a few times just in case someone does)

EDITS - Simple spelling corrections. Its 11PM here in Melbourne (Aus) so I’m a little too tired to write it with proper grammar.
