Though I don’t think Mike’s doing this for healthy reasons…maybe I’m projecting my own flaws onto him but this seems more like withdrawing from self-hatred rather than “I am choosing not to engage because it has consistently proven to lead to unhealthy outcomes for both of us”. Like I bet his mindset is more “I am so bad of a person that I will just hurt you again,” or something

seriously. what. the hell. did you think. was going to happen? you’ve convinced him he’s an irredeemable monster incapable of being loved and you think he’s just going to fucking talk to you? did you believe you were this willing to just hear him out this soon after December? because you weren’t, you hid behind a snowman and had your hedgehog chase him away
what were you going to do? apologise for justifying years of abuse over the idea you could never just say you didn’t believe he was actually in love with you? just beg for comfort? why would he accept any of that?

Saying this in a separate comment because I think it’s important: I don’t think he’s avoiding her because he’s making a healthy choice - I think it’s shame that’s behind this. He hates himself and thinks he’s just going to hurt her again. I don’t think it’s a sign of growth for him, it’s just another way to show he’s spiraling. Maybe I’m reading too much into this

@kiall I wouldn’t go that far as to say he’s been gaslit…that implies that it was someone else who made him believe that. I think Mike already hated himself, even before Augustus’s actions in Line in the Sand. I wrote out a whole thing in a reply elaborating, but I think it got hidden because I used a curse word 😅. TLDR is I think Mike is in a prison 70-80% of his own making, driven by guilt of what he said in December EDIT: oh this one sent, I’ll say it again. Ok so basically the way guilt has worked in my experience is that if you have one thing that you’re mega-guilty about (like, say, Mike feeling guilty over Lucy’s suicide attempt), that guilt festers. And then it starts taking other mistakes you’ve made (and we know Mike has made a lot of them) and adding them to the pile of “reasons why you are irredeemably horrible.”

I’m wondering if this will potentially result in him fainting from exhaustion and Lucy of all people is the one to save him by calling for an ambulance/alerting others about his condition.
I can see some readers being upset that Lucy is the one who saves him, but hopefully that development could at least lead to them finally burying the hatchet rather than spending the rest of their lives caught in a vicious cycle.

Yeah at this point sometimes needs to change for the better, as bad as that a medical emergency was needed to bring these two together to talk.
I do hope their talk brings about something better between the two of them.

Yeah, you can’t just go running to Mr. Always-The-Bad-Guy after publicly making him out to be Mr. Always-The-Bad-Guy. Even if Mike wanted to, even if Lucy asked him to, interacting with Lucy in any way at this point has a very real chance of coming back to bite him. But even so, Lucy could really use some support, yet she can’t seem to go to anyone else right now… What a weird place we’re in.

I really hope these two can have a proper talk together this chapter. No yelling, pointing fingers, or blaming the other. Just a normal conversation. And with how exhausted these two are, maybe that will actually happen.

Lucy this is what Mike did that night at the tree when he was falling apart and needed someone and ended up approaching the one person he had no business leaning on anymore and you know it!! This sucks! At the very least you have to try to do what he couldn’t and let the other person go when they try to do the objectively correct thing and walk away!! Got a strong feeling that’s not happening but man I know it’s not easy after so many years but you two both Need to find a way to mentally delete each other from the Emergency Contact list.

Sadly, this is what I predicted would happen.
Mike is giving her EXACTLY what she wanted when Augustus and her confronted him. Mike is leaving her alone, and at the price of Mike losing his only remaining allies.
It’s a sad truth, it’s a sad situation, but this has become the ‘Ask and you shall Receive.’ You asked for Mike to leave you alone, then you did so in front of people he hoped would still be his own anchor, and now he is truly alone.

He still hears sandy, Augustus and David, the three people who brought these two kids to their lowest points, Mike feels he has no one who can support him at his worst, and Lucy feels that no one cares about her they just want her for their own benefit.
these two broken kids pulled together even though so much tries to pull them apart.
