Nothing says love like forever abandoning the ones you love, making them always have to wonder what happened to you, why you didn’t love them enough to reclaim them from foster care, what is wrong with them that would make you never want to see them again.

What a great mom.

Comment ID #213856

Titanium Dragon: Her kids are younger and therefore it would be better for them to be left wondering and have hope than for their lives to be crushed and know theyd never see her again. And gathering from what has happened in previous pages, I would say that something went wrong before of after the operation.

Curtisimo April 9, 2012, 12:15 AM EST.

Comment ID #213861

Kikren: So? Think about this. I’d be certainly sure I’d want to see my mother then to know she was about to die. Supposing there hopes are crushed when the find out she’s dead. At least they KNOW what happened to her instead of waiting years on end to hear at least a word about her.

Radish April 9, 2012, 12:15 AM EST.

Comment ID #213862

Radish: She wanted them to live a happy life with their foster parents. A new life. They had to recover from the recent trauma to live that new life and if her death was revealed then they would’ve had more and more trouble adjusting and being happy. In one of the previous pages where Abbey and Molly are standing by a window thinking Santa Clause would bring their mom back to them. That’s the kind of hope that children need to keep living happily. If they’d revealed she had died, each day of their lives would be a nightmare and they’d never be able to settle in.

Radish April 9, 2012, 12:25 AM EST.

Comment ID #213866

I had an Aunt who did that for her kids, who at the time were four and two (I was about 5 and a half). My mother was to be their godmother, but my Aunt Zadi made out of the surgery, victoriously might I add. I really should give them a call.

Mongo April 9, 2012, 12:26 AM EST.

Comment ID #213867

Radish: I understand, but how much have they had to toughen up over the spam of a day? They have their breaking point. And teaching them young is a good way to break their spirits.

Kikren April 9, 2012, 12:28 AM EST.

Comment ID #213868

Radish: A childs innocence is precious, I think she did the right thing. Now Abbey is older he can probably handle the pain better. At least he had hope to keep him going when he was young. Losing a mother that young would of probably crushed him and caused him to be a different person then he is today

Back to someone who matters, poor Abby’s mom…she’s so nice in wanting her kids to grow up in a good home.

Flyboy April 9, 2012, 1:09 AM EST.

Comment ID #213876

Well, okay, that’s the problem with over-dramatizing anyone’s sad story - you make every individual a tragic hero.

That aside, I’m loving the progression and the back story. The mom does seem more idealistic than I would expect, but it seems to tie into the way Abbey sees her. She’s an angel in his eyes, after all. She’s the one he fought to protect.

Spladle of Doom April 9, 2012, 1:10 AM EST.

Comment ID #213877

I assume it’s this surgery she probably died from. or perhaps not, though I think it may be safe to say at this point she did in fact die.

I can see where she might think this is a good idea. I get the impression that she probably didn’t hold a lot of self worth as a woman or a mother. Also seemed to possibly suffer from guilt due to the whole ordeal and all the things the kids had to suffer through, things they had to witness and were also denied.
And so this was a sort of ‘final gift to you’ sort of thing. It seems like she didn’t think she was going to live and perhaps maybe even hoped for it. Hoped for it so that her kids could be left to continue to grow up with two people that would care for them and give them what she may have seen as her failing to give them, a loving family. Perhaps she even thought they might be able to forget about her. To her this was for the best, and she did do it out of love….

but it was no real gift of mercy. They didn’t forget about her and never stopped loving her. Never gave up hope they would someday see her or at least hear from her somehow.

What she in turn denied them was a sense of closure. They were denied a future with her either way, that cannot be helped. But they could have been granted the chance to grieve, to mourn the loss of their mother and be carried through it by people who did care about them and their well-being. The loss of their mother would NOT have been made easier with age. Being older does NOT lessen the pain of loved one. You simply gain a better understanding of what really happens to them and what death really means and the true gravity of it. That knowledge though does NOT necessarily make the pain easier to deal with or handle.

The not knowing about how someone you love is doing: where they are at, if they are okay, if they are thinking about you, if they still love you if they wanna see you, why they haven’t come to see you, why they aren’t there and all the other why’s….The hurt from that can be far greater and more torturous than the pain of loss.

I’m not hating on Abbey’s mom. I just disagree with her choice. Then again, it could be the choice made from a mind warped by pain, loss, fear, depression and low self worth and perhaps not HER own at all in a sense…

charlotte was a ******* weakling.

there, that pretty much clears it up. :smirk:

really, though… being stupid and weak is what leads to people staying in abusive relationships, and what leads to decisions such as the one she made in the end.

abandoning those you love and only giving them a future filled with pain is hardly a gift. :/

Hey… if she did die during surgery I don’t think it will matter what the nurse does. The hospital would know, and it would show in the patient records. And the death reports would reach the- I’m not sure. The Department of Health maybe. Say it didn’t then I don’t think it was a secret which hospital Abbey’s mother got surgery from. Janet could have just asked the right authorities or the doctor who did the surgery.

If she did survive the surgery then I guess she just chose to disappear. Then somehow died later.

Abbey’s Mom shows her ‘true mom’ by protecting her kids like this.

But now it leaves me with another question… what exactly is the surgery for? I have a bad feeling it was a response to injuries she suffered under her husband’s beatings…

She probably was broken inside so to say because of the blows Abe senior dealt to her. Lamps are weapons, people. Also, I think that the bandages are a good clue as to what needs to be fixed inside of her. If it’s in da head, well poop. It’s gonna be a difficult operation all right… :’(

Furious Abbey I just wish Abbey’s dad would drop dead. In fact, I wish he DID die already. If that jerk really loved her, this wouldn’t have happened! Abbey and Molly wouldn’t have been sent to a foster home, Abbey wouldn’t be living in guilt, and Charlotte wouldn’t have died.

But then again, you kind of have to thank him- in the weirdest way. If his dad hadn’t been like that, Abbey probably would’ve never met Daisy and Paulo and Lucy and Mike and Sue. But then again, Taeshi might’ve decided to have Abbey and his (hopefully) normal family move, and he would’ve been introduced into BCB anyways.

I recently lost my mother. About seven years ago, I lost my mom’s dad (grandpa), and my dad’s mom (grandma) within two months of one another. I lost the most important people of my life. One of them, I lost quickly and more suddenly than expected. With this said, I want to make a point. It takes time to heal. It’s tragic, and it hurts more than anything to lose someone you love, regardless of the life they lived, or how they died.

A piece of you dies with them, but someone else emerges from those ashes as well. People, especially children, are resilient. They should had been told. Yes it would hurt. It would leave a pain that’s unimaginable to the one feeling it, but it takes time to heal. The only thing that’s happening now, is replacing the worry with the sense of real loss. All it did was prolong their suffering and make it that much longer for them to deal with it.

Wondering and worrying will drive you insane, but so will grieving over the death of your mother. If they would had found out earlier, while it would had been hard, they would still be putting that episode of their life behind them. Now it’s going to feel like they’re back to square one. Especially Abbey, who’s torn with grief and rage, who’s more like his father than he cares to admits, but is working to make sure he becomes a man, and not the monster his father was/is. He has a long way to go. And this episode could either make him, or break him, at least for a while, until he decides to pick up the pieces.

Here’s the thing about death though. As much as it hurts, it can release the people you love, especially if you were suffering. But it will always hurt. … Always. I will never stop hurting, and neither will Abbey or his sister. It’s up to them, however, to decide how that pain, is going to help them shape their lives.

I honestly think that she should have informed her children, despite everyone saying, “she didn’t tell them to give them a happy life.” one thing to consider is that Charlotte probably knew she was going to die. It even seems to me she has given up the will to live. So either, she would die. However, that’s when you have to weigh the pro’s and con’s of alerting your children. If they had known, they couldve possibly gotten to say goodbye to her. It would have hurt but it would have given them closure. However, not telling her children anything creates what I like to refer to as “the waiting by the phone” situation. Abbey and Molly waited and waited years for their mother to contact them in anyway, when they could have moved on better and stopped waiting if they had known she had passed. The truth hurts, and I understand how she thought this would protect then, but in the end, I feel like Charlotte should have realized children can grasp and recover an grow from hard expierences. However, Abbey and Molly will have to now learn to get past all the time they spent waiting for her and get over all the ‘what ifs’ they’ll ask themselves. The truth is very important and I think this will make trust a serious issue for both Abbey and Molly.

And then the angels came down from heaven, fixed her up with voodoo magic, and Abbey was spared the torment of having to find out her mother was dead. His father got jailed and Abbey, along with his sister, lived a happy life with their mother. Abbey is now going steady with Daisy and their happiness is so great, that all the other drama going on with their schoolmates doesn’t even phase them. Forever they lived under happy rays of sunshine.

I can see the pain, a severely abused woman just worried about her kids…her son living threw his life an idle witness of transgressions gone by, nearly performing them himself. While the daughter, bless her heart, is pained to bare the knowledge that it happened…wanted what was best for her kids…even if it meant leaving them in the dark about her fate…true motherhood, or selfish act, no true judge for it can be found…but many can make claims. Kudos Tae, love the series so far, found it a week ago and haven’t stopped since!

I’ll probably get banned for this, but it’s worth it:
